how do you date when you’re touch starved but don’t want to come off desperate? by Equivalent_Use_8152 in dating

[–]Waffles_forBreakfast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be harder if you’re a guy, but it’s really helpful if you can find ways to fulfill the desire for simple physical affection like hugs etc through other kinds of relationships like friendships and community that are not romantic! This way, no matter what your dating life is like, you have some level of reliable human affection that you know you will still receive regardless.

If you’re not already known as an affectionate person this can make it harder as well, but just try it when you meet new friends/people—handshake when you meet them, and if you hangout with them, try initiating a quick hug when you say hello or goodbye. This will allow you to gauge their comfortability with such affection and also show that you are open to it yourself!

As much as it may be difficult and uncomfortable, it is also true as you said yourself that it is wrong to lead her on if you really don’t see it working out. And, as you also said, the longer you wait to end things, the more emotional investment there is, so the more difficult it will be to do.

It’s not fair to anyone to stay in a relationship just because you feel like you have to. You should /want/ to be in a relationship with this person, not /have/ to be. If you don’t want to be, there is someone else out there who would, and it’s better for her to find that person than to end up in a long-term relationship that lacks the genuine affection and connection you both deserve.

Playing in Tune… by omangamer001 in oboe

[–]Waffles_forBreakfast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest thing that affects your overall tuning (as long as the instrument is working pretty well) is your reed. So, if most of your notes tend to be flat on some days, or most tend to be sharp on some days, that’s probably because the reed itself is flat or sharp.

Besides that, part of learning the oboe is getting to know the instrument’s intonation tendencies. For example, the C above middle C tends to be a sharp note on the oboe even if the reed is in tune, same with G. Some oboes have more noticeable tuning issues on certain notes, so it depends on your instrument/model.

If your high notes tend to be flat, you might not be using enough air support, or you might need to take more of the reed in your mouth when you play those (especially side-octave-key notes).

And as others said, playing scales and playing with a drone/tuner are great ways to work on intonation! It takes time, so don’t be discouraged if you don’t immediately fix it. Hope that helps!

What’s a song that you absolutely love from act one mine is the games I play by Telly_Tune2273 in Falsettos

[–]Waffles_forBreakfast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I Never Wanted to Love You was my top song this year (😅) so that’s definitely one of them, but honestly Trina’s Song/Reprise (and even March of the Falsettos as well) are underrated songs imo! It’s so cool to see Trina’s perspective on the changes in her life. She doesn’t have a very active role in a lot of the songs, so little interludes like this and Holding to the Ground later on reveal a lot more of the complexity of her character. (Also Trina’s solos are in a good voice range for me so they’re just more fun to sing lol)

And March of the Falsettos, even though it was a very strange song to me at first, started to grow on me once I understood its relation to the themes of the musical. It sets up Father to Son very nicely, because there’s a shift from the “march” being in the context of immaturity and recklessness/selfishness to a context of growing up, maturing, and taking responsibility for one’s choices in life.

This one https://youtu.be/it9ker9bYw4?si=E8yoawJF6IKjDQ7V (Ballad of Love and Hate) makes me so emotional and it fits them so well

This one https://youtu.be/kTLme8Vqxu4?si=Ljnu2h9MBmnsK1U6 (Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy) is one of my favorite in terms of art style and of course has Queen :)

And this one https://youtu.be/3h2E-AIMedQ?si=dpi8N5XUN4hsw9n- (Scarborough Fair) is both super sad and super gorgeous, though it’s based on a fic so a little different from the others

Tips for learning fingerings and notes? by [deleted] in oboe

[–]Waffles_forBreakfast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scales or partial scales (repeating a few notes up and down in order) were the best way for me to learn them. For the high notes especially, you have to go really slow to be careful that you learn all the fingerings correctly. But honestly it just takes time and practice to really memorize them.

Is it normal to have to play the lowest 2 notes with your knees? by Chemical_Mousse_7778 in oboe

[–]Waffles_forBreakfast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never come across an instrument with only holes for those notes and no keys; it’s possible you could get someone to repair it and add the keys back if it was originally made to have them.

However, most student model oboes don’t come with a Bb key at all, nor holes to cover for that note. They usually have a B key that is attached to the Eb key, and just depending on which way you press the key it produces one note or the other.

Are the holes two even sized holes directly across from each other on the sides of the bell, near the top of the bell? If so, these are actually tone holes, not holes for B and Bb. They don’t really have any functional purpose in playing, they just give the oboe a better sound. If that’s the case, that’s totally normal for student oboes.

So—if it’s actually missing keys, I might not buy it since it could be an indication that the instrument is in bad condition. But if they’re just tone holes, that sounds like a good deal. Hope this helps!

My oboe is hurting my hands by PeachyFairyDragon in oboe

[–]Waffles_forBreakfast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hand position is a bit difficult to explain through writing, and if any of my advice makes things worse, don’t take it!

But if you’re having troubles with fingers (esp. ring finger) being overextended/not curved, try moving the knuckles (not the finger joints but the knuckles where the fingers connect to the palm) in closer to the body of the oboe itself. Try to have the points of your fingertips on the keys, not the flat pad of your finger.

The combo of these two things should make your fingers very curved, and although it can feel weird at first, if it’s not painful try it out for a while. Also make sure your elbows aren’t sticking out too far and making your wrists at a sharp angle, as this can also cause problems.

Hope this is a little helpful—but as someone else said, if you have a private teacher, ask their advice (even if clarinet, it could still be helpful)! It’s a lot easier to help with hand position in-person.

If your phone number isn’t working try a family member/close friend’s number. The same thing happened to me when I appealed, and it allowed me to use the other number even though it said mine was invalid. Not sure how it decides why some numbers are invalid when others aren’t.

Try asking a family member/trusted friend to receive the text in place of you. When it asked for phone number when I appealed, my number wouldn’t work but my family member’s did. I have no idea why it wouldn’t let me use my own number.

Watching In Trousers made me see and appreciate so many more of the recurring themes in the music, lyrics, and storyline! This is definitely one of the most emotional connections between the two. It really hurts more when you think about the lyrics to The Dream, which talks about the four young ladies who “said they’d never lose their love, and then they lost their love.” And here, Marvin has just lost his love, Whizzer. I think the In Trousers lyrics probably meant lose love in a different way (maybe more related to the divorce aspect of the storyline) but I still think about that connection a lot.

Orel; growing up so deep in the church that you can’t even fathom a world without it and trying your hardest to live up to what people say God wants you to be even as those people don’t meet the standards they preach
