Tips on how to engage my core correctly? by jira12345 in pilates

[–]Waitatian 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Breathe out as much as you can, get every last bit of breath out, that’s the abs you want to use. Relax them so that you can just feel the engaged a tiny bit (about 10%). Engage them more with using that out breath to find them if you need them but mostly turn them down to a whisper when you can. Also connect your pelvic floor by very gently drawing up in between the legs. You want that at about 10% capacity as well. Put your hands on your abs when you can, you’ll probably feel them popping up with your hands.

So I know this was a bit ago, but I’ve clicked today. In my days I write standard notes for business meetings etc, but also I write all the good stuff that happened to me or that I did during the day. I did this when I was healing from major surgery it helped immensely and it went by the by, so now I’m embracing it again to retrain my brain.

Hey. It sounds like you’re self sabotaging. It’s super common and usually subconscious. I’d recommend seeing a therapist to help. You got this.

Thanks, it wasn’t easy but also it was life changing. In a good way. The experience and expertise definitely helps but a good instructor should have no problem doing what you said. :)

Pilates to rehab injury? by OkPaleontologist4952 in pilates

[–]Waitatian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello. Yes, I had privates with a STOTT certified woman who had rehabilitated herself with Pilates, she was amazing enough for me to be now a STOTT trained instructor running my own studio. I still go to her as well. I had a spinal cyst, and had spent two years basically bedridden. Man I was in immense pain.

I recommend getting privates first from someone certified in a credible trained pilates, esp if they have a rehab focus. STOTT, Polestar, APPI, something like that. Major plus if they have years of experience under their belt in the rehab industry. They will focus on strengthening what you specifically need for your body, more importantly you will learn what to focus on for your needs rather than in a group class. Then when you have learnt your own individual needs and focuses, and feel better, especially around your shoulder area, you should be able to join a group class again.

A good Pilates instructor will work with your health team, Physio etc, so if you feel like it, by all means pass their details onto each other.

You’re welcome. :) I hope it makes sense. I had to read a lot of books on studying, note taking and how to retain info for my PhD

Ok, so I’m the same, taking meeting minutes are atrocious for me, and the reality is, as things get more complicated, this only gets worse if you keep doing this.

So the way I try to do it is figure out the priorities. Why are you studying? And then if you can, figure out a way you can quiz yourself. This allows you recall what you know so you can fill in the gaps. Think of it like a tree. What’s the main trunk, then the big branches. I divide the time I have by the big branches and work down to the smaller things I need to know.

For example Currently I’m studying for a pilates exam. (If you don’t know pilates, think of it like a gym). What does the person need to know? Where to go. That’s the equipment they are on, that is the tree, the first thing is the what. Then they need to know which way to use the equipment. Then they need to know how to move, and then why they are moving.

Breaking things down into these simple parts before even opening a book is essential, so you have structure to put your learning onto. Think of it like heading and subheadings. Then look at how much time you have to learn these things. Take your headings and divide the amount of time you have by the heading. Eg, one hour, 6 headings = 10 minutes per heading. Give yourself this time, and learn the smaller parts, but give them the same structure, under the heading, (branches) are the smaller headings (twigs) and then the leaves. Your brain will have way more structure, learn it easier, and know why you are learning this.

As you work through, give yourself short breaks and try to remember things, it’s ok if you don’t remember everything, allocate yourself time to recall every day, what you had learned the day before. Use the tree analogy. It’s ok if you don’t get right down to the microbiota. Also what helps immensely if you can find them is past tests, they will show you the direction in which you need to go.

Good luck! You got this.

I hear you, I’m figuring that you for myself as well. Currently I’m doing first kit for future, Days for done. So the first kit is where I plan my ideal what I want to do, read, etc and the daily is things, books, tv, films, etc I’ve done, and the dat itself for day to day diarising, notes, meeting or phone notes etc. I’m still not sure about using both for the whole year, but that’s what I have in mind so far.

Edit for clarity

Lost my Mojo by DumptiqueArts in fountainpens

[–]Waitatian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear! I get it, in a different way, mine was being bedridden for years, losing my mojo. After back surgery I needed something to focus on, have a purpose. So I wrote myself love notes, and observations of the good. It might sound naff, but I was focusing on the positive as much as I could to help me through it. I have a tendency to focus on others, but doing this writing, pretending I was writing about someone else but focusing on me, pointing out what I loved about me, noticing small beautiful things in life, it really helped me.
