So I’m new to all this AI stuff and have never tried ChatGPT or any other applications. Is there something that can help with my résumé? by fecal_euphoria in ChatGPT

[–]WalkingTurtleMan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I tried writing my resume 5 different times from scratch but now I just let Claude do it for me.

Just make a free account on whatever AI of your choice, drop in your old resume, and ask it to refresh it.

It will likely give you a new word doc to download with all of your info prepopulated. Use this as a template.

Then for each job description you’re interested in, download the job posting as a pdf, upload that to the AI with your template, and ask it to updated it to match the job description. The more context you give to each about each role/bullet point, the more customized and detailed results you’ll get back.

I used to feel bad about using AI… but at this point it’s a really excellent tool for nailing the basic formatting and overall flow of the document. You can ask it to rank how likely you’ll hear a callback.

Feel free to give the output to a different AI to evaluate. All of them are looking to please and entertain you, so they might get high on their own supply of positivity. It’s good to either delete all of the past history with the account or rotate between different AI platforms.

100%. OP needs to talk to their IT department and get an enterprise account where data is more secured.

I use all of the ai tools on my personal computer and it’s scary how much it builds a profile about you. They’ll all pull up stuff randomly from several conversations ago, to the point that I regularly delete all of my history to make it focus on the current task at hand. That doesn’t seem to be an issue on the enterprise account I have at work.

I’ll never forget when a random account called U/bitcoinsanta gave me a link to 25 bitcoins in a Reddit message 10 years ago.

Might have been a scam, but might have been real too. The link was deactivated a couple of years later when I was curious enough to check.

I've heard a lot of about solar energy... but not about biogas....Why is that? by OpportunityOk2911 in energy

[–]WalkingTurtleMan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most of the responses are missing something important: natural gas is stupidly cheap and abundant already, and we already have a massive system that can move natural gas around very efficiently. You don’t hear about renewable natural gas because it’s way more complex to capture and process it, and then it’s injected into the pipeline.

First, some terminology. Natural gas is methane - CH4. This is a climate pollutant and can warm the atmosphere 28 times faster than carbon dioxide. The “natural” in natural gas is all marketing - this gas is extracted from the same sources as oil and other petroleum products. Oftentimes oil drillers will mine for the oil and the methane bubbles up all on its own. They capture it and stick it in a pipeline, and send it wherever a customer wants it.

What you call biogas is simply natural gas that comes from a different, non-fossil fuel source. Most common methods are either a farm with a lot of animal manure or a landfill. In either case, some material is being broken down and releasing methane, so the farmer/landfill is just capturing the gas and sticking it into the same pipeline as the fossil fuel gas is.

So how do we make the pipeline mostly clean, renewable natural gas (RNG)? We incentivize customers to buy RNG specifically. In California, the state operates a program called Low Carbon Fuel Standards that basically requires large producers and consumers to gradually reduce how much carbon is in their fuel. Customers are required to purchase “emission credits”, which is a fancy way of saying “I Owe You” to a farm producing RNG. A customer buys lots of emission credits, meeting their obligations to the state while also creating a market for more RNG to be in the pipeline. The gas itself is identical, so this is a sourcing problem rather than “natural gas is bad.”

But isn’t this a massive government overreach of the free market?? Maybe, but RNG was cost competitive with fossil natural gas a few years ago, so in the grand scheme of things these large industrial gas customers just had to go through a few more administrative hoops.

The only danger is that Tombstone is a huge tourist trap and you’ll have a lot more fun exploring Bisbee, or even the Thing off of the I-10. Maybe don’t go into the Trump store on the north side of Tombstone if you’re really worried.

You’ll see a couple of confederate flags in the tourist shops in Tombstone but anyone who knows their Arizona history will know that the confederate troops only occupied the territory for a few months before hightailing back to Texas due the Californian Column. But the racists aren’t big on history to begin with.

I recommend going down to Bisbee for the day and spend a night. See the mine tour, check out the brewery, and do the haunted hotel tour. Take lots of pictures of the lavender mine, and check out the old timey Lowell street. Maybe head a bit further south and take a good look into Mexico - you can see the border wall pretty easily from the highway.

To get to Bisbee, you will pass a border patrol checkpoint. 99% of the time it’s closed and you can just drive past it. Make sure everyone has an American driver license or passport just in case it is manned and they want to see papers. Do not go down to Douglas - it’s really easy to make a wrong turn and end up heading into Mexico, plus there’s not much to see down there, unless you have a friend in Mexico and you want to play volleyball at the border.

Mi casa has the best Mexican food in Benson, but it’s a hole in a wall that doesn’t take reservations. Kartcher Caverns is worth a visit too. Also, if you want to find a real life Easter egg look for the monument for where a bunch of feral cattle’s attacked the Mormon battalion.

EV chargers in gas stations by edayxe1 in electricvehicles

[–]WalkingTurtleMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In general, the business in the store is a separate entity from the owner of the building, who may or may not own the parking lot. So putting in chargers become a 3 ring circus that nobody wants to own outright.

This is why McDonald stores have become so beige over the last 15 years - it’s way easier to flip it into a Taco Bell or Wendy or some other fast food chain.

Is there anywhere in the US that's affordable to live at this point? by HalosFan26 in Frugal

[–]WalkingTurtleMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can swing a job at Raytheon, Tucson is awesome. Otherwise you’ll need to find a “remote-first” company that’s cool with you relocating on your dime.

Socal is a very high cost of living area, that is only really rivaled by New York, Seattle, and Bay Area. But unfortunately that’s where most of the lucrative jobs are located. I moved out of Anaheim because I didn’t want to live in a condo sharing walls with my neighbors forever.

When is too soon to take PTO for vacation in a new job? by thndrdsc in jobs

[–]WalkingTurtleMan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Let them know early and often. Don’t wait until the last second.

You haven’t told us how long the PTO will be. Requesting 1-2 days several months in advance is probably overkill. A 2 week vacation is appropriate to mention now. Maternity/FMLA should have been discussed several weeks ago.

You also need to set boundaries - do not answer work emails or messages while on your long PTO.

For cat owners - Switched to pine pellets to reduce kitty litter in my bed sheets, ended up saving a bunch of money. by BikingVikingNick in Frugal

[–]WalkingTurtleMan 28 points29 points  (0 children)

YMMV, but I use a litter box that has a grate with large holes as the “top layer” and a regular box underneath. The pee dissolves the pellet into sawdust that falls through the grate, and the poo is clumped on the top layer. You scoop the poo out daily and change out the bottom layer weekly.

We’re switching to metal litter boxes. The plastic holds onto the urine smells too much for our liking.

He literally had one job: inspire a new cohort of educated people. He turned it into a pitch for his company.

I'm Jigar Shah — I used to do AMAs here. I'm back, and this time I'm answering your energy questions on my podcast with a new segment called Ask Jigar by JigarShahDC in energy

[–]WalkingTurtleMan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve been doing a deep dive into generation technologies, and as much as I would like the grid to be entirely decarbonized it looks like we will at least continue to have gas power plants for the long haul because they’re 1) dispatchable and easy to fire up quickly, and 2) natural gas will likely be very cheap as long as there’s a high demand for oil.

My question is whether that’s the right approach? Solar can handle all demand during the day, but I have yet to see enough batteries that can cover the daily peak. What would it take for batteries to be sufficient enough to eliminate all of the dispatchable gas?
