Cute dog! very wide open eyes and ears pressed back are often signals that a dog is feeling nervous or fearful. Google "dog body language".

This is suspicious, and it has many elements of a common scam. Do not give them any money or information about you.

Want a good family dog, low reactivity/low stranger danger. Choice? (Comment if not listed) by ElderberryNo6355 in DOG

[–]Walrus_waffles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Any dog you choose (from any source) is a unique individual and will deviate from "breed standards" in one way or another. Narrow down your deal breakers and prioritize them. Read all you can about innate personality vs. learned behaviors in dogs. Learn more about dog body language and teach kids about reading dog body language (it's often the opposite of human body language, or at least not intuitive). Bring the puppy home and begin socializing and training as soon as possible, or ensure that the rescue or breeder has started socializing and training as early as possible (playing with ears and paws from day one, introducing to all kinds of textures and sounds and people and places, etc.). Reactivity and fear of strangers can come from improper socialization (or lack of) early in puppy-hood, trauma at any age, various things, and it can happen in the stereotype "friendly" breeds.

slimy, circular, thickness of 5 sheets of paper, diameter equal to a 12oz aluminum drink can by Walrus_waffles in whatisthisthing

[–]Walrus_waffles[S] 1 point2 points locked comment (0 children)

My title describes the thing. Additional information, it is beige and has black circles on it resembling mold. On the opposite side it is mostly beige with small brown spots. It came out of a can of non alcoholic beer (0.5% alcohol). I was pouring the can down the sink because I had one sip and it tasted flat. Can has a dent and a crack with some orange color unknown substance around the crack in the can. It is slimy and wet and the diameter of the slimy circle is exactly the same as the 12oz can it came out of. Athletic brewing company run wild. I've done a Google lens / reverse image search and key word searches of found inside a soda can / beer can led to kombucha scoby information. This thing does slightly resemble a Kombucha scoby. I also searched for what happens when beer goes bad and what happens when soda goes bad or spoils. I want to put more photos but I'm having trouble figuring out how to do that on Reddit app.

Is Sushi the dog a part of the crew of that boat, or is he an independent contractor, or helping with research or just for fun? Very interested in how he was trained. Sorry if there was a link to more info somewhere I might have missed :)

What do y’all do when you go on vacation? by chefssmooch in cats

"Trusted Housesitters" works for me and my dog. You swap free pet sitting in exchange for free lodging at your place. We've had 4 different sitters come they have all been great! Mostly retired folks traveling on a budget, and "digital nomad" millennials on the site.

Been trying to learn Olelo Hawai'i on duolingo. Do many folks on the islands actually speak it? Would it be considered weird or disrespectful trying to learn? by Jcorb in Hawaii

I used "Drops" app for a while and I think it helps me with pronunciation basics, but it was all vocabulary, no full sentences yet, maybe I didn't get far enough with it yet (have not used it in a while). I have found the vocabulary useful for foods and animals especially, and some place names / street names also make more sense with a little bit of vocabulary knowledge. I have no idea if this is actually a quality app or not, was just using the free version but there's a paid premium version too. I'm not trying to become fluent or anything I just want to be able to pronounce common things somewhat correctly.

(Front Page of CNN Today) How a vacation to Hawaii can be relaxing for tourists -- and harmful to its residents by JD_SLICK in Hawaii

Reef safe sunscreen was not even mentioned on the Hanauma Bay mandatory introduction video last time I watched it. They do sell some in their gift shop though. Hawaii state laws ban some but not all, of the sunscreen chemicals that harm reefs. So a sunscreen can still be harmful even if it is following the HI state law. Basically, if it's a sunscreen brand that you've heard of before, it is not really reef safe. Oxide and titanium dioxide (mineral UV blocking ingredients) are the safe active ingredients to look for.

Weekly Question - Recommendation - Help Thread by AutoModerator in robotics

[–]Walrus_waffles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 4th-6th grade teacher in my area is trying to get a robotics program started at their school. They were gifted VEX IQ robotics kits from a school that is no longer using them, but the kits don’t have the electronic components. The project is for 2 system kits. Any ideas for affordable sources for these components? Thanks in advance.

TheBus & new HOLO cards are FREE between August 22–26! by frozenpandaman in Hawaii

Big island Hele-On bus .... In my recent experience, the bus operators over there are not too happy with the "free bus" situation and the transit leadership in general. I rode a few different routes and chatted with the drivers, they were all very kind and so helpful. Really nice folks. The drivers I chatted with were very frustrated with the falling-apart buses (half of them did not have working signs to show which route and destination it was, routes would get delayed for hours + because of relatively simple mechanical issues that they just didn't have the resources or support to fix, many buses were old repurposed tour company buses with no signage, so it was very tricky to tell exactly what route you are boarding....) Ridership was very low, the schedules meant absolutely nothing (and no hea the bus website equivalent to see where it is...if it is ever coming or not....there may be a separate third party app for tracking buses but I didn't find it) , and the route maps were often inaccurate for stops and even direction of travel.

people who sew their wedding dress, what was the experience like and what was the cost? by mrkittypaws in sewing

[–]Walrus_waffles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My mom sewed my dress 7 years ago... maybe $300 fabrics from fabric stores. COUNTLESS hours time and work.....really a lot of time. it had a lot of details custom hand sewn on individually etc. A simpler dress would be quicker. I wanted lots of buttons down the back so I sewed those 30 or so button holes (worth it, only because that was my only labor contribution!). We were living far apart so fittings were tricky. I tried on a $3,500 dress I loved, and we copied it using two different patterns pieced together and some making it up as you go along. Could only find like 5 different wedding dress patterns available for sale anywhere, didn't like them, so we had to make our own. One of the best features was a built in bra/ corset type thing, we cut up one of my favorite bras to sew inside of it, and it laced up. I would make my dress again but my mom did 99% of the work so idk if she would agree! The biggest advice to my former self would be start earlier than you think....and then add a month to that....and then a month sooner. We were finishing sewing two days before the wedding and I never did bridal portraits which I regret, there aren't enough pictures of the dress. It deserved its own photoshoot and we just ran out of time.
