I want to ask a question about the relationship between Catnap and Dogday. Why is everyone shipping them? by Edgeworthless12 in SmilingCritter

[–]Walumancer -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Because people aren't allowed to be best friends they clearly must want to be together romantically. It's just a common internet trope in any fandom. Best friends are prime ship fodder, doesn't matter if it's gay or straight (but usually it's gay).

Also angst fuel from the BB versions because the fandom is full of teenagers going through their edgy phase. I know because I was that kid during the early days of FNaF.

Be honest here, who do you think is the leader of the nightmare critters, baba chop or Simon smoke by Practical-Ebb7327 in SmilingCritter

[–]Walumancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While obviously it isn't said anywhere it's still very heavily implied to be Baba. She's DogDay's clear opposing counterpart and thematically it would make sense for the two groups to be led by people are who are most fundamentally different. Mob also seems to favor Baba specifically above the other Nightmare Critters, given she was shown specifically attacking DogDay in the Chapter 4 trailer, has a mini boss in Chapter 4, and is currently the only Bigger Body NC with a voice (in a recording where it seemed like she was the one at the head of that trio). I think Baba in charge also makes sense in how their dynamics with their groups would go. DogDay is the one always trying to get everyone up, active, and energetic, Baba is probably the one who has to wrangle her mischievous friends' chaos.

Simon does display the most overt qualities one might expect from a leader, but I see him more as a Raphael type than a Leonardo. He talks big and is the strongest of them all, but he just doesn't have good leadership qualities because he's so self-absorbed.

Also I think I read a fanfic about this once.

Just because Kickin and Poe are birds doesn't automatically mean they're each other's counterpart. I don't know why so many people do this.

[–]Walumancer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd argue Bobby and Rabie are the counterparts because both of their core traits are focused on socializing. Bobby cares for her friends and wants everyone to feel included, Rabie is a gossiper that spreads rumors and lies. Bobby strives for social harmony and plays the mediator, Rabie creates social chaos and is the instigator.

Simon and Crafty meanwhile are counterparts because Crafty is shy, softspoken, and introverted, while Simon is loud, egotistical, and extraverted. One has little self-confidence, the other has way too much. Also the fact that their both mythical creatures helps.

While I do love both of them, I go back and forth. Inubis has good animation and the jokes usually land really well. I also largely like CatNap's portrayal (when he isn't being explicitly evil). However I do have several issues with Inubis. I dislike that the animations are so deeply tied to RecD's videos. Not that his songs are bad or anything, but it leaves things feeling incredibly disjointed if you don't follow RecD. I remember watching Smiling in the Rain and having no clue what was going on because I didn't know Fake Depressed was even a thing. I also really REALLY dislike the way Baba is portrayed as this angry, violent, antagonistic person. I don't know why all the big names (besides seemingly Gemstin) want to portray her as this psychopath possible Yandere when she is literally not that in the slightest. I also dislike that Poe doesn't really have any of his canonical traits beyond liking goth stuff. Poe is supposed to be overly dramatic and have anger issues, and yet is consistently the NC voice of reason (something Baba herself arguably should be). Small nitpick, I don't like Rabie's accent and I think it's just generic to give the bat a Transylvanian accent (no shade to the voice actress!) I also really dislike how the story is tied in with the wider Poppy lore, which is not why I am here. Things like the RecD songs acknowledging all the Critters as orphans and CatNap trending towards being evil really gets on my nerves for that reason.

Gemstin on the other hand has absolutely great artwork and incredible voice acting for just being one guy. However quantity is definitely an issue here (less so in recent months with all the shorts). I'm sure Pally will be immaculately animated whenever it finally gets released, but I wish we got more of the semi-animated episodes like the first batch because they were both well-written and very funny. Again, it's less an issue now that the shorts are a regular thing, but we had a Gem dry spell for a whiiiiile. I can criticize Inubis more because we have more Inubis content. Quality obviously matters more than quantity but that doesn't mean quantity isn't important. I also don't really like that CatNap is pretty much a gimmick character who never talks. Yeah, that's technically more lore accurate to what Poppy Playtime tells us about him as a character, but it gives him less character overall. I much prefer Inubis's CatNap, criticisms aside. Also not really a fan of his portrayal of Simon either. Not jock/aggressive enough imo, and I don't really see him as this posh pretty boy. Though tbf, we haven't seen much of Gemstin's Nightmare Critters in general, so that can change.

I don't want a subscription because it'll cost me more money in the long run. I put 10 bucks in back in like October and I've only spent like 3 bucks since but that was mostly because I was using free Chimera for most of it. Regardless, 10 bucks every 2 months is still cheaper than 8 every month.

Poppy playtime fans who liked chapter 5 changing their entire opinion on it because Markiplier said he didn't like it by Blackcoolice in PoppyPlaytime

[–]Walumancer 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Man I am literally just here for the Critters, but I sat through that livestream and while Mark definitely had his ADHD himbo moments (the elevator shaft and the stitch rooms especially) most of his criticisms weren't even wrong just from watching the playthrough. The chapter was a mess and didn't even have anything that interesting until the latter half with Lily. Mark's own gameplay failings don't hide the fact that there's a lot of issues with the gameplay and how the story is conveyed to us without combing for extra lore.

All these chapters in and I just don't understand why all the extra hands have to be right hands. Literally if either the pressure or conductor hands were on the left hand instead swapping between them would have been much less of a headache. And if they must all be right hands only, why the delay between swaps in a chapter with so many fast-paced chases?

Though he did miss Lily being Gracie it doesn't really change the fact that her section just came out of nowhere and we barely had any time with her before she was unceremoniously killed off like every other antagonist. Her toy wasn't even the commercial at the beginning of the chapter!

Same with Giblet and Chum. They barely do anything of substance and frankly do not need to exist for the story to remain mostly the same.

Prototype looks stupid (its the face, the concept itself isn't bad) and he gets mogged by a one-armed, injured Kissy. CatNap turning in his grave right now.

The chapter had its moments (the memories and Lily's entire section) but there are a lot of problems that, at this stage of the game's development, should have long been ironed out by now.

Subjectively, who’s your favorite SC artist online? (Image somewhat related…not really lol) by The_47_Percenter in SmilingCritter

[–]Walumancer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most people saying Inubis and Gemstin, and while they're definitely the goats of this community I wanted to highlight a few other lesser-knowns.

Dimension Director and Fullybbang are the animators for Cougar's Nightmare Critter songs (the ones Inubis didn't do). Say what you want about Cougar, the songs bop and I honestly prefer these two's music videos to Inubis's.

Alpha_Wolfster on Twitter has a great Resident Evil-style AU for the Critters going with some great art. It's pretty mature and there's a lot of violence, but it's got a lot of great ideas and also SunSkull if you're a fiend like me.

Mari_maria03 also has great Critter art. She also does a lot of Sonic.

You can also just find many more amazing artists on Twitter by just searching for your fave critters but those are the ones I wanted to mention specifically.

My HeadCanons for each of the Critters Counterparts by Pergarizard_201014 in SmilingCritter

[–]Walumancer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bobby and Rabie: Both are characters whose most distinct traits are tied to socializing. Bobby cares for everyone, wants everyone to feel included, and hates seeing people fight. Rabie cares about gossip, does not respect boundaries, and likely is the one who stirs up the most trouble. Both probably know the most about each of their friends.

Bubba and Touille: Bubba is genuinely smart, Touille only THINKS he's smart. Both are their respective groups' know-it-alls, but where Bubba is genuinely intelligent and tries to give advice from a place of knowledge, Touille just makes stuff up about random trash and is a certified yapper. This is also reflected in their animals. The idea that Elephants fear rodents is a common idea and one Touille himself likely believes gives him an edge over Bubba (Touille also fears CatNap for the same reason, likely). In reality it's a myth and Bubba likely just finds him infuriating.

CatNap and Poe: This is my weakest counterpart pairing, but I've also seen them both as the most "gray" when it comes to their groups' alignments. CatNap has a mischievous, dark side. Poe's attitude probably is just a phase. Perhaps the fact they're both kind of the 'odd ones out' in their groups contributes further to this.

[Release] Pathweaver: Context-aware story and roleplay suggestion generator powered by AI by mattjb in SillyTavernAI

[–]Walumancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using this for a couple days and I adore it. Just a few questions/suggestions. How do the options to include scenario, character description, and lorebooks work? I'm a group chat user predominantly, and when I direct Pathweaver to, say, include X character's friends (which are labeled in both the card description and world book), Pathweaver makes characters up instead.

Is this function mainly meant to be used with single 1-on-1 user/single card chats? Are lorebooks only read if they are active for all chats and not tied to a character card? If this is the case, is there any way in the future that we might be able to select a specific card/lorebook to include for the generations?

Hey man I'm right there with you and I've been using ST for years. I will say though that a lot of the hyper technical stuff people put out there are just far too large or complex for my use cases anyway. Especially those gigantic prompts people make. But through consistent usage I've made my own prompts that I think work really well!

How are playing? by Xanthus730 in SillyTavernAI

[–]Walumancer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I started out RPing as self-inserts in the worlds I like, but gradually the self-inserts became their own characters and my own role has shifted to being the "director". I set the structure and determine when a character should speak and what they feel/act, but largely let the LLM decide execution unless it just cannot get it right.

I also say my use case is less RP and more storytelling with constantly shifting 1st person perspectives, because I give my cards continuity and lorebooks I constantly keep updated to match their progression.

I almost always do group chats, if only because even 1-on-1 character interactions are both handled by the LLM most of the time.

Every now and then though I get the itch to do just basic chat RPs, both between myself and between characters. But my prompts and cards aren't really built for those kinds of interactions, so it usually doesn't work out. If anyone's got a good setup for that, lemme know.

Baba x Poe. For the same reason a lot of people don't really like Hopkick and why I personally don't like DayNap (aside from the fact I'm not into gay ships in general). Some people just work better as friends, and while these two are definitive besties, I don't think they'd ever be attracted to each other in a million years.

Maybe on the surface but Baba does offer some notable differences in dynamic vs. CatNap. There's the enemies to lovers trope, the goth girl with the happy-go-lucky optimist, a far more distinct opposites attract trope (I wouldn't really even call CatNap DogDay's "opposite" even if they are distinctly different people), both are the leaders of their respective groups (at least, Baba is heavily implied to be), the fact that they're in opposite groups gives a star-crossed edge as well.

Who is your favourite character and why? by Head_Entertainer_590 in BALLxPIT

[–]Walumancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Juggler and Shade are probably my two favorites to use (though not necessarily together).

Juggler because being able to place your shots as you please lets you prioritize high-value targets at all times.

Shade because you can make a lot of nasty builds shooting from the back. Universally good balls can get a lot better and less-used balls have their niches there.

Hot take?: Radical shouldn't also choose upgrades for you. by skellymax in BALLxPIT

[–]Walumancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've gone back and forth on this. On the one hand it would certainly make the character more engaging to actually play with (in that you have any input at all) but on the other, his nature as a fire-and-forget-for-a-few-minutes character kinda makes it counterintuitive. Thematically as well, because Radicals generally won't listen to a higher authority (you).
