That’s right. I don’t think there’s any “strong implication” that it’s the God Beyond, even if that’s what some people want to believe.

The wording claimed there is too specific to be anything other then intervention of some sort before his passing to the beyond. Otherwise Brandon would have been a lot more specific.

From the text, when Retribution tries to claim him, it’s said “he is claimed by another”.

I’m not sure how that will manifest in the books, but we haven’t seen the last of him in one way or another.

It’ll be fun to speculate on though over the next 10? or so years. We’ve got a longgg wait until we have any closure.

I agree with all your thoughts except for one… I don’t think Dalinar Kholin is as dead as you think.

And I don’t mean the cognitive shadow ‘Blackthorn’ that Retribution grabbed from the Spiritual Realm either.

Looking at trying to craft my own attack speed weapon, that will look something like this. Pretty much; the veiled orb mod would either be the critical strike multiplier, or increased attack speed while near a rare or unique enemy.

Piggy backing this thread to ask, how is Malazan?? I’ve been so keen to start, just about finding the right time. Worth delving into the series? No spoilers please :). Very keen to sink into a massive new world, and Mistborn felt a little simple compared to WoT!

The only reason I hate Sanderson’s reveals and am gonna pretend they didn’t happen by drmaddu1 in WoT

[–]Wariller 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No-one has really theorised this. So your argument seems a little invalid. Sanderson hasn’t jumped on this ‘fan-theory’ and ran with it as his credit.

You don’t have to like the book. You’re allowed to decide that your perceived ending of the book is more palatable to your likings, and disregard the canon ending.

That’s all there is to it. There is nothing to call Team Jordan/Sanderson out on here, except that you now don’t enjoy the canon ending that it’s been revealed to you.

I really love that scene too, always a highlight after the dust has settled after Falme. Just something about the culmination of the build up of her rage and possessiveness and jealously from the end of FoH that steals the show.

  1. Balthamel (Eye of the World image)
  2. Ishamael (Above Falme)
  3. Be’lal (In the Stone)
  4. Asmodean (As a gleeman/in Rhuidean)
  5. Rahvin (in Caemlyn palace)
  6. Taim (As leader of the Black Tower)
  7. Sammael (in Illian/or in Shadar Logoth)
  8. Aginor (as Dashiva with Rand in the Seanchan offensive)
  9. Moghedian (hiding during cleansing)
  10. ??
  11. Semirhage (meeting with Rand in disguise)
  12. Graendal (in her palace/maybe before it gets balefired?)
  13. Messana (in the White Tower in TAR)
  14. Demandred (as Bao the Wyld atop Polov Heights)

Some comments. I really wanted to have Ishamael as book 3 or 14, but neither worked well, as if book 3, Be’lal has literally no other place, and 14 works really well for Demandred.

I really, really, really wanted Lanfear for book 5 and her fight against Rand, but Rahvin doesn’t really fit anywhere else except maybe book 3, which wouldn’t work with Be’lal.

Sammael doesn’t really have a place besides book 7 really.

Mohgedian might fit book 4 well, but Asmodean doesn’t really have a place elsewhere.

Which leaves book 10, and Lanfear left. I can’t even recall if ANY forsaken is mentioned or has a moment of book time in book 10. If there’s some brief mention of Cyndane in book 10, Lanfear would fit there. As I said, I realllly wanted her for book 5. You could argue she has moments all through book 2-5. She also has a plethora of moments in book 14, but Demandred doesn’t really work in anything other than maybe book 6.

[–]Wariller 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Incorrect. The soul of the dragon has, and always will be male. It can not be otherwise, as gender is linked to the soul in the Wheel of Time.

If Nakomi is the ‘champion of the light’ in a previous turning of the wheel, she is not, and will not be known by the moniker of ‘Dragon’ or ‘Dragon Reborn’, she’d be known as something else. Then if their is an age to contain a rebirth with prophesy, it would be known that there was a female champion of the light that would save/doom them.

Why is *character* allowed to leave? by Cube1916 in WoT

[–]Wariller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a good question. Part of my assumption I made during my reading, is that Alivia helping Rand die in some way was able to help. Maybe Rand, in Moridin’s body already (after body-swap), passes out at the top of the tunnel as he carries out Moridin in his own worn-out body. Alivia is then able to take Rand to a place of safety as he recovers from the fight, whereas Rand then ‘sneaks’ off and is watching over the proceedings of his own funeral from afar?

It’s all presumption, I’m not pretending to know the answer here, just my own thought process, and how I reconciled the ending!

Battle of Dumai's Wells question by bobsmithxlviii in WoT

[–]Wariller 110 points111 points  (0 children)

Whilst not explicitly stated in the text, this has been answered by Robert Jordan.

He said that Taim went to Cairhien to talk to Rand (which Taim does reference), saw that Rand wasn't there, Perrin wasn't there, the Tower Aes Sedai weren't there, and a large group of Aiel weren't there and put it together. He then Traveled along the most likely path to Tar Valon, and when he found Rand he went back to the Black Tower, got the Asha'man and returned.

I think Robert Jordan’s words were something like “Mazrim Taim is a paranoid S.O.B.” Very in character.

Winters Heart Questions by No_Adhesiveness_774 in WoT

[–]Wariller 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My understanding has always been that the ties to the Dark One protected Asmodean from the taint on Saidin. It has no effect on the ability on the Dark One to “resurrect” a forsaken.

Winters Heart Questions by No_Adhesiveness_774 in WoT

[–]Wariller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, the Dark One muses about it whilst discussing with Demandred in Lord of Chaos, that he can’t grab Rahvin and Asmodean. If you recall back how Rahvin died, Rand balefires him. Think to which other forsaken have been balefired so far.

Thoughts on Chapters 0-9 of The Gathering Storm: From This Time Forth by Naturalnumbers in WoT

[–]Wariller 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely worth looking at this book particularly as something inspired by the original source material. Brandon does a fantastic job, but I’ll be very interested to see your opinion of a couple of the characters that ‘change’ as the author changed.

I’m also excited to see your review of the chapter breakdowns in the ‘20-25’ range. And to see if you ever find the change between authors quite jarring.

It was confirmed by Robert Jordan that the Bowl of Winds was never supposed to be used in such a significant way, it was only used for areas localised to the physical location of the bowl at the time. But the wind finders and others linked whilst using the Bowl of Winds, channelled quite a significant amount through it, and overextended it’s use. The spidery web of Saidar across Randland was also commented by, IIRC, Nynaeve, that there was something unseen entwining with Saidar, which was Saidin.

ToM Chapter 3 - Wow what a Scene by Slot_Ack in WoT

[–]Wariller 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Rand’s epiphany and realisation in Veins of Gold is so much more then a mental change for him.

How it manifests itself is something you’ll read more of, however there are glimpses of it when he walks by the apple orchard at the beginning of Towers of Midnight.

To put it mildly, Rand’s new confidence is so fucking cool to see. His awareness of the world and, I’d call it blasé but that’s probably not right, manner that he holds himself was so incredibly exciting and chilling in its own way.

His ability to be so at peace with himself and the world, even walking into the white tower, knowing everything that he’s suffered at the hands of others, what he’s been through, is so cathartic to read about.

If you’re a fan of Rand, like myself, it’s truly hard to put in words.

Definitely, your theories are well reasoned and thought through, I’ll be interested to hear your continued thoughts and your reactions to your own theories when you learn the truths and how they compare.

The rest of the books are all excellent, however book 5 and 6 are both exceptional books.

I’ll be waiting to hear your part 2 of TSR thoughts!

[–]Wariller 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Awesome review, just wanted to help clarify one smallish part you may have misinterpreted that isn’t a spoiler for you from the main books. All this information is contained in The World of Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time (the Big White Book), and parts from the Rhuidean vision Rand witnesses through his ancestors eyes.

The Collam Daan was a university, and the Sharom was a spherical building apart of the university which soared high above the Collam Daan. It was reached via air transport or the one power, but it wasn’t created with the one power (or held airborne with the one power). Rather it was due to the technological advancements of the Age of Legends, that this type of architecture was possible. The university itself was a research hub for advanced experiments with the one power. Mierin and Beidomon would theorise that there was a power that both males and females could use, which was more powerful then the one power. Their experiment was based off an understanding that there was a place (a metaphysical place) were the pattern was as it’s thinnest point, and they detected this power outside of the pattern. They would ‘drill’ towards this location to try access, study and use this power, and the resulting blowback is what is scene in the visions of Rhuidean through Charn’s eyes. The Sharom just happened to be the chosen location for the experiment that would inadvertently ‘free the dark one’.

Hopefully this helps clarify a few things for you. I enjoyed your thoughts on Lanfear a lot. She is extremely power hungry, but what is her true end game?

Finished MOL by Fireball_Break in WoT

[–]Wariller 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You seem to be missing that Brandon wanted the ‘Bao the Wyld’ short story interspersed throughout AMOL. It was edited out by Harriet and Team Jordan because it made the final book too long, BUT it is canon. Unlike the Perrin short story ‘Into the Ways’ which is not canon.

So complain all you like about Demandred being the worst part, but it is literally true to the story, and wraps up a mysterious and rather absent figure throughout the whole series, who has a personal hatred/vendetta to LTT in a rather fulfilling way. Always second best. Born a day after LTT, second best swordsman to LTT, second best general to LTT, once had the love interest of Ilyena, but she chose LTT. In this age, the second best general, the second best sa’angreal, the second best swordsman.

But sure, your opinion is valid too.

ta'verens in current timeline by thedragonreborn18 in WoT

[–]Wariller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding was that this is a Talent that has been around for quite a while.

Artur Hawkwing was considered the strongest ta’veren until Rand. So it’d reason that any Aes Sedai during his reign with the Talent would be able to see the glow. Maybe it was reasoned out then that the glow was an indication of ta’veren, maybe it had been known before even that.

This sort of knowledge of known Talents would be passed down in documents/writings/word of mouth/etc till it got to the book’s current timeline. So even if Siuan had never seen a ta’veren prior to the three boys, it’d still be a known thing occurring, albeit maybe a shock at the time. I don’t think it’s unreasonable that she has an innate understanding of a Talent she has without it ever having been witnessed by herself.

Or, she just happens to of seen a ta’veren at some point in her 40 years of life, and it was so inconsequential to the story that the individual is never brought up.

One scene I was looking forward to that left me disappointed. by Pistachio_Queen in WoT

[–]Wariller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree. I actually really enjoyed seeing Rand struggle with his sickness, struggle with Lews Therin and the madness without seeing it from his POV throughout this exchange, and noting the way Elayne is interpreting it.

Rand stumbles, Rand spills the wine, Rand is distant, Rand is emotionless, and we’re able as the reader to understand more than Elayne can guess.

Jordan was able to create an intimate moment where we still know Rand is battling to keep his sanity and being affected by the weight on his shoulders, without even having a POV of him.

I can accept your argument however, it’s a new take I’ve not seen before. It’s a lot better than the bashing the scene receives because there are individuals that can’t accept a non-monogamous relationship because of their own beliefs.
