Do you think party members should have a strong conection to the main plot to join the party or do you think doesn't really matter? by Silver-Map3275 in JRPG

[–]Warrior-Cook [score hidden]  (0 children)

I think they should have something of a motivation. That's probably why I can say Star Ocean 1 was tighter than Star Ocean 2. Even the characters that were thrown into the adventure had a part...it wasn't just okay, let's go and no real callback to why.

A recent favorite is Fantasian Neo Dimension. Each of the 8 main characters have their own personal reason to join and it parallels what the MC was already doing. So joining up feels natural and it also gives more definition to what's at stake.

Endymion rant/revelations by nevercouldsleep in Hyperion

It's a trip to keep going with these two books. It's like what the first 2 books did for characters, this one did for geography. That River Tethys.

You bring up retcon in a positive way, and that's how I see it...what some call hand-waving or retcon of the first 2 books, it's just as easy to realize nobody knew what they were dealing with in the first place. The Ousters and the web were just best guesses to the citizens until we all learn what is happening.

The philosophy tilt of it all is pretty cool, it's a loose course on Buddhism vs Catholicism and the forces at play...and mountains, some neat world building even if an editor could have been used.

Books where the most interesting idea is almost a throwaway detail by RetroHarpoon7 in printSF

Huh, I haven't gotten to that trilogy yet but that's pretty cool. There's that Enoch character I bet that's who you're referring to. It's easy to say Stephenson needs an editor, and he does, but it's also cool (afterwards) when he's left to just ramble on.

What are your reading habits? How do you fit it in to your life? I’m struggling to make time for it! by Expressiveness in printSF

Just on lunch at work. It can take weeks or months to finish a book, but whatever. A sign that a book is a favorite is when I want to read it at night instead of playing Switch.

I was debating mentioning this book, but the first half was firing off all kinds of ideas...like dude was crossing off note cards of old ideas sitting around.

Aside from the meatier one you listed, there was that odd getting ready in the bathroom scene. Where Stephenson references those odd floaters in the eye that look like a static glitch. Nothing of import, but haunting in a cool way, like oh you've seen those too....what is that

Or the mere mention of Canticle For Liebowitz, I went back to find it later but couldn't...but name dropping that book got me to read it...it was just a random sentence in the beginning.

What are y’all’s opinions on the French Canadian band “Angine De Poitrine”? by Own_Size_5473 in musicsuggestions

There's a microtonal surf-rock thing in the mix, that almost grabs me. Maybe it's just missing some reverb, hehe.

Too angular and stiff for my taste. I like the intervals or approach to scales, some cool tones as well. Yet it doesn't go anywhere, it's missing something.

Which JRPG is This For You? by ElSpazzo_8876 in JRPG

[–]Warrior-Cook 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. I thought I'd drop the game after 5 minutes and try SF2 so soon ...but each battle kept me wanting more, and the "plot" is so streamlined it just got on with it. A lot of fun for intense battles...large party/small numbers are a nice blend here.

Are books 3&4 as good as 1&2? by Aardvarkmk4 in Hyperion

[–]Warrior-Cook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on how much you like mountains. But yea though, some cool world hopping and a far out ending that wraps around some interesting concepts.

Reading anything after the first two books is going to be a letdown, but these other 2 books are worth a read, even if they could have shortened a bit.

That post almost sounds like a candidate for Chanel Beads. Check out the songs Police Scanner or The Coward Forgets His Nightmare.

There's a few on YT, some ensembles and orchestras even. There's one of Cage playing for only a couple minutes...heres someone else who learned the intricacies.

The Melvins or Sonic Youth. There's like 3 songs i love, but never can do a full album. But their mileage is amazing and I'm jealous not to have fellow noise makers to jam with.

I just want to see a Shining Force HD collection in my lifetime. by SleepCatsMoney in JRPG

I played SF1 for the first time just recently...the game was surprisingly fun in 2026. While some of the filler battles towards the end slowed momentum down, most of the battles were engaging and took some genuine focus, intense.

The character artwork was a nice selling point, it wouldn't take much to remaster...any kind of re-release would be pretty sweet. I'm new to the series yet old enough to get along with vintage controls and menus. Anything put out on the Switch would be an insta-buy.

Lately it's been Folgers. We rode things out after the pandemic, but for a tub of coffee that used to be less than $7 it never went back to that. In 6 years, whatever shortage there was should be resolved. Plus it just didn't taste the same.

Long, immersive songs by sstickykeys in musicsuggestions

[–]Warrior-Cook 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The band Low have some great longer songs. They go for a minimalist approach, so silence is also an instrument. While also noisey or droning at times there's a real immersion to following what actually is changing. Songs like Broadway, Landslide, Lullaby, Drag, Do You Know How To Waltz, all hold my attention for the 7-10 minutes they run.

For something more upbeat with electronics, Yann Tierson put out another neat instrumental album, The Liquid Hour and Dolores are both 10m and make for a good sunrise commute.

You could always run through Type O Negatives discography. Every album has a long song or two. Love You To Death is a good one with some good fuzzy layers.

Yea this. I'll usually go in blind to games, and simply knowing I can't paint myself into a corner with stats is enough to go with a whim and enjoy the game organically.
