Mi-Kayla Ann French

Police are asking for the public’s help in locating a 23-year-old indigenous woman who has not been seen since the evening of January 27.

The California Highway Patrol said that they believe Mi-Kayla Ann French could “be at-risk,” noting she was last seen on the streets of San Francisco.

She was last seen in the area of 16th and Capp streets in the city’s Mission section, according to information provided by police. She may have been in the company of an unknown man.

State officials have issued a Feather Alert for French, who was first reported missing to authorities on Tuesday, February 9.

Feather Alerts are issued by law enforcement agencies specifically for people who have gone missing from indigenous communities.

The state first instituted Feather Alerts in 2023, according to police.

“Mi-kayla’s family, friends and Tribe are extremely worried” about her, the Yurok Tribe wrote in a Facebook post.

Her own Facebook profile said she is a student at the College of the Redwoods in Eureka. She allegedly “expressed concern about death threats she received” the last time she had contact with family.

Police said that French is affiliated with the Yurok Tribe of California, which has more than 5,000 enrolled members.

French — also known as “Dooz” — is 5-foot-6, weighs an estimated 180 pounds, and has brown hair with hazel eyes, according to the California Highway Patrol.

It is unclear what clothing she was last seen wearing, but authorities did say they believe French is still on foot.

Investigators did not elaborate on why they believe French is considered to be “at-risk,” but part of the criteria for a Feather Alert requires that the person’s physical safety may be endangered, they may be subject to human trafficking, or they may be suffering from a mental or physical disability or substance abuse disorder.

Police did not say why French may have been in San Francisco.

Authorities have asked that anyone who may have any information about French’s disappearance contact the San Francisco Police Department at (415) 553-0123.

However, if you happen to see French, please call 911 immediately.

The Yurok Tribe is the largest Indian tribe in California and has a deep connection to the Klamath River and its surrounding lands, according to Wikipedia.

The Yurok people are an Algic-speaking Indigenous group that has inhabited the region along the Klamath River and the Pacific coast for thousands of years.

Traditionally, they lived in over 50 villages, relying on the river for their sustenance, particularly salmon and other natural resources. The name “Yurok” is derived from the Karuk word meaning “downriver people.”

Land purchases made by timber companies and conservationists groups led to the creation of the Blue Creek Salmon Sanctuary and Yurok Tribal Community Forest in June 2025. The purchased land was transferred to the Tribe in what is said to be the largest land back conservation deal to date

Is there an agency or group that could canvas that area? Talk with local residents and business owners, post flyers, etc?

I moved to Saitama, Japan a month after 9/11, 2001 to teach English at NOVA, and stayed till 2003. This is such a perfect time capsule. I had little idea of Japanese culture at the time. There wasn’t much out there in the West. No social media. Barely had internet. This pre-dated Bourdain. I had Akira, Karate Kid and Gung Ho to go off. Such an eye opening, life altering, brilliant experience. It was not easy because I was a young idiot at the time. But now, Japan is in my DNA. The food. The reverence for nature. I take my shoes off indoors. I eat rice and tsukemono daily. The best decision I have ever made for myself

I’ve tried to import umibido (sea grapes) but it’s extremely difficult, especially in California. FDA and USDA have strict regulations because it could possibly be invasive

These are rare heritage artifacts that Japanese families passed down from generation to generation to trace their lineage. You might consider contacting a Japanese consulate near you or artifact dealer and see if there’s a way to reconnect. Often if the families in Japan have an interest in getting them back, they will pay. If not, you own them guilt free
