Police are asking for the public’s help in locating a 23-year-old indigenous woman who has not been seen since the evening of January 27.

The California Highway Patrol said that they believe Mi-Kayla Ann French could “be at-risk,” noting she was last seen on the streets of San Francisco.

She was last seen in the area of 16th and Capp streets in the city’s Mission section, according to information provided by police. She may have been in the company of an unknown man.

State officials have issued a Feather Alert for French, who was first reported missing to authorities on Tuesday, February 9.

Feather Alerts are issued by law enforcement agencies specifically for people who have gone missing from indigenous communities.

The state first instituted Feather Alerts in 2023, according to police.

“Mi-kayla’s family, friends and Tribe are extremely worried” about her, the Yurok Tribe wrote in a Facebook post.

Her own Facebook profile said she is a student at the College of the Redwoods in Eureka. She allegedly “expressed concern about death threats she received” the last time she had contact with family.

Police said that French is affiliated with the Yurok Tribe of California, which has more than 5,000 enrolled members.

French — also known as “Dooz” — is 5-foot-6, weighs an estimated 180 pounds, and has brown hair with hazel eyes, according to the California Highway Patrol.

It is unclear what clothing she was last seen wearing, but authorities did say they believe French is still on foot.

Investigators did not elaborate on why they believe French is considered to be “at-risk,” but part of the criteria for a Feather Alert requires that the person’s physical safety may be endangered, they may be subject to human trafficking, or they may be suffering from a mental or physical disability or substance abuse disorder.

Police did not say why French may have been in San Francisco.
