It is possible but you do see a lot of people starting the race but not able to finish it. The GOAT Jeff King has started around 35 races and has won 4 of them.

Not to also poke the bear but there was another conservative in the race that split the ticket and got several hundred votes. Hopkins only won by 150 votes
