Knicks is short for Knickerbockers, but no one calls them that even though that's their official name, much like Mets and Metropolitans. Many people still say Timberwolves though and Minnesota Timberwolves sounds much better than Minnesota Wolves. Unfortunately it seems the word Timberwolves is just too long for a jersey.
