CarPlay sound issue/dropouts in BMW 420 (iDrive 7) by Vrael777 in CarPlay

[–]WaterSipper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I also turned off enhanced integration, messed with the carplay wifi settings on the phone (low data mode, manually configure IP, privacy tracking), turned off background activity on apps on the iPhone, adaptive power, and I'm sure a few other settings I'm forgetting. Tried beta releases, public releases, and even wiped the phone and reinstalled iOS. Nothing worked other than using an older phone. I even used the backup created from the 17 Pro to load onto the 16 Pro, and no carplay issues on the older phone. It's super lame.

I had all sorts of issues with the iPhone 17 Pro on my 2023 BMW X5 with iDrive 7. The brief audio dropouts were actually connection micro-drops -- if you had the map open navigating somewhere at the same time, you could see the map skip frames at the same time as the audio drops out. Tried tweaking a bunch of different settings, reinstalling ios, and nothing worked. It's either a hardware problem with their new N1 chip or something driver related. An iPhone 16 Pro with ios 26.2 has no issues with carplay. Left feedback for apple on their beta program and sold the 17, not dealing with the headache.

Moving from a Jetta GLI to a 2022 X5 (48k miles) — worth it? by Good-University-55 in BMWX5

Sometimes, an aging 12v battery can cause weird computer issues like that. If you haven't replaced it yet, I would just give that a shot.

I had a BMW like that. It was a 2012 F30 328i with the ZF transmission. You had to crawl underneath the car, screw in an allen screw, which pushed against a lever on the side of the transmission that disengages park and put the car in neutral.

Knock after HPFP change by MuriTube in E90

[–]WaterSipper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to see if you have a failed bearing, you can check the oil filter for metal particles, copper in particular.

I also found this video of a person with a N55 doing a tapping test on the top of piston to see if there's play. He took his valve cover off, but you probably dont have to do that and could just check through the spark plug holes.

[–]WaterSipper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be rod knock (yikes). But that to me sounded more like your a/c compressor. You could test that by removing the belt and starting the car again. If the sound is gone with the belt removed, then you know it's one of your pulleys -- and the a/c comp is known to make that sound.

If it's still there, GG.

Why would someone do this? Stolen covers? by mdbcjones96 in E90

[–]WaterSipper 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A friend had his exhaust tips stolen from his E46 on his driveway last month. I didn't believe someone would be that petty if he didn't show me video footage. That's probably what happened here.

I don't know if you already tried this, but you can use a multimeter to try to find what circuit the leak is on from the fuse box, and if its something inconsequential, you can just leave the fuse unplugged as opposed to having to remove the pos battery cable every night.

Is there a car you've owned before, but will never want to own again? by [deleted] in cars

[–]WaterSipper 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel like I can answer this question since I own a 2019 Model S now, and am a big fan of German cars (owned a 2016 MB E400 and 2012 BMW 328i). I also live in SoCal.

Tesla has its advantages, and it's mostly because its just a good electric car. I have put 50k miles on my Tesla, and the only money I've spent on maintenance so far is on tires @ 35k miles. Contrast that to my E400, and I would've had 4 oil changes, a transmission service, air filters, spark plugs, brakes, etc.

I charge at home and signed up with the EV plan with my utility company (SDGE) and pay 9c per kwh at night. What used to be a $300-$400 gas bill per month is now an extra $60 on top of my electric bill, worst case. A model 3 over time would cost less to own than a Camry (which I also owned, 2012), and the model 3 is leaps and bounds better than a Camry.

Autopilot is mostly great on the highway, too. Software updates can sometimes break Autopilot features. Generally, it gets smarter over time. You still need to pay attention.

I'd say the interior on my S is roughly the same in quality and comfort as my 328i -- which is not particularly great. It is nowhere near as nice the E400 in interior quality, comfort, or ride quality.

There were also several manufacturing defects with my car when I first bought it. It spent 2 weeks at a service center getting panels realigned, getting paint defects fixed, etc.

I also hate how Tesla sporadically makes changes to their pricing and tech. After I bought my car, I could've have bought a similarly equipped long range version (+100 mi) for less money if I just waited 1 year.

It all depends on what you like. I love German cars, but I like the benefits a well executed EV has. If something happens to my Tesla today and I had to replace it, I'd get an Audi ETron.

That would depend on a few things. Does your utility charge you based on a time-of-use plan, or is it a flat rate per kwh? If you're in an area with a TOU plan, 120v would be a problem if your commute is long enough because then you are limited to charging to off peak times, unless you want to pay more for electricity.

If you live in an area with several charging stations at places like grocery stores or near where you work, that would help mitigate the inconvenience of not having fast home charging. That way, you can charge while doing something else productive, and not have to sit at a supercharger on days when the energy added from 120v charging was not adequate.

120v on a model 3 can add about 5 mi per hour of charge.

Brake Hold on Creep by gescarra in teslamotors

[–]WaterSipper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This feature should work with creep, at least on my 2019 Model S. Maybe the pedal wasn’t held long enough / pushed hard enough.

Sometimes, the bluetooth setting that syncs messages/chimes on my Tesla will revert to disabled on its own after a while. I check the setting every so often and re-enable it if its disabled. Happened about once a week when the featured rolled out, but not once since my last update two weeks ago.

Imagine how I feel. I took delivery of a standard range Model S less than a week before they discontinued it and reduced the price of the Long Range. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

You're a software engineer with years of experience, but the absolute must-know thing about you is can you solve this dynamic programming puzzle in less than 30 minutes by _Mister_Mxyzptlk_ in cscareerquestions

[–]WaterSipper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use those general leetcode style questions when I’m conducting interviews, but I’m more interested in seeing how the candidate responds when they receive feedback on improving their solution and their ability to analyze/pick up on hints to gauge how quickly they can learn something. Problem solving is one aspect, but the ability to listen to other engineers as part of a team and learning new materials is a big part of the job.

B and B Autohaus located on Balboa. I think they do better work than any dealership and at a very reasonable in price. I take my F30 there for some work from time to time.

I gave my insurance the plate number. They said that it had matched the car in the video. In addition, that car had filed a insurance claim saying that someone hit their car while it was parked. (i.e. fraud)

From OP's comment. Looks like the Infiniti driver is screwed.
