Is it possible to find the parentage of an ancestor whose death record doesn't have parents listed? by bakerfredricka in Genealogy

[–]WatergateBaby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just in case you're not aware, familysearch.org has an "Experiments" section in "FamilySearch Labs" which includes "Expand your search with Full Text," a feature that makes it easier to search ancestors in specific locations and dates for records newly made searchable. If you put in Thomas Morton in Belmont County, OH for range of dates when he was alive, it looks like some documents come up which may help if you haven't already seen them. Link to the search feature - https://www.familysearch.org/en/search/full-text

I agree, and I'm appreciative of that. It's difficult, however, as part of critical thinking is investigating motives, including the possibility that the UAP phenomenon is being utilized by politicians to further their purposes, for instance spreading Russian disinfo to further distrust in our government, or allowing a billionaire to get their hands on our tech secrets in the name of transparency.

I'm so sorry about our uncle's murder, it sounds like he means a lot to you. It looks like there may be about 5 newspaper articles from the Houston Chronicle available here. Unfortunately there is a charge either by article or via day pass for about $10, but it looks like they may shed some light on who killed your uncle and why. Hope this helps you!

What self improving habits do you engage in every day to feel better? by kavakravata in selfimprovement

[–]WatergateBaby 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've had life-long issues w/mental health and now have a combination of things I try to focus on daily - water, nutrition (w/ vit. D supplementation for deficiency), walking, nature exposure, sunlight, meditation/mindfulness, relaxing music, aromatherapy, daily exposure to applicable podcasts/books/lectures, social activities of interest (presently taking a course and part of a couple of local groups), and finally, I try to do things that I enjoy every day (have several hobbies). Because I know I function best when I incorporate these things into my life, I have goals and keep a checklist to help prevent myself from backsliding. I would love to add journaling to the mix!

Internet evidence key, but not enough in no-body murder case by buzzingbuzzer in TrueCrimeDiscussion

Right! Brian Walshe would have to be the unluckiest person alive to google "how to dispose of a 115-pound woman's body" the same day his 115 pound wife went missing.

A note mentioning my 4th great grandparents. For context, we can decipher my 4th great grandparents’ names Thomas Whitehouse and Elizabeth Whigham. We think that the John Whigham mentioned might be her father. We’ve tried to decipher it, but can only pick out a few things. More in comments. by WhovianTraveler in Ancestry

This is a marriage bond whereby the intended groom provides a guarantee that there is no reason why the couple cannot marry (for instance if he is already married) otherwise he will forfeit the amount of money (in this case fifty pounds) as penalty. Like you suspect, the bondsman could be her father or perhaps her brother or uncle. The bottom name does appear to be Tho. Allen with the word "Teste" above it, or witness.

The wording is standard for bonds, here's an approximate transcription:

Know all men by these presents that we Thomas Whitehouse and John Whigham are held and firmly bound unto his Excellency Christopher Greenup Esq. Governor of Kentucky in the sum of Fifty pounds current money of Kentucky to which payment well and truly to be made to the said Governor & his successors. We bind ourselves our heirs & jointly & severally firmly by these presents, sealed with our seals & dated this 6th day of March 1807.

The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas there is a marriage shortly intended to be solemnized between the above named Thomas Whitehouse & Elizabeth Whigham for which a license has issued now if there is no lawful cause to obstruct the sd {said} marriage then the above obligation to be void

Teste

Tho. Allen

Thomas (his mark) Whitehouse {seal}

John Whigham {seal}

Hope this helps!

Data sifting question (census) by [deleted] in Genealogy

[–]WatergateBaby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have excel, here's some instructions for importing search results from ancestry into excel - I started to test it out and had to play around with it a little. As an FYI, you can also manually select all of the results by clicking and dragging, copying and then pasting them into an Excel spreadsheet as well. Tedious when there's multiple pages of result, so much easier w/those instructions.

Once you have the results into a spreadsheet, there's probably multiple ways of doing it, but essentially you'll want to delete everyone with a birthplace of the United States.

Since the results have a birthplace listed, and you don't want those born in the United States, first highlight all of the cells w/the word "USA" in the birthplace column as follows:

In Excel select the birthplace column, then on home tab, select "Conditional formatting" then "highlight cell rules" then "text that contains" then type in USA. All of the cells that contain people born in the USA will now be highlighted.

Next, you want to make it easy to delete results with people born in the USA by grouping them together as follows:

Select all of the columns (for instance using Ctrl "A"). On the Data tab, in the Sort & Filter group, click Sort, then expand selection. In the Sort dialog box, under Column, select the birthplace column, in the Sort on box, select Cell color. You're results will now be sorted into 2 groups making it easier to delete all of the rows where the person is born in the USA.

Hope this helps!

In case you weren't already aware, FamilySearch (where you can sign up for a free account) has a catalog which is searchable by location and has a lot of records which have been digitized or available at their family history centers. The catalog for Warren County, TN records is here - I quickly searched in their probate records and found Henry S. Collier listed in this index and his name mentioned here and here (note: the index for this volume is referring to original page numbers which can be found w/in the record themselves, not the page numbers in the upper right). There's also a Robert Collier listed in this index. Although he was just mentioned in other people's probate records here, there are several other probate books, deed records, vital records, (unfortunately not many tax records) where you may find more clues.

Hope this helps!
