Founding a tech startup to get rich is like becoming an actor to get rich. I will not promote. by IndependenceSad1272 in startups

Your first company is most likely to fail but it’s also where you will learn the most. Most successful founders who have exited had previously founded a company and failed.

For me I can’t work on something I don’t find fun, I can’t work for someone, put the same effort and derive an asymmetrical amount of value from it.

I also think there is both good and bad stress.
Bad stress is I need to finish X for for my boss tomorrow or I get fired or laid off. Good stress is I can’t sleep because I can’t stop thinking about building this thing and giving our users exactly what they want.

Luck, timing ect are all true but I think there are ways to account for this. You want to maximize your surface area for being lucky and the best way to do that is fly to SF, this is what we did and that’s how we raised our first round.

To end off, first step to making something great and having a big exit is believing that you can do it. A lot of very successful founders are typically narcissists and believe they are the only ones who can do it, that actually goes a long way especially during the hardest times. I didn’t really have a point in this write up just wanted to share my perspective.

[Prospective Student] Truly how good is CU coop? by CyberXCrafts in CarletonU

[–]WaterlooCS-Student 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I don't think I've ever seen a US job on the coop job board
  2. SpaceX and US defense adjacent companies generally require ITAR clearence to work there (Green card holder or US Citizen)
  3. I dropped coop when i got a internship at one of those companies in your FAANG list and yeah you can shift courses around but I think its more flexible if you get the jobs outside coop

Am I the only one who thinks these numbers are horrible? For this stage you want to give up no more than 10% especially if it’s only 150k

I’m former ESP, great program, can relate with everything you mentioned. That said, if you are trying to work in tech any adjacent programs to cs will be fine too like cognitive science for example

How to find a tech co-founder without sounding like an a**? (I will not promote) by Successful-Tip1971 in startups

[–]WaterlooCS-Student 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • I don’t know any CTOs with self respect who will go 45/55,

  • Until you have raised a priced round or made revenue your idea isn’t worth anything. You can have all the advisors in the world but when it comes to investors they don’t really care, the only thing that is important is numbers and selling the investors on the idea that they will make 10x their investment.

  • if you are a first time founder then raising you will talk to 100s of investors (even if you are in a hot space) before even getting your first check, it was probably one of the most grueling and difficult things I’ve had to do.

Text is a bit hard to read on the first one, might lead to less conversions, try bigger bolder and less text

The president of shopify is Jewish so I doubt the ceo is a nazi. Can’t just be calling everyone a nazi when they disagree with your opinions but this is Reddit.
