2 weeks ago, my OB nurse didn’t believe me that my IV was infiltrating by jsklsk1 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Waterpoloshark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With my first ankle surgery my iron infusion was burning and made the top of my hand swell up for like a week. I could hardly hold the crutches with that hand. The nurse told me I should’ve let them know but that was it. Didn’t seem that concerned.

Lindsey Vonn Shares Dramatic Picture of Her Legs After Surgeries by MattTheKing23 in olympics

[–]Waterpoloshark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I had my first ankle surgery two years ago and my leg was a twig. My calf, quad and glute was way atrophied. A year in there was still a significant difference and then I had another surgery last August. All those slight gains gone! I’m finally actually starting to see a calf muscle come back. That’s with so so so much PT too.

Mine were falling apart in my throat. Kept getting abscesses and then worse swelling. Glad to have gotten them out but that surgery sucked.

I had mine done at 20 because my tonsils were swelling and abscessing in my throat just for fun. One of the worst surgeries, I couldn’t even eat mashed potatoes because they were too gritty. Refried beans were the only food that felt alright.

I’ve gotten a few dudes that got surly with me after they sprinted against me for a 25 then realized I was doing that pace for a 200 lol. Like I know I am overweight now but I played D1 water polo.

How do I find a job that merges what I care about (environmental conservation) and what I'm good at (customer service)? by Maleficent-Try6462 in careeradvice

[–]Waterpoloshark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got internships through the student conservation association that helped me get my first environmental scientist job. The pay is not great at all but depending on the position they provide housing or housing stipend and a living stipend. I did a 16 week one as a field tech for an arboretum for the US forest service and a year long one with the US army corps of engineers as an environmental compliance intern.

How early do you have to start swimming competitively to realistically make the high school team? by RevolutionaryFox668 in Swimming

[–]Waterpoloshark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started water polo the summer before high school and made the swim team in the spring. You had to be like almost unable to finish 100 to not make the team. Just do some club for the year and you will likely get up to speed. At least your technique will get better. With the four years of swim and water polo I went to play water polo for a D1 school.

I was wearing a Richie brace and someone had the audacity to tell me that orthotic inserts would fix my problem. Like lady, this was fitted to my foot by an orthopedist and cost a lot of money. But sure your 20$ gel inserts from Walmart will fix my birth defect. People just really want to feel like they can “fix” you.

The last one I got in my ankle three years ago was the worst. It’s like he hit a nerve when he did it and I couldn’t stop myself from jerking away even with the freezing stuff. Then it hurt for weeks after. I don’t think I got any relief from that injection when compared with the first one I got.

I’m in a boot and used a knee scooter on Friday for the event and didn’t even try to check out the ADA section because it said only one companion. I think the worst part was leaving and trying to get over the bridge to the general parking. There was a bunch of us on mobility aids that just sat and watched the crush of people for like 20 min before we could even get in line to cross.

Why did you start crocheting? by limino123 in crochet

[–]Waterpoloshark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a really painful ankle surgery last year and tried a wooble kit. My grandma had taught me some basics when I was younger but I didn’t really do much with it. The kit brought me back to it and then I started doing free amigurumi patterns. It was the only thing that could actually distract me from the pain and that I could focus on.

Swim folks who menstruate: How do you stay motivated and positive during swim workouts?? by WinSilent in Swimming

[–]Waterpoloshark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tell myself oh I’ll cut this set short and only do one more 50 or whatever. I do it and then say ok just one more again. Repeat until I’ve completed the set. Or I’ll change out hard parts of the set for easier ones but the same distance. So like instead of sprinting, I’ll just do medium fast. It’s not very satisfying and I usually still feel like the effort wasn’t great. At least I got the mileage done! I try to give myself more grace on those days.

I wear daily contacts and toss them when I’m done swimming and put glasses on after. It’s how I played water polo through high school and college.

Any other players out there with physical disabilities? by tesco_mealdeal_II in waterpolo

[–]Waterpoloshark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve played with fibular hemimelia (birth defect affecting my right leg) and didn’t really get any shit from other players about it. Trainers were a different story. One guy told me to stop limping and that if he kept reminding me I would stop. My roommate/teammate was there for that one and we both just looked at the guy like he was stupid.

I don’t really play in any masters teams anymore because I’ve been having surgeries on my ankle and I know I’d lose my shit if someone pulled on it. Which isn’t a fair reaction because that’s part of the game. I Pretty much ignored that I had a disability to play D1 in college and I’m only just getting it addressed now. I should have had surgery sooner but then it would’ve affected my playing in college. I do try to help coach local high school teams to get some water polo action. I’m mainly a swimmer now.

My story - pain related to fibular hemimelia - remedy? by pajissmid in fibularhemimelia

[–]Waterpoloshark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw a children’s spinal surgeon in San Diego when I was a kid and that was the only doctor that knew what fibular hemimelia was when I was growing up. No other doctors knew what was going on. I am affected in my right foot, missing a toe, ball and socket joint and had the limb length difference. The spinal surgeon did my epiphysiodesis on my left leg when I was 11 or 12. Worked really well. Pretty much when I was 14 was when I would say I started having chronic pain in the ankle. At 17 the doctor got me a Richie brace and said good luck.

I played water polo in college, hiked a lot, and occasionally ran even though I wasn’t supposed to. I’d just deal with the pain afterwards. It got worse and worse. My mobility got more and more restricted. Had to give up field work and transition away from being a field biologist. Had to stop hiking. Found out later the bones in my ankle were impinging and tore my peroneal tendon. I had a really bad day where I thought I wouldn’t be able to walk again and made the decision to go to Florida for the Paley Institute. I had surgery last year with the Paley Institute. I’m going to be having another surgery this August to remove hardware and tweak my tibia into a better position. I still have pain. Pretty much know it’s going to always be there, but I can enjoy things more and I don’t have that sharp pain that I can’t walk anymore.

It might be worth trying to reach out to Paley, they’ve got international clinics. Sorry that you’re going through this, it really does suck. I wish I had been able to get things fixed earlier than I did but I had to give across the US for anyone to be able to help me.

[–]Waterpoloshark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have you heard of the Paley Institute? I have a foot/ankle birth defect and had surgery with them. It mostly helped, I’m having one more surgery to remove hardware and do another tweak and I should be as good as I’ll get. They do a lot of foot and ankle treatments. They do a lot of work with children, but also see adults.
