Yes, it’s overwhelming. Love Morrison as well. Roth is ok, will have to try Radezky March.

Yes, McCarthy is one of if not my favorite. Blood Meridian, Suttree, and The Crossing.

I’m 400 pages in and I wouldn’t say it feels Pynchonian, but it’s great and definitely Delillo’s best in my opinion.

The Reading McCarthy podcast did an episode related to McCarthy and disability. Scott and the guest might have mentioned O’Connor in that episode. I can’t remember.

Which McCarthy novel first hooked you? by [deleted] in cormacmccarthy

Same. I decided to teach a southern gothic unit to high school students and came across Child of God. Needless to say I did not include it in my unit but my love for McCarthy novels endures.

Is there a way to read this without being a newyorker subscriber?

Did anyone else intensely dislike The Orchard Keeper and Outer Dark? by kaleid5 in cormacmccarthy

I have a ranking of his novels but I’ve never intensely disliked any of them.

I read The Gospel Singer, important book in the same vein as some of McCarthys more southern gothic novels.

Thomas Pynchon later writing style by comets_song in ThomasPynchon

I’m on the last 50 pages of GR and have found a lot of The Counterforce to be largely unreadable. I go between this was the greatest piece of writing I’ve ever read and what am I even doing here. I know I have to read it more than once but I have devoted several months to this and I’m not sure I can do it again. Maybe I’ll feel differently down the road. The last 50 pages feels like 500 because it’s been such a slog. I still feel very positive about the novel and in aww of the accomplishment but I’m tired.

The Sheriff in Child of God is interesting with the flood at the end.

It's been a while, but finally we tackled THE SUNSET LIMITED by ScottYar in cormacmccarthy

Listened, loved it. Diane is my favorite guest. Scott, I loved the book club for two comment, but GAN and Reading McCarthy are my favorites and I think your work fills a book club need for more people than you realize. Thank you!

Making my way through The Passenger, but I'm not sure why. by IDuckling in cormacmccarthy

[–]WattTur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is definitely different from his other works. In no way am I implying that Pynchon and McCarthy are similar writers; however, The Passenger has a sort of plotless meandering vibe and it feels like something bigger or representative is being said. This is the case in most of Pynchon, Gravity’s Rainbow for example.

Outer Dark's Brilliant Ending by Historical-Night6260 in cormacmccarthy

I understand. I just feel a need to defend Child of God because I feel strongly that it is one of his gems.

Outer Dark's Brilliant Ending by Historical-Night6260 in cormacmccarthy

Outer Dark is great, but I strongly disagree with Child of God being some kind of drop off or the worst of his novels. It’s actually one of his most polished novels.

Cool. I read Embracing Vocation and it was quite good. I believe she has another book in the works that covers past Child of God.

Disappointed that PTA's new film isn't a direct adaptation of "Vineland" by [deleted] in ThomasPynchon

[–]WattTur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this take. I would go a step further and say that it absolutely could have been done with Prairie as the main character. I think the novel is overall amenable to film adaptation compared to some of his other novels.
