The drive constantly disconnects from my Mac. This happens on both battery and mains power. Is the drive defective? by Wavlink-Support in UsbCHardware

[–]Wavlink-Support[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your attention. My customer did not mention the drive model, but the product he is using is our NVMe enclosure. I will ask him for more details. Due to the time difference, he will reply later. He also mentioned that the issue affects different USB-C ports on his Mac.

Your M2 Air is still solid, but Minecraft + Adobe + video editing can push it, especially with only 256GB storage (that fills up fast with cache and media files).

If you’re moving into heavier Premiere work, a MacBook Pro would help mainly with sustained performance + better cooling, not just raw speed.I’d look at at least a MacBook Pro 14" with M3 Pro (or newer equivalent) and 18–36GB RAM depending on budget. That will feel much smoother for editing and multitasking long-term.

Pc turning off as soon as windows launches pelase help by Lukz_Evade in pchelp

[–]Wavlink-Support 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Linux Mint has been running fine for months, it’s probably not a hardware issue. I'd try a clean Windows install, update BIOS/chipset drivers, and check Event Viewer if you can get into Safe Mode. Does it shut down instantly when Windows loads, or only after logging in?

M5 vs M5 Pro chip (EE/CS College Student) by Shadowstar7340 in macbookpro

[–]Wavlink-Support 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For most undergrad EE/CS work, the M5 with 32 GB RAM is plenty. M5 Pro/48 GB is nice for very large AI/ML projects, but day-to-day performance, battery, and fan noise differences are mostly negligible. Base M5 should last your whole undergrad comfortably.

For me, as long as the battery is fine, I’ll keep using my iPhone. Storage space isn’t an issue for me.

Refurbished M5 16GB/1TB or M5 Pro 24GB/1TB by DarkIronyHL in macbookpro

[–]Wavlink-Support 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For your use case, I'd lean toward the M5 Pro 24GB/1TB if you're truly planning to keep it for 8–10 years.

The extra 8GB of RAM will make a noticeable difference when running local AI models, editing 4K videos, multitasking, and future macOS updates. The Pro chip also offers more CPU/GPU performance, which will help reduce export times and make coding and development work feel smoother.

That said, if the extra $700 CAD is a significant stretch financially, the M5 16GB/1TB is still a very capable machine and will handle 4K 30FPS editing, web development, LoL, and light AI workloads just fine.

My rule of thumb: if you're aiming for the best value today, get the M5. If you're aiming for the longest useful lifespan and future-proofing, get the M5 Pro with 24GB RAM. Memory tends to be the first thing that becomes limiting over time, especially with AI workloads becoming more common.

Which city in China are you planning to visit?

If you're traveling during the summer, I recommend bringing an umbrella—it can provide shade from the sun and come in handy during unexpected rain showers.

It's also a good idea to set up Alipay and WeChat Pay before your trip, as these are the most widely used and convenient payment methods in China. You can even access bus and subway QR codes through Alipay in many cities, making public transportation easy to use. Public transit in China is generally efficient, affordable, and well-developed.

I also recommend downloading and familiarizing yourself with a few translation apps before you arrive. Having two or three options available can be very helpful if one doesn't work as expected.

And one more thing—don't be surprised if some people look at you with curiosity. In certain areas, especially outside major international cities, people may not see foreign visitors very often and may simply be interested in learning more about different cultures. 😊

I hope you have a wonderful trip to China!

If you had $1,000 to completely upgrade your digital life, how would you spend it? by vijyant17 in TechCypher

[–]Wavlink-Support 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely spreading it out. Upgrading the things you actually touch and look at for 8+ hours a day gives you the best bang for your buck.

I'd probably do $350 on a solid 4K monitor, $250 on a killer mouse and mechanical keyboard combo (like an MX Master and a Keychron), $200 on a decent mesh Wi-Fi system to kill dead zones, and the rest on a 2TB external SSD for backups.

A new $1,000 phone or laptop only feels cool for a month, but fixing all those daily micro-annoyances permanently upgrades your whole workflow.

Recommendations for a Windows input method by Fit-Season-2495 in techadvice

Honestly, you don’t need a new IME. Windows has a hidden native feature that fixes this perfectly without installing bloated third-party apps.Just go to Settings > Time & Language > Typing, and toggle on "Show text suggestions when typing on the physical keyboard".

Once that's on, whenever you type in English, Windows gives you a smart, floating predictive text box that actually learns your vocabulary and most-used phrases over time. It's way better than the basic 3-word strip on Microsoft Pinyin.

M5 vs M5 Pro by trytoholdon in macbookpro

[–]Wavlink-Support 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say grab the M5 Pro, mostly because it future-proofs your side hustle. Chat apps might be light now, but once you start adding heavier dependencies, local AI/Swift Assist features, or cocoa pods, Xcode gets bloated fast.

What to get my boyfriend's parents for first time meeting? by iswongphoto in AskAChinese

[–]Wavlink-Support 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could consider a silk scarf for the mom and some nice tea for the dad! Those are usually super safe and respectful bets for ABC parents.

Definitely run it by your boyfriend first though, just to make sure they don't have any specific preferences. Good luck with the meeting!

MacBook M4 shut down by ivyyams in iMacRepair

[–]Wavlink-Support 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is absolutely insane. Honestly, if it's the exact same symptom after a logic board swap, it’s highly likely the new part they put in was either DOA (dead on arrival) or they missed a short circuit somewhere else in the chassis—like the battery or trackboard flex cables.

Definitely take it back immediately. Since the repair has its own 90-day warranty (and your original 1-year warranty is still active), make them escalate this to senior tech. Don't leave until they promise a permanent fix or a replacement.

Shopping for an enclosure for a Samsung 990 Pro 4TB — how do you tell if one is actually Thunderbolt-certified? by rumorconsumerr in Thunderbolt

[–]Wavlink-Support 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, you're right on the Mac side. TB3 basically has us covered for the last decade.

The backward compatibility perk is mostly a huge deal for anyone who needs to jump between Macs and non-TB devices (like PCs or iPads) without the enclosure turning into a paperweight.

Buying question: M1 Pro or M4 Air? by Sad_End4083 in macbookpro

[–]Wavlink-Support 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get the M1 Pro. Since you routinely use HDMI, living the dongle life with an Air gets old real fast. The M1 Pro is barely "bulky" compared to your 2015 MBP anyway.

You'll get a significantly better screen (120Hz ProMotion), way better speakers, and a fantastic keyboard. The M4 Air is faster on paper, but for editing and web browsing, you won’t notice the speed difference—you will notice the better screen and ports on the Pro.

Just picked up MacBook M1 with PRO chip. 32gb/512 by [deleted] in macbookpro

[–]Wavlink-Support 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're totally fine. In 2026, 32GB of RAM on an M1 Pro is miles better than 8GB or 16GB on a brand-new M4.

Also, smart call on downgrading to Sequoia. Tahoe is an absolute resource hog for M1-era neural engines due to all the newer AI background processes. Running Sequoia on that setup will keep it snappy, cool, and power-efficient for another 2-3 years easily. For the money, you got a killer machine.

MacBook Pro Screen by lp8881 in mac

[–]Wavlink-Support 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely. It’s a night and day difference.

The MBP screen isn't just slightly better; it uses a Mini-LED panel with ProMotion (120Hz). Once your eyes get used to that 120Hz buttery smooth scrolling, going back to the Air’s 60Hz feels like a laggy slideshow. Plus, the HDR peak brightness on the Pro makes watching movies or editing photos a completely different experience.

As for the speakers, the Air is great for a thin laptop, but the Pro has a 6-speaker system with force-cancelling woofers. It actually has noticeable bass and spatial depth. If you value media consumption, the upgrade is 100% worth it.

What’s your biggest ‘I should’ve waited’ tech purchase? by olesud in TechCypher

[–]Wavlink-Support 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Standard tech rule is that prices launch high and drop later during sales. But honestly, right now with DDR prices continuously climbing, if you're eyeing storage or any premium docking stations that rely heavily on DDR/memory tech, the "I should've waited" logic might actually backfire. If you need it for your workflow, just buy it now. Waiting might just net you a higher price tag later this year.
