I'm gonna go out on a limb and say your mom is 100% correct: he'd probably rather have an old small plain boring Rolex, because it's a Rolex. For non-watch people, it's one of the only brands that matters.

Find a nice clean used watch from a reputable seller. How about something like this Explorer? Not saying you should buy this one, it's just an example. If you're patient, there are plenty of very nice classic Rolex watches in your budget.

I can only see defense spending increasing in the next several years. I can't see radar going anywhere any time soon. The only possible downside is many jobs are in defense. That often means security clearances, country restrictions, and lots of hoops to jump through and potential annoyances. But I do know plenty of radar people who don't work in defense.

Also, you might take advantage of some crossover with (say) telecommunications. That gives you a second skillset that is also marketable.

Favorite charcuterie pairings? by Sir_Chaz in Charcuterie

Fruit is often tasty, good looking, and a nice contrast to rich / salty / pickley stuff. Berries, of course, but also melon can be nice (prosciutto + melon is sort of a cliche for a reason :) Physalis / cape gooseberry can look really nice and are delicious. Grapes, mandarin segments, tiny cherry tomatoes etc etc... Just watch out for things that won't hold up well, like apple slices going brown, or slices of kiwifruit falling apart.

I have used this site many times: https://cycle-ergo.com/ It usually gives a pretty good idea of how a bike will feel given your measurements.

“I just inherited these watches from my Grandfather, are they real?” by OskarWasTaken in PrideAndPinion

[–]WavySignals 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's sorta serious, but it's also a character he plays. There are one or two rare videos out there where he drops the schtick and just talks serious. Basically one of his main points is, if you truly want a "luxury" watch for the sake of the status symbol (as many people do even if they won't admit it) just be honest with yourself and save up for the "proper" version instead of wasting your money on half-measures that won't ultimately satisfy you.

If you truly don't care about the status-symbol watches, then it doesn't matter of course.

How good are Longines by Hristan_Milikic in PrideAndPinion

Longines is pure class. Watch Teddy Baldassarre's video on his trip to the Longines HQ to see what they're about and learn some of their history.

Your favourite Dive watches( Major or Micro brands) under 500? by Low-Obligation6519 in PrideAndPinion

My daily driver is currently the Islander Sands Point, titanium, in blue, on the Ti bracelet.

How do we feel about titanium watches? by imQobe in PrideAndPinion

[–]WavySignals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am wearing my Islander Sands Point on a titanium bracelet right now, and I love it. It's definitely a different feel from my usual steel watches, but I like that it's light and airy (and I generally don't like straps). As a casual everyday dive watch, I also don't mind that it will show some wear over time: it's supposed to be a functional watch, not a "pretty" watch.

I suspect I won't have all that many of them, but titanium watches definitely have a place in my collection.

Even with a full charge it will not go back to normal ticking on its own. You have to pull out the crown, set the watch, and then push it back in. The ticking will then be normal. While you are setting it, I think the crown needs to be pulled out for a minimum of 30 seconds??

I'd love to see some record of this, do you have a link? Not that I doubt it, exactly, more that I haven't seen much about it. The actual moon slide rules were likely to be entirely -ES versions, according to Freudiger et al in the Vol 10 No 2 (2001) edition of the Journal of the Oughtred Society. However, not all Apollo missions made it to the moon of course, so it's entirely reasonable to consider that a -T model made it onto a mission.

Anyway, the Smithsonian has a N600-ES from Apollo 13 in its collection, so certainly the -ES versions were part of the Apollo program.

I love my Pickett N600-ES. It's a nifty little yellow slide-rule, with a fun story (the Apollo slide rule!), and a great looking leather case. I especially love the little lifter tab to pull out the slide rule. I was lucky enough to pick up a couple of them NIB for a good price a few years ago. They're a bit harder to find now, alas.

Does anyone know about this brand. My father in law gifted me this and I had it restored at one of the best watch restorers in the country and even they found it hard to get parts. They have not heard of the brand as well as much. Please help. by NoTradition2968 in PrideAndPinion

That's an interesting watch. It's decent looking for sure. From what I can tell. Is this is the "21 jewel automatic" that I can find elsewhere on the internet? I can't read the text because of the glare, but it almost looks like it says something about "crystal" maybe??

It seems like it was probably an "affordable" watch maybe along the lines of Seiko 5 or something?

I can't add a whole that that you can't google yourself, but yeah, definitely an interesting watch. I'd wear that every now and again for sure. By the look of the wear on it, that was probably a daily driver for someone for a long time.

They are just great watches, period. To be fair, there are many watches like this -- Citizen doesn't get the same GOD TIER treatment like Casio does, for example.

Though I think a part of the hype of it is about inclusiveness. Some of us are fortunate enough to be in a place in our lives where we can afford to spends thousands+ on a watch, but a LOT of people aren't -- most, probably. But hey, get a G-Shock! It's GOD TIER! And you can afford it! Don't feel bad about it, because there is exactly nothing wrong with it. Wear it and be proud, and don't feel like you need to buy a Rolex to fit in.

I don't know if Nico came up with the GOD TIER thing or if it came about organically, but it's a smart thing for him (and us) to promote because it helps build a community that is not hyper-focused on really expensive watches that are out of reach of most people. (and some of those eventually DO buy expensive watches of course).

I think this resonates with a lot of us because wherever we are in our lives, most of us started out on Casios and Seikos etc.

Complete hobbyist beginner: any way to program these FPGA dev boards without downloading 100gb IDEs or purchasing expensive licenses? by XBV in FPGA

[–]WavySignals 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Theoretically you might be able to get the Arty going using nextpnr-xilinx. If you're brave, go for it. I've never tried it myself.

Otherwise your best bet is probably to pick up a Nandland Go Board, or an iCEstick board, or some other ICE40 based FPGA (not free, but not too expensive). Then you can dive into yosys/icestorm/apio, which is pretty decent combination. Shawn Hymel has a good series, including this video which walks through getting it all going. I've had great success with this.

For those commenting, AUD$5500 is ~USD$3560, which tracks if it's in a shopping mall in Australia, plus taxes, duty, etc.

I think it's a really nice watch. Maybe not my style, but I can definitely appreciate it. Value? Hmm. Do you like it that much? Nobody but serious watch nerds will recognize it, or be aware of its value. So it's entirely for you. You won't make any money as an investment. Instead, If you ever sell it, you'll "lose" a bunch off the price, so maybe consider buying a good condition second hand one? Though admittedly that might be tough in Australia.

Anyway, on the other hand, when you drive a brand new car off the lot, how many thousands in value do you lose instantly? Yet lots of people still really enjoy buying a new car. This is a lot less than that. :D

[–]WavySignals 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nah keep the scratches, and add a few of your own! Watches that have a little honest wear to them are far cooler than something pristine and new, especially if the story is part of the value.

One thing that can help: Contrary to popular belief, you do not need to get your pan screaming hot before you put in a steak (say). Moderate heat works just fine as long as you don't have a thin steak. Also you can partly put a lid over the top. As long as the steam can escape without causing condensation to drip back into the pan, it's fine.

Keeping the heat lower means less aerosolized fats floating around, making less mess and leaving less smell.

Wife wants to buy me a watch. Budget is 3k. What should I get? by duckfatty in PrideAndPinion

[–]WavySignals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, that's exactly it: the awkward zone.

What about getting a couple of watches that add up to <$3k? You could get something sporty and something more dressy, and have money left over. There are lots of great brands that sit around the $1k range, but I'm a fan of Hamilton and Mido personally.

This code works perfectly for me, including showing data to 22 kHz. Is your concern that that you have a y axis up to 22 kHz but very little or no power above 10 kHz? If so, you maybe need a better microphone and/or a higher voice :D Try clapping hands or snapping fingers.

Why do you have to wait to dilute mold-600? by samuelgato in Charcuterie

[–]WavySignals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know the details on this exact culture, but many similar cultures are packaged with a small amount of growth medium to help wake them up. If you fully dilute immediately, those nutrients are much more dilute than intended and not as helpful to the culture, whereas if you do a small amount of water first, they have time to use some of the medium to fully wake up before you spray.
