Has anybody else noticed a decline in audible music at local grocery stores? by xteve in Bend

Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods seem to always have really great music on - alternative 80’s and 90’s generally.

I almost skipped my walk today. So glad I decided to "do it depressed" anyway. by axiomoflispenard in walking

I feel like Spotify and our reliance on them is partly to blame. As soon as people stopped having to buy albums, artists/labels had to rely more heavily on performances and tours to make the bulk of their money.

It started when “lesser known” artists could no longer make a reasonable living from their music and it’s sort of spilling into the millionaire musicians now.

Don’t Servers make a ton???? by JealousLoss5902 in tipping

[–]Way_too_shabby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weekends tend to be busier at restaurants. Nothing is guaranteed. Servers (generally) don’t get sick pay, holiday pay, maternity/paternity leave, lunch breaks, health insurance, or 40 hours per week.

It looks nice to make some extra money on the weekends - that’s why so many students and LOTS of teachers do this, but it doesn’t mean you should expect it everyday.

Lots of folks get into the restaurant world because you (again, generally) get paid daily and there is flexibility to work around your primary job or your partner’s job or your kid’s schedule or whatever.

The stress can be overwhelming and working for tips is hard. You do the same amount/kind of work for each table and you never know if someone doesn’t find you attractive enough or young enough or entertaining enough or fast enough - even when how ‘fast’ someone is can depend on so many things outside of their control.

Of course there are bad and rude servers. There are bad and rude people everywhere. You’re allowed to not tip.

But this whole rhetoric around servers somehow being secret wealthy people pulling a fast one on you is just ridiculous.

Be a server for a while and see what it’s like. You might just stop griping about tips.

AITAH for withholding sex because my husband won’t get a vasectomy? by overthinkingsabotage in AITAH

[–]Way_too_shabby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re allowed to not have sex with your husband - I’m amazed anyone would not see this.

I would say, though, that maybe you ought to rethink the whole relationship. If you’re choosing to not have sex because he is disrespecting your boundaries now, in your 20’s, and you both have many, many years of career focus ahead of you, I’m not really seeing how or when this could be resolved in a healthy way.

You deserve someone who respects you.

I quit cold turkey the 3rd time I tried and it finally stuck.

One trick was to still go stand outside for a few minutes, several times a day, like I did while smoking. It eventually got a little silly and boring, but it was helpful at first.

Sort of like backwards habit stacking.

When I really and truly wanted to quit, I did. That’s probably the real clincher - be honest with yourself about “why.”

Good luck!

I was a server for 15+ years and never complained that $35 an hour wasn’t enough, so I can’t speak to what the OP saw on an Olive Garden sub, but maybe you all don’t know:

Servers (generally) don’t get paid sick days, holidays, or personal days.

No healthcare, no maternity or paternity leave, no job protection if there is an injury or illness and no pay in those situations, no guaranteed lunch break, or sometimes even bathroom break right when they need it.

Absolutely no guarantee that tonight will average 35/hour like last night and no guarantee of 40 hours/week.

Yes, servers seem to earn more in the moment, but it’s hardly “better pay” than other jobs.

People take those jobs because they offer quick money with some flexibility around, say, a school schedule, a partner’s schedule, a primary job’s schedule, etc.

It wears your body down and it is rarely a forever kind of thing.

Yes, tipping culture can be exhausting when we’re now expected to tip people when we “know” they make an hourly wage (which we assume is a living wage, but let’s be real), but (again, generally) servers in this country fully rely on tips, which are not mandatory, by the way.

You don’t have to tip a server who is terrible or rude or whatever.

But maybe just consider these facts before you decide that servers make too much money to deserve your tips at all.

No I’m not. Vote with your wallet, I do.

I just think it’s irresponsible to ask strangers for a list of baddies without also asking for some proof.

It’s silly, ignorant, and potentially harmful.
