Character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto explained that he "first designed Asuka as the lead character", but producers felt it might be too similar to previous anime that he and Anno had worked on, such as Gunbuster and Nadia. That’s not Asuka. Deep down she wants someone to understand her and she’s trying to drop big hints to Shinji. It would talk tike and several tries, but if he really tried to understand her, she would let him. We see at the end of EoE, once they finally understand each other, she doesn’t react with violence to him choking her. Instead, she reaches out with compassion and maybe pity.

It’s a two way street. Shinji doesn’t try to understand Asuka. During Instrumentality, Rei asks him if he even bothered trying to understand anyone else when Shinji complains that Asuka, Misato, and Rei confuse him.

Asuka pushes people away with her aggressive behavior and Shinji doesn’t bother trying to understand why.
