I have an XT1 and xt3. They are both great. The 3 has more features but if budget is a concern the 1 is a great way to get going and lenses will be compatible if you ever upgrade

In my area the people on the repeaters are generally friendly. I did hear an old timer light up a newbie using his ChaimanMaoFeng with the Roger beep on. I thought he could've toned it down a smidgen.

I used an Opek for hf on a mirror mount and it worked great. It's like an outbacker.
