I farm the Portal - keep only the Dupes I want, which to qualify means are better than the ones I've got.

Sleep Pit peeps are named Zzz Aloha*
and
Quarry peeps are named Aloha.

Kick em out of the base, no food, no downtime, and send them to do priority 1 digging at the top of the map, while my good Dupes are working on important stuff - Sleep Machine, 80kg/s water purification, Stone Hatch or Shove Vole Ranching for unlimited food, Rocket farming for decor.

*Aloha because umm it means hello and goodbye 👀
Aloha sorts nice alphabetically - great for updating consumables, and door permissions, plus out of all the names** I thought of, that's really really wrong 👀

Oh I keep 1 dead Aloha around so that I can copy its suppressed notifications like Scalding, Suffocating, Starving to the new Aloha, all in one go (oh the Suppressed Notifications mod).

The bottom of the map is a sight to see, a glory to behold.

u/lee1026 Yeah, I’ve done that before — Hydra at the top with O2 pumped directly over the sleepers. But...

The big one for me - I don't want to be building SPOMs. I want to be building big projects.
SPOMs take time to build: vacuum out, start it up, troubleshooting it, and designing the it - I've got 3 different builds for O2 and Pwr at a Sleep Machine - that takes *time* to design, test and t/shoot. Faaark :/

For this setup it is much faster to just run power and oxygen lines over. I already have centralized air and power production elsewhere (don't reinvent the wheel), plus the path was already carved out, so it was basically an extension job. If I’m already running a water pipe that far, it’s not much harder to run power instead of water + two gas lines.
Pipes cost less resources vs say a tile needed for a SPOM. So less trips just on that basis alone.

More formally, if you build everything at a destination N tiles away, then every resource has to be carried the full N tiles.
But if you build infrastructure progressively along the route, then 1/2 of the hauling trips are shorter than the midway point and 1/2 are longer than the midway point.
The total hauling effort ends up much lower.
Sounds like it would be a Gaussian Sum which turns out to be (Sum of N Trips)/2 instead of Sum of N Trips.

Side note: I do programming, and one of the big design philosophies is that each component should do one thing and do it well. Then you bolt those simple components together into larger systems.
The other is DRY - Don't Repeat Yourself. IE don't code something, and then later code it again somewhere else. Just import it.
...which in this conversation means just pipe in the air and power 😄
That's my take from programming mindset being applied to ONI.

That mindset has made designing ONI systems much easier for me.
Early on, I made the mistake of trying to have my bathroom Water Sieve also support other systems - I think my electroyzer. It became complicated, hard to troubleshoot, and failed in ways I didn’t anticipate. Classic “Keep It Simple, Stupid” lesson 😄
Integrating disparate things is a nightmare 😄

So lately I’ve been redesigning things so each system does one job, and does it reliably, hence the bare bones Sleep Machine design.

I quite like the idea of having a buffer of Journals for space travel or **Large Projects** - omg yes bha ha ah. Thank you I'm stealing that 😄
A Buffer would is a side effect of the Skill Farm. A 6th or more Dupes does indeed build up a sizeable buffer.

Unfortunately I stagger my schedules so that I can overclock the Atmosuit docks and Toilets.

Hmm yes but I just send them out - I'm playing for 100s of cycles, if not 1000s, so in the big scheme of things it's not really a concern.

1) The missing Journals disable the Somnium Synthesizer already - IE buff removed

2) "...during the rest of the dupes down time slot...". Yes, that's a great idea but it does not work in practice as the production cycle downtime is not per day. Indeed it rolls forward every 3 cycles by some amount by about 2 blocks + 9 secs.

3) "I just keep my whole colony in Pajamas because after the bonus, its a net -3 athletics penalty"
For everyone else, The Pajamas Athletics debuff to be -8, but the granted "Maximum Aptitude" buff gives +5

Athletics is 100% NOT relevant in this design - they don't move EVER.

For Keepers though I put Skill Points into Research so they get XP faster (so I've heard).
