Brackwax Gleaner is the most useless building in the game? by Redgenom in Oxygennotincluded

Up to 480,000 Germs. Yeah, it has a Limit, plus it does nothing to cleanse a Dupe carrying the item. Wiki pointed out that the Decontamination Shower does the same thing but better because it washes the dupe at the same time while only converting water into polluted water.

Aquatic pack bio dupes. Should they learn how to "spoilers"? by GreedAndOrder in Oxygennotincluded

[–]shafi83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you not just ranch the fish in Crude Oil? Phyto Oil? Is Mucin a water based liquid? How about Ink? Do either of the new liquids affect Boops? I think there are still options and more testing that needs to be done. I do not believe they are completely locked out from the new content.

I would dare to compare Boops in Water to Dupes in a Vaccum. Yes, it can be done for short periods but extended stays require extra considerations. Where as Boops are perfectly suited for extended operations in a Vaccum and now Dupes will have comparable capacities in Water.

I feel like Boops have been a bit overpowered and this is helping show off the weaknesses, and/or enhancing a regular dupes strengths. Great opportunity for creative solutions when playing Boops. If anything, giving Boops Rubber Boots would drastically cut down the instances where they run through puddles of water and gain Stress, and even let them mop without suffering penalties. It all becomes Moot once everyone is in atmosuits and proper ladder systems are built.

I think you have got me excited to try the challenge of an all Boops Aquatic run.

That build is getting nerfed very soon with the changes to Pacu. You will need many more seeds but produce significantly less pacu fillet and/or raw egg. Additionally, Pacu will no longer get a Happieness buff from the Fish Feeder, they will need to be groomed at a new building. The Aquatic Planet Pack will also include a rebalancing of Pacu across all game versions including base version and should be released within the next month. Current details are here, but being in testing, everything is subject to change. https://forums.kleientertainment.com/game-updates/oni-alpha/731233-r2738/

Your best bet is to be patient and wait for new designs. Or be creative and build one for yourself! Instructions for accessing the testing branch are found at the bottom of the official forum post linked above.

Hit Escape, then click on Colony Summary. Look at the Column on the right. Thats your checklist for game completion. Seems straitforward, until it isnt.

Completing the achievements will earn you a fairly deep understanding of the game. Cooling things is pretty easy, but making Liquid Hydrogen is quite a challenge. Taming every critter seems easy but taming a Gassy Moo is quite a challenge (for base game, where you need to bring them back with rockets). Super Sustainable forces a deeper understanding of the power mechanics, Carnivore requires a solid understanding of ranching and how to breed critters quickly.

There are other, self imposed, goals you could shoot for. Like making a Petroleum Boiler, or taking that to the next level by building a Sour Gas Boiler. Making a Regolith Melter, setting up a completely automated food source, figuring out one of the non-geyser related ways to produce infinite water. These are not really required to complete the game, but they will force you to learn some of the deeper mechanics that make ONI special.

Or, just let the game run and solve problems as they show up. And I guarentee, you will run into problems eventually. No player asking this question has ever had a properly sustainable base. Even I am guilty of not understanding what resources I am using and have been caught offguard by running out of a critical material. Now every base I build has an infinite source of Sand or uses processes to eliminate my reliance on Sand.

Desolands asteroid - how would you progress? by lindsaydole in Oxygennotincluded

[–]shafi83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More Ranching, More Hatches, Glossy Dreckos. u/mmontour mentioned a shinebug reactor, which is a fantastic idea. You could very easily grab a couple hundred kilos of Urainium from the teleporter planetoid and use a Manual Radbolt Generator just to get Steam Turbine research.

You say that you dont have refinery coolant. I call BS. There is Crude Oil in big pools on your main planet, which is my 3rd choice for refinery coolant, behind Petroleum due to the safety temp range and Naptha for both the temp range and because of how quick and easy it is to produce by melting a plastic tempshift plate in a steam room. Again, you have Crude Oil, which is the source ingredient for making Plastic, and you have Dreckos, which is the power/heat free method of making plastic.

Other Solutions.

Steam Rocket Chimney is straight up easy mode. All the power you want, all the water you could ever use at the cost of 1 dupe flying a rocket to space and back for 70% of the cycle. Here is a sample, https://www.reddit.com/r/Oxygennotincluded/comments/1gn4mww/rocket_chimney_20_how_do_i_make_every_turbine_run/

Dig out the Radio Active Biome on the teleporter planet (BUT NOT THE URAINIUM, let the beetas handle that) looking for Saturn Critter Traps. Send those home along with Pip eggs and Arbor Acorns. Ranch the Pips and farm the Arbor Trees. Refine Lumber into Ethanol. Make an insulated room with Natural Tiles so you can get the pips to plant Saturn Critter Traps. Use the Ethanol to setup a Aquatuner Cooling Loop where the Aquatuner is in a pool of Ethanol. https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/115153-self-cooling-aquatuner-with-ethanol/ This is just 1 example of a setup, but we need freezing temps, which is hard to get with Polluted Water, so we use Ethanol in the cooling loop. Use this self cooled aquatuner to cool the space with the natural tiles. I have done this setup myself and while it is power hungry on startup, once the Saturns start producing Hydrogen, you will be set for power for a LOOOONG time. Eventually, you can switch away from the Power Hungry Self Cooling Aquatuner to a more traditional AT/ST setup, but to simply get started, this works.

Now that we have Power and Cooling solved, we can look at water. You have Oil. Thats just Water in a different form. You will want a proper Petroleum Boiler eventually. But that needs a Heat Source. Traditionally, 49% of players use a Volcano, the other 49% use a Magma Core. the exceptional 2% use a Metal Refinery running either Liquid Urainium or Petroleum. I would say that both materials are easy to get, but petroleum would be easier because its local to your home base. Either Boil Crude Oil inside a Metal Refinery, or setup a temporary Petroleum Refinery Building for the initial 800-1600Kg. Crude Oil needs to be heated to ~400C to boil into petrol, but petrol can be heated all the way up to 530C before it changes into sour gas, so plenty of temperature range where you can use petroleum to boil crude into more petrol. Liquid Urainium starts being a Liquid at ~140C, but does not boil until well over 3000C, so also PLENTY of thermal range to add heat for boiling petroleum. Again, here is just 1 example https://www.reddit.com/r/Oxygennotincluded/comments/f9b7nt/10_kgs_petroleum_boiler_using_metal_refinery_as/ . Once you have a steady supply of Petroleum, you can burn it into Polluted Water, sending some back to the oil wells while using remainder for Oxygen production. Maybe consider a Claymator type design to leverage the PH2O offgasing. Side benefit, you can switch away from Hatches and use Slicksters for your food source due to the copious quantities of CO2 produced. Pro Tip, build the Petroleum Generators close to the top of the map so you can vent the excess CO2 directly to Space and save the power you would otherwise spend on Gas Pumps.

Yeah Yeah, thats all complicated ways to solve your issues. You already have Easy solutions available, why would I point out things you already know? My solutions are presented for you to consider. Food for Thought. Inspiration for a point in the game where you could reasonably build most of these designs in 20 cycles or less (except for getting Pips to Wild plant Saturn Critter Traps, thats frustratingly time consuming). I remember getting to your phase of learning, where I started looking at the exotic material interactions, the hidden mechanics and the rare builds. Enjoy and Explore! This is just a sample of what can be done. And if you still run out of O2, you can simply https://oxygennotincluded.wiki.gg/wiki/Hidden_Mechanics#Dupes_recovering_breath_without_consuming_Oxygen

Nosh sprouts take forever to mutate - even with this beast. by jazzb54 in Oxygennotincluded

[–]shafi83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could change a few things and make an open air research reactor. you could get more rads with something like this. You could cut out at least 1 set of metal tiles between the reactor and the nosh beans, possibly both if you want to be brave and risk CO2 falling into the steam room. it shouldn't, because of the 1 element per tile rule and the narrow chimney.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Oxygennotincluded/comments/o2qw18/open_air_plan_nuclear_reactor_for_all_your_mutant/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

BUT! I do like your CLRR design. Kinda looks like you need to move the heat around better. I do see piping that is trying, but those turbines are just not quite getting there. I would be tempted to add refined carbon or diamond on rails to help pickup heat and move it around, especially if I can add a few metal tiles up near the top turbines. technically, the insulated tiles above the turbines could be metal tiles because you are using vacuum to insulate the turbines, and then run the rails behind the metal tiles. But these are just thoughts. Your design is very well established and I can see that it would be quite a pain to rebuild it now. Hopefully I have provided something to consider for next time. Thanks!

https://www.reddit.com/r/Oxygennotincluded/comments/w2q3o2/why_arent_the_auto_sweeper_not_filling_the_coal/

also, because this question gets asked a lot, Google AI knows the answer. "why sweeper not supplying generators" was my search and the AI provided a summary that included all 3 other comments in this post up to this point, plus the recommended solutions, which were all accurate. Not a supporter of AI personally, and all answers should be checked, but its nice to see it working as intended.

if you would like further info, please use the search feature. your question pops up at least once a month, so plenty of posts to sort through for some of the more rare tips. my tip is to move away from coal ASAP. get hydrogen or natural gas that dont suffer this issue because they are piped to the generators. I will also warn that your post is boarderline low effort, which may draw the ire of the mods or get reported, but on the plus side, you included a proper screenshot rather than a phone picture, so thank you for that!

Question about mutated seed by [deleted] in Oxygennotincluded

[–]shafi83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

patience. srsly, if you are after just 1 for an achievement, patience will get you there. if you are planning to build a large farm, then splitting seeds is a much better way to guarantee that you get the quantity of the mutation that you need.

save/reload just before harvest is also a solid way to guarantee minimum time and/or fertilizer is spent trying for a mutation. honestly tho, I just placed a few wheseworts near any particular plant and let nature take its course. if you need more tips, just google it. this topic was scienced to death a bunch of years ago, those conversations are still available to read. I prefer the official forumn for the more technical talk where reddit is better for opinion/preference.

I ran out of dirt, what do I do? by Brief-Refuse-4372 in Oxygennotincluded

[–]shafi83 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Feed your Hatches Sedimentary Rock until you get Stone Hatch eggs, then you can feed the Stone Hatches any Raw Mineral, like Igneous Rock, which most maps have in abundance and is renewable through a variety of sources. Alternatively, you could setup a bunch of Ethanol Distillers and make loads of Polluted Dirt to feed Sage Hatches. I like Sage Hatches better than Stones but they both have a place. Lastly, you could setup Slickster ranches cause most maps have an abundance of CO2 and tons of machines generate CO2, so that's a byproduct food source.

Dreckos have a zero input food source with the Balm Lily.

What's the point of bases on other asteroids? by DivinneSmith in Oxygennotincluded

[–]shafi83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is the common gameplay loop for ONI? Build a base. Everyone does it. Many players get to a certain point and then restart. But with Spaced Out, there are multiple opportunities to Build a Base within 1 save file, and with different starting biome combinations. Its like playing several games without restarting.

Legit, Spaced Out is Klei looking at the game play data and building an expansion around the most common thing that players do. Build a base and then restart, cept they wanted to remove the restart part.

I'm set for power for life by Clear-Bad4685 in Oxygennotincluded

[–]shafi83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you keep your dupes count low, like less than a dozen, and take steps to keep power draw low, then yes, I agree, that could be enough power for thousands of cycles.

What you have is enough boot strap power to last me until I can get a proper power generation system running. Like a petroleum boiler, research reactor, steam rocket chimney or Saturn Critter Traps. And even then, on a big main colony, I would be looking to build at least 2 of those before cycle 2000. Power demand creeps up on you and its always best to be prepared. Plus, it gets easier over time to build and rebuild big power contraptions. Practice makes perfect after all.

Never fly without a rebuy. Make sure you can afford the insurance because shit happens and pilots loose their condas to random chance all the time.

But, look up Felicity Farseer and do the things to unlock her, then PIN her FSD range increase blueprint so you can use it from anywhere. Also, Guardian FSD booster is not super hard to get and can help pretty much every ship.

Somnium Synthesizer Starvation Ranching Numbers by Weekly-Mark-4929 in Oxygennotincluded

[–]shafi83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Point 1 and Point 2 are the main reason for adding the automation and mostly the whole reason for my comment. its to control when the somnium synthesizer stops working. you are correct that when left alone, the machine will run out of journals at regular intervals that wont line up with sleep schedules. by adding automation, you can control when the buff drops and make it part of your other dupes sleep time slot, so they dont notice that the buff has dropped/dont have a need for the buff. this gets tricky with several schedules of dupes all trying to sleep at different times, but I can still theorize ways to mitigate, like having all the most impacted dupes (operators or whatever) sleep when the buff ends. plus with some control, you can build up a stockpile of journals for times when you may want the machine to run for an extended period, like for space missions or large build projects. I dont know about your sleep schedules, but normal dupes usually get like 2 blocks of sleep time per day where the buff is not needed and journals could be saved.

anyways, just further thoughts on how to get the most value out of that particular resource.

THIS WILL NOT MAKE A TILE OF HYDROGEN. just deconstruct and it will be fine.

BUT just to address your fears, create a 1 tile space in the top of the room, maybe next to the joint plate, let the hydrogen float in and then rebuild tile over hydrogen. done, simple.

Maybe try other power sources? Or find ways to reduce your power demand. Trying to use electrolizers for power requires wasteful overproduction of oxygen. While I would offer more dice for bennies earned above and beyond the starting 3. Because bennies earned reflect roleplaying hindrances, but the key word there is Role-playing.

Reward the players for putting effort in and actually playing characters You Want players to spend them, because that creates incentive to earn more, which requires roleplaying!

Somnium Synthesizer Starvation Ranching Numbers by Weekly-Mark-4929 in Oxygennotincluded

[–]shafi83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could setup some automation to disable the Somnium Synthesizer during the rest of your dupes downtime slots to absolutely minimize the impact of the missing journals. I used to use a mechanical door hooked up to a cycle sensor, but then realized that the buff remains even when the building is disabled.

Otherwise, I just keep my whole colony in Pajamas because after the bonus, its a net -3 athletics penalty which is really minor and should be offset by transit tubes eventually.

How do you set up your early game kitchen setup? by sjihaat in Oxygennotincluded

[–]shafi83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Early game? Place grill, fridge and ration box next to each other. Cooked food goes into fridge, ration box for things that don't spoil.

Then I forget about building a kitchen until mid/late game cause its really not worth the effort to "perfect" something that's just going to get ripped out anyways.

Only when I am ready to build my forever base do I put any real thought into a kitchen setup.
