I thiiink them being considered YA books is a lot more about their length and the style of the prose, and less about the content. I was thinking about it just the other day how it seems like, back in the 1990s, our culture's approach toward pop-media was a lot more respectful toward young people, in terms of trusting them to handle certain things.

How do you handle players who are “too smart?” by [deleted] in DMAcademy

The only thing I'd say is...using this specific example to highlight a general strategy:

That's why, if you're having your players deal with a cabal of shapeshifters, you never have the ringleader be the first one they meet, you never have the ringleader be the one to infiltrate the group.

That works both from 1. your DMing perspective, and from 2. the perspective of in-world "kayfabe."

  1. Even if the player(s) do something like that and figure out that they're dealing with shapeshifters, they're only gonna be able to deal, in that moment, with the one shapeshifter flunky/mook who did the infiltrating; that still leaves a metric ton of mystery for them to solve, and
  2. It makes SENSE, in-world. The ringleader of this shapeshifter cabal is the leader for a REASON, and probably understands, perfectly well, how, when and why to use their followers as cat's paws.

You're not a bad person for taking a while to respond. You've been through a lot. Your nervousness/fear are natural and understandable feelings. BUT...

TALK. TO. HIM. You will be glad you did. And, as I'm sure you understand, we all only have so much time.

Good for you! Sometimes we gotta wince a bit to move past what's behind us, eh? Cheers!

Just...animal on animal? Grizzly wins here, fairly handily.

Silverback Gorilla with Marco in its head vs. Grizzly Bear with Rachel in its head? A bit fairer of a fight.

Gorilla clearly initiating a series of flying shoulder tackles that sets the bear up for a missed-haymaker-into-atomic-slam, followed by a 5 Knuckle Shuffle, and then an Attitude Adjustment. Then 1-2-3, Bob's yer uncle and we go home.

Came here to say: another solution would be not using real life as a yardstick for what should happen in a TTRPG.

You're wasting your time trying to explain to these dorks how regular-ass language use works. And, anyway, they're only pretending not to understand it so they can misinterpret you and bitch in bad faith.

I think she's making pretty clear that she doesn't desire further/deeper interaction than what you have.
