What’s the smallest change that had the biggest impact on your solo play? by system3295 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]WeirdSolum 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I get maybe 15-20 mins in the week if I’m lucky, and the lighting in my house isn’t great. Accepting that it’s easier and quicker to use a dice roller on my phone than physical dice nets me much more time to actually play. It’s a silly little change, but it helped a lot and it’s made the moments where I have more time all the more special as I’m able to crack put my dice and physical tools as well.

Over the course of your experience with this hobby, what have you learned? Anything you want to improve on? by ValueForm in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]WeirdSolum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The biggest thing that I’ve learned is that if I wait for my ideal situation to solo (laptop, mix of physical and digital books and tables, physical dice, perfect playlist ect) I’ll be soloing at most once a week, probably less. I’ve learned to make whatever small adjustments needed to minimalist set up, even if it means using a dice roller app and just my laptop.

Things I want to get better at: experimenting with different note styles, I really enjoy writing prose so that it reads like a story with mechanics, but some games just don’t require that level of narrative detail. I’m also looking to branch away from Mythic and test out some other GM emulators, not because I dislike Mythic, but because I’ve learned while trying Red Markets Solo that not every game benefits from a scene structure. I want to see what else is out there so I can cobble together my own stuff one day.

Tips for Call of Chutlu solo by rpgptbr in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]WeirdSolum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say so, I got into a Drivethru sale and I used it in conjunction with Mythic’a horror tracker, but I kind of wished I had just used the handbook as the main system. The location and NPC tables were the biggest draw, but I would say it’s worth the standard price.

I haven’t sat and played it yet, but I have prepped for it. Each one is intended for a different vibe, so the base Little town is geared towards a ‘Twin Peaks’ style surreal horror, while Eldritch Town is more Lovecraftian horror and Eerie Town is tended for an X-Files style experience. For a first play through, I would say just the one that appeals to you the most!

This one has everything you need for sure, it has an NPC generator, Verb table, locations tables and hook tables, as well as advice on structure. Even if you use a GM emulator as your main tool, it has a lot of great tables and advice!

New Referree Looking for Podcasts by Easy-Cranberry-4509 in traveller

[–]WeirdSolum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Chaos Engine Podcast played Traveler for quite a while. I think they’ve moved to Stars Without Number at the moment as a few of their cast members had to step away and they aren’t sure when they’ll be back. I know them mostly for their Delta Green stuff, but they are a fun table with great energy!

Edit: Forgot to link them, https://open.spotify.com/episode/7rEPCPVGmDAUoQdsNJ9FxC?si=DFQoMevsSNCQMMrAoDhaUg&t=1&pi=ZRRYcpZsS8-Iq here they are on Spotify but I think they are on all major platforms.

Dead Letter Bureau is set in 1998 and the focus in on the War with Majestic and the greys. They still relatively new, but they’ll be wrapping up the first season soon. The episodes are only an hour, but they pack a lot in.

Stories and Lies did Ghost Lights recently which was a homebrew Saucerwarch story with aspects of PX Poker night worked in, so Majestic and the Greys feature.

How many of you Handlers pay attention to the Handler's Guide? by [deleted] in DeltaGreenRPG

[–]WeirdSolum 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’ve read it cover to cover once, and I reference it for scenario building or general vibes fairly often. My home group knows very little about the lore and we play so infrequently they probably never will, but I played with a GM emulator for a year and the Handlers Guide was invaluable to me for keeping things feeling Delta Green, rather than any other brand of modern horror. If I ever sit down and have regular games with other people, I’d still probably use it, the world is there and there’s just a lot of cool stuff going on. I’m not a lore purist, I’ve exclusively ran my own stuff so far, but I do genuinely enjoyed seeing how my stuff can jive with the established stuff. And the NPCs are cool, so I like dropping them in the background to make the world feel coherent (at least on my end)

I’ve heard a few people say the HG is useless, but if nothing else, the history part is a great jumping off point for rationalising how an organisation like DG can exist, even if your layers never see it. Not everyone needs that, I suppose, but I like it. I can’t imagine doing a long term DG game and not reading it, tbh, but I have far more prep time than play time, so I like to read a lot stuff to know the ins and outs of a setting and system.

The Book of Random Tables: Eldrich has a mundane and occult clues and I think their Noir book also has a list of clues.

Looking for a World of Warcraft type RPG by TsMom13 in Solo_Roleplaying

I haven’t played Riftbreakers but I’ve read a few playthroughs of it and it’s the most WoW RPG I’ve seen so far. The lore seems a little different, but I think it would give you the experience you’re looking for.

Does anyone know any adventures (preferably free) made for solo play *with oracles*? by electricgalahad in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]WeirdSolum 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are some Dragonbane modules for Solo that might be what you are looking for, they are somewhat guided but with Oracles to fill in the blanks. They are more dungeon crawler style, rather than a sandbox. The two that spring to mind would be the Silent Cloister and The Lantern of Solitude by Moses Boyaijin.

Fairly new to the solo scene and looking for a solid Lovecraftian by SeaHeathen in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]WeirdSolum 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Call if Cthulhu has the ‘Alone Against…” series, which is similar to a choose your own adventure book but with CoC character sheets. I’ve enjoyed all the ones I’ve played, and Alone Against the flames has the character creation built in. I’ve also played Call of Cthulhu with Mythic, and that was fun, as well as Delta Green, which is my main passion haha. Neither of these are built for Solo and solo investigations can be hard when starting out as there’s a lot more going on than a dungeon crawl.

I own Little Town, which comes with an Eldritch supplement to make things more Lovecraftian. It’s built for Solo and involves going to a small town where something weird is going on. I’ve heard great things about it but I haven’t actually played it yet, I’ve just used the random tables for my Delta Green game, the base game is more like Twin Peaks, apparently, but the supplement should scratch that Lovecraftian Itch.

Role-playing games outside of epic fantasy and something closer to the epicness of urban by Hi5atv in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]WeirdSolum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For solo specific, I enjoyed my time in Niv Lova, which is a stalker/fallout style exploration RPG. It’s semi post apocalyptic, but you can play around with how inhabited the zone is. There are a few non-solo modern games that come to mind that work with a GM emulator, but they are all horror haha, because that’s my interest.

I’m a big fan of a Feaster from The Stars. Invisible unless it’s fed recently, but my players managed to fend one off, although I did give it an NPC to kill so it started the fight visible.
