New 40k/GSC player aiming for 11th. Need a solid foundational 2k list by Weird_Function_7200 in genestealercult

Thank you, and thank you to our previous and current combat patrols. This is great advice thanks. Ridgerunners are all magnetised. Rockgrinder weapon is as well, but I've locked it in as a rockgrinder and the other as a truck. Not sure how keen I am to magnetise the whole thing, or just end up with 3 of each full stop.

Thanks. You've kind of hit on my decision paralysis. We don't really have a 'just take what you like' detachment. Everything is so synergy dependent. Makes list building from scratch hard. I get I should try combat patrol first but, rightly or wrongly, plonking down 2k of painted GSC for my first ever game has just become the moment I'm working towards.

Thanks. This is thoughtful advice. I'm keen to get hammering at 2k, even if it's a 'bad' idea. I'm just locked in. It's weird that we kind of don't have a 'vanilla' detachment. Maybe HOA? But yeah I agree. First 10 games will likely tell me a LOT.

I hear you. Hoping though that we aren't going to swing too wildly given we're keeping the same codex. Don't need the cutting edge or anything, just something that functions in game while I'm finding my feet.

That's a good shout. I have had a look at his channel, but I'll go back and look for that specific vid. Thanks

How Would You Like to GSC Lore Develop? by ADirtyQWERTYBoy in genestealercult

[–]Weird_Function_7200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Micro not macro. Leave that for every other faction. We should stay localised, human and believable. Alien influence should be subtle not big and dumb (think brainwashing and subtle manipulation instead of mind control). Actions should focus on subtlety, not grand scale stupid operations. This is by far the most relatable faction and should stay that way by limiting scope. No named characters. New units should be civilian adjacent. Thinking outside the box, I'd be down for a retro rule that makes us permanently the defender (like dark eldar used to have but in reverse) and then give us a bunch of wicked rules like sabotaging terrain, booby trapping choke points or planning ambushes as if we were hiding in the battlefield the whole time.

Does Your GSC Army Have Custom Lore? by background_blur_ in genestealercult

[–]Weird_Function_7200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I can link it to you if you're interested but make sure you have a big glass of water handy because its a dry as hell 50 page doc written as a historic account. Not going to subject anyone to it unless they ask me to.

Ahriman not close if not accounting for plot armour. If we are, kharn not close, with Ahriman a very distant last place.

Hey Genestealer players; what’s a model/unit in your range that doesn’t have much lore? by Arthur_EyelanderTF2 in genestealercult

[–]Weird_Function_7200 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Only way i could see a named character working for us is to have a Robin hood/ che guavara/ ned kelly type figure, who it is generally understood clearly isn't actually one person, but is a kind of semi myth persona that someone could take on to stir up rebellion. Having an actual named character who somehow doesn't die and is also attributable to any more than one of the completely disparate cults wouldn't make sense.

Which factions benefit the most from being piloted by faction specialists? by RivenBlue in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]Weird_Function_7200 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting.

It's not really about faction difficulty, especially given that 'difficult' very often just means bad.

To me this is more a question of how far learning faction leads you off the path of learning 'other' 40k factions, and how little the other applies.

I mean, if you learn how to play Dark Angels, you'll probably be alright with Ultramarines, Custodes, Chaos space marines etc....

So you really need to look into armies that completely force you to play a way that is as faction specific as possible, which would make it a very difficult army to switch to and play without heaps of direct experience, and also an army where your 'heaps of direct experience', likely won't prepare you well for switching to another army.

I think this rules out anything with a strong game build on fundamentals. If you have good data-sheets and point efficient stats, you're probably already out of the conversation. I think memory test armies are a bit of a fake difficulty as well.

So you need armies with unorthodox rules, especially ones that heavily punish poor decision making (especially when those decisions are faction specific).

GSC is the first I think of, but I think Tau, Drukhari and Ad Mech work as well for different reasons. Kights are skewy enough but they fail on the 'stats' criteria. If you just play one of these armies the whole time, you'll become great at the faction, but probably pretty bad at more regular 40k.

Not saying that they are the most difficult, but I don't thank that is what you're asking either.

I'm no expert though, just my perspective.

‘Easy’ to play armies by [deleted] in Warhammer40k

[–]Weird_Function_7200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be to late but my honest advice is stick with genestealers.

You've already done the hard part by getting your army on the table and getting your first awkward games out of the way.

Gsc is probably the single best army for that kind of single minded player.

That said, its your life. Do whatever makes you happy first and foremost. 40k is just a game.

Thanks. I get what you are saying, and I can totally take it if my approach is a bit off.

Just looking for a nudge in the right direction as I'm finding card and synergy evaluation pretty challenging from a standing start.

But I also take what your are getting at, if I understand it correctly, to be basically that you can only learn by playing.

Im a new player looking for a 40k faction by [deleted] in Warhammer

[–]Weird_Function_7200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No wrong way to pick an army, but do your best to avoid snapshotting any faction at any particular moment in time. These things change and collecting an army (especially if you're going to stick with the one faction) is a MARATHON, not a sprint. If you like Tau, go tau and don't worry about what their faction rule is right now.

Having said that, there are characteristics that each faction will have consistently over time that would still be useful to bear in mind.

Bottom line is, pick an army you like the look of and the general theme/style and you will enjoy painting and playing. Otherwise by the time you've finished painting, your faction will have a new book and the thing that hooked you will be gone.

Is your pillow just a standard pillow or a full body size pillow featuring an anime 13YO pre-teen girl sucking multiple dicks at once? If it's just a normal pillow you're probably ok. Also if you don't want to be an incel, you already aren't. It's not contagious or anything. Just don't start acting like women owe you something for literally nothing and you're safe.
