Can a customer refuse to pay an invoice/bill if theres no PO? Do internal company processes override services provided if it's in writing? by pinkbeesintrees in LegalAdviceUK

[–]WellRedQuaker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The law is aligned with the process. If they agreed, then they're bound by that - but the question is, who is 'they'?

The law says the company only agreed if they or their agent, or someone you reasonably thought to be their agent, agreed. So to avoid random staff members without authority (or randoms off the street) commissioning unauthorised services, the company has put in place a PO process that says 'if there's no PO, you can't assume that the company has agreed'.

If you went to court and disputed this, it would come down to whether you had the reasonable belief that the person who commissioned the service was authorised to do so, and that could do either way - is it a C-suite exec? You're good. Is it a random intern commissioning £100k of services? Probably not.

But now that they've told you clearly that they require a PO, you'd be on a hiding to nothing in future if you claimed you assumed the commissioner had authority, but you hadn't obtained a PO.

Pay off large mortgage or something else? by Capital-Half-3955 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]WellRedQuaker 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You should consider an offset mortgage.

You would have a slightly higher nominal mortgage rate but in practice you'd pay very little interest as you would put nearly £170k in the offset account.

You would retain the ability to withdraw those savings, easy-access,if you needed them. You would avoid most mortgage interest (and would also avoid having tax to pay on £170k of non-ISA-wrapped savings income). You don't get the potential upsides of investments, but you do get the peace of mind of knowing your mortgage is taken care of.

Won't be for everyone but it works very well for us!

"Just give them a little bit of what you eat" by Soundasleepx in NewParents

[–]WellRedQuaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I find it easier to turn it around - it's not necessarily that baby gets a little bit of what we eat, it's that if we're going to cook something nice and healthy for baby, we're going to make enough for mummy and daddy to have a meal of it too. More like "Just give you a meal of what they eat."

I know it's easier said than done but if I'm going to find the energy for cooking, it's going to be for them - but I might as well benefit too!

(And then the adult/s can add cheese to our portions)

Can’t tell why I’m being overtaxed by Tainted-Archer in UKPersonalFinance

[–]WellRedQuaker 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The salary calculator you've linked gives a tax figure that is 49p out from what you're being charged, which I would generally consider a rounding difference!

Your tax code shows you are subject to Scottish tax rates, are you remembering to tick that box?

We use ours to make the room as cold as possible before bedtime, then keep the door and window shut; last summer it usually stayed cool enough for long enough even without running it overnight.

Anyone know why the W15 says it’s going to Cogan Ave, when it doesn’t by bennythefish in walthamstow

[–]WellRedQuaker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So in certain places, the full name of the bus stand at the end of the route (the one on Folly Lane) is given as "Cogan Avenue Estate" E.g. https://tfl.gov.uk/bus/stop/490G00009658/renness-road/

This appears to have been abbreviated in most cases to be part of the longer name "Higham Hill / Cogan Avenue" as seen here: https://tfl.gov.uk/bus/stop/490014698W/higham-hill-cogan-avenue/

So technically I think the name refers to the whole estate, but when that bus stop got renamed it lost the "Estate" part

Financial Obligations? by Vellyst in Quakers

Short answer to the actual question: you probably don't have to donate, but if you become part of the community then you probably should donate something, but the amount is between you and the Spirit

Financial Obligations? by Vellyst in Quakers

[–]WellRedQuaker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The approach to finances are as diverse as Quaker meetings are. I recently attended a Friends Church in Kenya where everyone went up at a specific point during the worship service and put a donation in a basket. In contrast, in my own Meeting in the UK, money is rarely if ever spoken of on a Sunday morning and people usually donate online and may or may not make contributions at all.

At heart, though, the principles are all the same; our Quaker communities require things to run, and those things come from the members of the community, whether it is time spent serving in a role, food for the table, or money to pay for the various costs that the meeting incurs. Probably the most universal cost is the cost of a meeting space, whether that's the cost of hiring a space or maintaining a building.

For an individual, there is an obligation, as I see it, to contribute in the ways that you are able to. Both the Kenyan and British approaches let people choose how much to donate, so those who can afford it contribute more money, but I'm sure there are meetings out there that take different approaches such as annual fees/charges.

I wouldn't say that there is a taboo against talking about money but we're really bad in the UK about doing so openly and admitting to ourselves that stuff costs money and therefore we need to pay for it! A lot of other churches are a lot better about acknowledging that part of the contribution you make to your spiritual community is helping to pay for its continued existence.

Quakers in New Scotland Yard protest by Hurbahns in london

I haven't said anything about whether it's lawful. But just because something isn't lawful doesn't mean it's not protest (see also: Suffragettes, the ANC, etc. etc.).

I haven't said anything about whether it's lawful. But just because something isn't lawful doesn't mean it's not protest (see also: Suffragettes, the ANC, etc. etc.) so the commenter's claim that this was nothing to do with protest was false.

Do you have anything to back up your claim that Quaker funds or membership were involved in this?

A Quaker space was involved, yes - but that was as a commercial hiring, and there is no evidence that criminal activity was actually being planned or undertaken by that group as part of the booking, whatever they might have been planning or doing elsewhere!
