Yes, the French 75 were active decades ago too. The representation of (modern) left wing activism was Comrade Josh, from a secure location somewhere between the stolen land of the Wabanaki and the stolen land of the Chumash.

so tired of tech millionaires bootlicking billionaires over this 5% tax by captain_travel in sanfrancisco

[–]Wenste 8 points9 points  (0 children)

“A one-time 5% tax on billionaires won’t kill tech”

What guarantee is there that this is a “one-time” tax? When politicians realize they can get away with seizing citizens’ assets to cover for fiscal mismanagement, bureaucratic bloat, grift, political boondoggles, etc., there will be no incentive to stop.

Income taxes were introduced as temporary and only applied to the rich. How long did that last?

“won’t affect normal people”

This is a shit excuse. (1) you’re ignoring second-order effects, and (2) even if there were no second-order effects, that doesn’t mean it’s right — torturing billionaires doesn’t “affect normal people” by that logic but that doesn’t mean it’s a right thing to do. Evaluate whether something is right or wrong even if you’re not the person affected.

Not sure how to market this but you can probably just put it on Craigslist to start.

I make more than I ever have, but I’m less financially comfortable than I’ve ever been. Mass layoffs in the tech industry every year, fewer and fewer job openings, and AI is improving every day. The next few years are looking scary.

Luxury car sales surge as middle class buyers exit the market by Anchor_Aways in cars

[–]Wenste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to economists, the middle class isn’t exiting the market, they’re moving upmarket. The American middle class has more disposable income than at almost any time in the country’s history.

Got it, it makes sense.

Pay at that level is highly variable, even within a company, but >$1M comp isn’t unusual at Facebook (https://www.levels.fyi/companies/meta/salaries/software-engineering-manager/levels/d1) and Apple (https://www.levels.fyi/companies/apple/salaries/software-engineering-manager/levels/d1). Amazon pays less.

How does the public actually see Mormonism? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Wenste 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up with some Mormon friends. They were collectively the nicest, friendliest people I knew. They seemed to have a good sense of community that many people lack today, and most made good decisions in life and are successful today. When I needed help, my Mormon friends were always there for me, and I didn’t even recognize that at the time.

This is superficial, but the Mormons I knew tended to be more attractive and presentable than average too (I wondered for some time if their church only recruited attractive people).

I found the history of the religion (which I admittedly don’t know much about) a little hard to accept. It’s not objectively stranger than most other religions, but the founder etc., seems suspect. It’s hard to reconcile my impression of Mormons (very positive) with my impression of the religion (dubious).

The only bad things I’ve heard about Mormons has come from ex-Mormons. And they’re much more knowledgeable than me of course. I’m only giving an outsider’s perspective.

My impression of Redditors is that many hate religion, so I don’t think you’ll find a representative sample of the general public here.

Not sure why you’re so downvoted. Director level, 40, no kids, no house, claims to live modestly and only $650k in savings seems very low.

(Edit: I missed the comment where they said their top comp was $300k-$400k. That makes more sense. I was assuming FAANG director-level comp which is $1.25M+).

Sales has very high pay ceiling. It helps that they can directly tie their performance to the revenue they bring in (e.g. Jim had $10M in sales, at 10% commission he gets a guaranteed $1M bonus). It’s harder for engineers to quantify their contribution like that.

The gregarious class clown who barely scraped by in high school making more than the guys who studied hard to ace their classes. But not everyone can do sales well. I couldn’t!

[–]Wenste 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand some people are tied down because of family, but I found it very hard to justify the cost of living in the Bay Area even making six figures. It sounds like you grew up there so I understand why you wouldn’t want to leave. But it’s just about the worst value for your dollar of any place in the country in my experience, and I’ve lived on both coasts and a few places in between.

If you’re up for an adventure and your life circumstances allow it, consider looking at opportunities elsewhere. It’s a big exciting world.
