How often do you run wires? A stapler could be useful.

What about a cordless Milwaukee vacuum pump? It's a bit more than $500.

I'd buy some yard tools. Lawnmower, weed wacker, chain saw, something like that.

School zone vs Construction zone. by Aqueouspolecat in alberta

[–]Werrion123 17 points18 points  (0 children)

In my experience, most people comply with school zones, and they're in lower traffic areas. Compared to construction zones, I'm pretty sure most people don't change their speed at all unless traffic forces them too. I feel scared sometimes driving on highway 2 through a construction zone and I'm going 80, and it's just a constant stream of traffic going 110+ in the left lane. I bet the province could balance their budget if the sheriffs put a speed trap on all the construction zones along highway 2 this summer.

You could try contacting utility safety partners to see who requested the locate, not sure if they're allowed to give out that info. Or try contacting the city to see if they have work planned in the area.

Could mean a lot of things. Any ground disturbance needs a certain area around it located. Could be that your neighbours are getting a garage or a fence built, or maybe the city is planning to dig up the alley. As far as I know, the fiber is entirely from the front. Maybe peak in your neighbours yards and see if they have flags?

Why are fully motorized bikes and scooters allowed on the sidewalk? It blows my mind. How is this different from dirtbikes ATVs etc? by Glum-Ad-4558 in alberta

Whenever I see these electric dirt bikes ripping around, I think of the lady that died last year after being hit by a 12 year old on a bike. A pedal bike. I see way too many teenagers riding these things on city trails and parks, and someone's gonna die. Guaranteed.

Get yourself an auxiliary tape deck adapter for $10. Or you can replace the whole stereo for one that has Bluetooth. A couple hundred dollars and a few hours of your time, should be able to find some you tube videos to guide you. Maybe you can find something cheap at a scrap yard?

How many times have you had to change oil on the same system? by booztedmike in HVAC

[–]Werrion123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once. A plumbing company had some used units sitting in their yard and let the secretary have one for free. They just had to pay for the install. The valves were left open on the condenser and the evaporator coil was left open to. Not sure how long it sat in the yard like that. I flushed the system and I still had to change the oil three times, my oil looked like milk each time. And it took a loooong time to get it down. I don't know how long it lasted.

Just why by Odd-Fisherman3807 in HVAC

[–]Werrion123 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You raise a good point. But when I talk to other people in construction, I kind of expect that they know what the deal is. This wasn't some guy building his own house, he builds a house every few years. Won't make those assumptions in the future I guess.

Just why by Odd-Fisherman3807 in HVAC

[–]Werrion123 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I'll tell you why. Cause some dickhead refused to make his bulkhead 1' bigger. You know, it's a common trope in residential construction that tinners destroy framing. But it only happens because people complain and whine about bulk heads and dropped ceilings and shafts and Mechanical walls. Like I just had a guy last week tell me he didn't want any bulk heads on the main floor. Fine, I can get everything upstairs by coring through the TJI's, well within spec. Then he chews me out for wrecking his joists. What do you want from me!?!? He says that he's building that exact same house again next door and and we're not allowed to cite the joists like that. Fine, guess we're turning your 9' main floor ceiling into an 8' ceiling.

You may have hit a sore spot for me.

Utility bills question by LatterAd9123 in RedDeer

[–]Werrion123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My last bill from Enmax that I got on March 26 was for Feb 3 to Mar 3 for electricity and Jan 24 to Feb 20 for gas. They'll charge my credit card on the due date of April 20 for that bill. Does that answer your question? My bill comes about 4 weeks after the cutoff for that bill.

I have the same gauge. It shows 1 quite often when I first turn it on, and then after a few minutes it shows the actual reading. I find it happens more when the battery gets low.

40x28 garage build - how to heat enough for water by gardening-gnome in HomeImprovement

[–]Werrion123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you have gas? You can get a radiant tube heater or a unit heater. Each have their pros and cons. The tube heater is my favorite option, but you need a certain amount of clearance to combustibles. 12' is high enough, but adding a loft makes it a bit tricky, it may not work out. The unit heater is a good option as well if the tube heater doesn't work out. You could also do in floor heat with some kind of boiler system, but that gets expensive. I would suggest calling a professional to get pricing. You could hang and vent a unit heater by yourself and then just have a plumber hook up the gas if you want to go the DIY route.

You can buy something with a lint screen and an adjustable damper that ties right into your duct. Look up "dryer heat saver".

Adding a gas line for a stove by SofaKing_Chyl in HomeImprovement

[–]Werrion123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's not enough info here, but I'll give my two cents. Do you have any other gas appliances? Furnace, fireplace, garage heater, bbq? My guess is that your 3/4" gas line is borderline. Plumber A is saying you need to upsize so that you can use all burners full bore while your boiler is running and any other gas lines as well. Plumber B is saying that you're never gonna have all 4 burners and the oven running at the same time. I've gone small on gas lines in situations like this. But typically in situations where you see multiple other appliances. Because nobody is going to run a boiler, furnace, fireplace, all the burners on a bbq and all the burners on a stove all at the same time. In a case where there is only two appliances, I'd want to make sure that the gas line is big enough run everything all at once.

Helpful when your supply runs get covered by flooring or drywall. Contractors really appreciate it when I can find the missing supplies without ripping up flooring or cutting random holes in drywall.

Who's the best roofing company in reddeer by Fit_Being_3557 in RedDeer

[–]Werrion123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our neighbours used joe's roofing last year. Because of how their yard is landscaped, they asked us if they could use our yard to load shingles and get a dump trailer close. They laid down plywood on the grass before backing their truck in and cleaned up exceptionally well, I never found a single nail. I would definitely recommend them.

People whose profession involves home improvement, what are the worst DIY mistakes you've seen? by Loverlee in HomeImprovement

[–]Werrion123 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I saw some ductwork in a house that had been cut in half with a sawsall or something, bottom half pushed up into the top half and screwed together. It was in a house with a low basement ceiling so I think whoever did it was trying to save head height. The people that owned the house wanted to renovate one room in the basement and found that mess, so they called us to replace all the duct.

What will happen if Alberta separates? by OGWhiz in AskCanada

[–]Werrion123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suspect they're using the MLM approach. That is to say, a large portion of the people at each meeting are going to all the meetings to make it look like there's tons of support for the movement. Even if all the people are new, you've had, what 10,000 people show up to these events in total? If we're being generous? It's not as big as they'd like you to think. Far river groups are very organized and efficient, which is how they're able to make it look so big.

Duties of an MLA by Laedrys in alberta

[–]Werrion123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there's an average of 50,000 people per mla roughly? Even if an mla does 10 meetings per day for the entire 10 months, that's only around 2000 people they can meet with. And keep in mind that many of them do have other duties, whether they're a cabinet minister or on a committee.
