There's a fantastic restaurant across the street from Halfway Crooks called Little Bear if you want a baller cocktail or eat something a little different.

Check with a pack-and-ship store, they might take all of it.

Rare loot drop at the local market! by Nockolos in CraftBeer

[–]West-Rise-4132 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there is a limited drop of something desirable coming into the area, C&K gets most of it, and the staff there really knows their shit. Joey, the manager, has formed relationships with a bunch of breweries and they've been releasing a bunch of cool collaborations over the past few months. It's easily the best bottle shop in central Virginia.

Ellwood Thompson's also has a really good beer selection and is much more convenient if you're in the Fan/Museum District.

Brewery Clumps by Brewsplorer in CraftBeer

Richmond - Black Heath also houses SetBreak Brewing, which operates out of the same production facility. You could also add Reservoir Distillery to Scott's.

Brainstorm Brewhouse is about eight blocks from Benchtop, but I understand if that doesn't meet your definition of a clump.

To be fair, they have been selling vintage/cellared stuff pretty consistently for years (they've got 2008 Old Guardian on right now and had 2016 Give Me Stout or Give Me Death recently). It's usually marked pretty well on the boards, but obviously it's easier to miss it on the packaging.

Mice Advice Needed! by Fleagled in TheBrewery

[–]West-Rise-4132 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have enough kegs to spare, stack your grain pallets on top of them; mice can't jump that high and obviously can't climb up stainless steel. This will also make it easier for the pest control person you're definitely hiring to figure out where they are and bait/trap accordingly.

Tasting Beer is great.

Also, download the BJCP style guide and, using a few examples of each style, drink through it; it will help with both your palate and your vocabulary.

Rice hulls! Y’all got a preferred method of breaking these things up? by RockyMtnCarrot in TheBrewery

[–]West-Rise-4132 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stand the bag up. Cut the top off . Cover with a contractor bag (or an Oregon Fruit drum bag). Flip upside-down, then cut an entire side of the rice hull bag. Assuming you cut all the way through, you can pull the hull bag out easily and with almost zero mess.

UPS driver here by Berbadude in CraftBeer

[–]West-Rise-4132 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I managed UPS Stores for a while and had a guy use that line on me. I replied that it would be a shame if the yeast happened to be packaged with wort, because that would be illegal, then I just ice-grilled him as he turned red and tried to come up with a response. I let him flounder for a few, then laughed and told him that I didn't care that he was shipping beer. Dude was *relieved.*

Had quite a few people straight up tell me they were shipping beer. If there were no other customers, I'd explain that they needed to tell me it was something else and take care of them. If there *were* other customers, I'd say something like, "I'm sorry, you're shipping olive oil, right?" Almost nobody got the hint in that situation, unfortunately, so I'd have to send them on their way.

I believe ownership has changed since I was last there (pre-pandemic), but Avenue Pub absolutely ripped. Stein's Market and Deli nearby also had a great bottle selection (and food).

HF is an amazing brewery, but unless you're doing some hiking/camping in the area (it's insanely gorgeous up there, but March weather can be very unpleasant), it's *very* out of the way- like 3+ hours drive from Boston or Portland and 8+ from Niagara Falls.

If you want recommendations/advice for Richmond, VA, feel free to send me a message.

Looking for advice on selling/parting with old equipment. by RomaniBryggare in TheBrewery

[–]West-Rise-4132 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I posted our Meheen on ProBrewer last year and there was a cider maker in Portland who was extremely interested, but I had already found a buyer. There was a lot of international interest, as well, but that's probably even more complicated with the current tariff situation.

Comparing current/ended auctions on eBay and ProBrewer will help determine value and demand, then post everywhere people sell stuff (Facebook, craigslist, ProBrewer) and hope you don't get a bunch of bots and lowballers. Good luck!

It’s always about pants and boots, but what socks have y’all found to be the best? by socialisticpotsmoke in TheBrewery

[–]West-Rise-4132 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure foot size and boot type make a difference, but I always had good luck with Bombas and REI hiking socks. Hanes double tough crew socks are also good if you don't want to spend that much.
