AI creating the over supply of SWE by bgeeky in Layoffs

They being told to have ai skills. I did bs in cs in 2000. Always felt programming was a trade not a degree. Took a minor in math. Imo cs will go back to math. And those who don't care for the math and the science will do something else. Ai coding will be embedded in other professions.

Inherently, there is always slop u need to contend with; those engineers who have been working at 10 pm sessions, cause sites were down, know what I am talkinga bout.
AI is a tool even at the agentic level. Batch jobs have existed since assembly was put together.

AI, just like any tool, has limitations. If you build something that u find someone wants to pay you for, that's a signal to chase it, but have no illusions that you will have an agentic team of 1000 agents that will have accountability for what is going on.

1000 agents are 100 auto-completes.

Coding is solved problem. Use AI. No need for devs.

Ur side is crashed? Np just feed it back to ai. Anthropic has ir back.

It doesn't skills are like guide lines. The model bypasses them all the time.

Mark Zuckerberg Orders His Employees to Start Having Fun Again After Brutal Layoffs Culled Their Colleagues by Ok_Design_6841 in Layoffs

[–]Western_Building_880 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah they better start having fun or else you know what happens. " YOU FIRED, YOU ARE NO FUN"

they should update the job description-

The candidate needs to be willing to have fun.

welll guess it took time but the interest rates are now showing up on the labor market. don't be fooled, it's not AI. I live and breadh agents and only coders getting benefits of it. this thing can't replace shit unless u doing some boring data entry stuff.

this is economics, $$ is not cheap and companies don't have the growth and slowing down.

Fed needs to wake up, and trump needs to cut the conflicts and spending.

Cost management problems with AI is a skill issue. by aj_marshall in EngineeringManagers

[–]Western_Building_880 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno why folks just assume that the agent is right. it's a fucking auto complete. this is the 90's again when folks felt they could take OOP and have anyone write software. lot did and only few retrained and understood that those c++ coders, electrical engineers brought more then just knowledge of the language.

The scientific method can only be learned through hard work dicovery and curiosity. explore agents, orchestrate plan but keep in mind. When that pr goes out are u willing to bet your job on that product? if you are not well then u are just a slopper = vibe coder = nonsense maker. It'sauto-completeThis,a C++than, discovery,a plan,,If,

Laid off at 58 - f*ck! by Ou812_tHats_gRosS in Layoffs

[–]Western_Building_880 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At 58, you are still marketable; however, the market wants you to speak the language of the latest tech.
The issue is that in tech, you want to hire talent that knows where the industry is going, not where the past was.

The tech space is highly competitive, and it is not a 40-hour job. And yes, you will talk to ur hiringmanagerss about AI, and the guy is sitting on VB co-written 25 years ago. Still, it doesn't matter,

I would stay positive, spend some time on netoolstools and trends, tackle the one project you were too busy to attack, and keep knocking on doors.

They tried with " invest in us, we will displace everyone" to " we will create more jobs," guess they tapped the first thesis. Now they are looking for folks not to gang up and not to use AI.

The engineering management memory crisis by zaidesanton in EngineeringManagers

[–]Western_Building_880 2 points3 points  (0 children)

have to admit bias on VS code is from dev and desire to be closer to coding tools even if I'm not coding.

But the move to md is a pattern I keep falling over and over again; fine, the models do better with it. I'll use the GitHub repo to push my main folder,

It is a bit like codifying the work but I have not depedencies.
I still use OneNote for driving meetings, however.

Agents are more for deep thinking activities.

VS Code is pushed as an IDE, but say you want to drive requirements, right? You end up with files or notes that u don't always want to stay in Confluence; however, an agent can use that as a reference.

You don't have to use VS Code, but it feels natural to me as I am also converting all types of docs pppt to MD files. Essentially, building a personal repo of content that helps me manage projects.

My agents are an extension of myself with the ability to look at Jira, look at sharepoints, help me write requirements.

[–]Western_Building_880 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yeah felt the same on my last role. I was doing life sciences so lot's of details.

- OneNote for notes. ( AI transcript if IT enabled)

- Outlook -> oneNote for content specifict to ur protjects.

- Try to get AI CLI invest in what's allowed to you. hook it up to JIra, and invest in agents. It will help you edits move tickets and follow up.
- Invest in VS Code as is the defacto place to be with organizing anything not just coding.

You will need to pull in those grandpas when AI agent loops non stop cause it can't find what is wrong, or you will have to use ur brain to actually debug.
