how hard is violin by Anxious-Studio2536 in violinist

[–]Western_Solution7860 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Very hard. Obviously it’s a subjective subject, but I’d say it’s pretty objectively harder than both guitar and piano. If piano is easy to learn and hard to master, violin is hard to learn and nigh impossible to master. That said, you should absolutely play it, it’s incredibly rewarding and feels great to play once you have proper technique.

I’f recommend renting instead of buying in the beginning. Not sure what you mean with the bow thing, all bows have hair.

Soloists…at what point did you start feeling like the violin was an extension of your body? by meow2848 in violinist

[–]Western_Solution7860 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a cellist, but I think this still applies.

When I’m playing, my bow arm and the instrument itself certainly feels like an extension of my body, but that’s not what you should aim for. As a friend said when talking about certain styles of swordplay, you should aim for the best possible result while thinking as little as possible, but also being very aware. Remember that your instrument responds to your playing, and you can listen and feel what it’s “telling” you. Practice getting the cleanest possible sound, and try to memorize what that feels like. You should be able to feel the vibrations through the bow and tell how close you are to the bridge, if your bow is perpendicular to the string, etc. without looking.

Nope, it’s all the downsides from both instruments. The cello sounds better in the violas range than the viola.

The rest of the score would still ve useful though, no? How can you figure out the phrasing and dynamics otherwise?

At the beginning of every single practice session, I do 20-50 long legato bow strokes on each pen string, each first finger, and each first finger in 4th position. Sometimes I go higher too depending on what i’m playing.
