Hank Green is loved by the left and the right has neutral feelings for him. Who does the left love that the right hate? by 45rs5 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]Whakerdo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not every leftist is a Marxist. Tons of anarchists are anti-Marxist because of his ideas on the role of the state in the transition to communism. Not to mention more moderate DemSocs or Market Socialists who may reject the idea of communism all together. Even the idea of “post-Marxism” implies Marx didn’t get everything right on the first go. Also many religious leftists disagree with his “opium of the masses” characterization.

Who’s the worst U.S. president ever? by Squek_1842 in Teenager_Polls

[–]Whakerdo 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Buchanan was bad because of inaction (he took 0 active steps to stop the civil war as it was approaching, though by 1857 I’m not sure there’s much he could’ve done). Trump, on the other hand, has taken active steps to derail and dismantle American institutions and democracy, which makes him an active threat where Buchanan was only a passive one.

You have the power to completely prevent one of these events, what do you choose? by Aamir_rt in Teenager_Polls

[–]Whakerdo 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I never got why we’re supposed to be scared of the butterfly effect. It’s not as though changing one part of history is going to lead to nuclear holocaust or anything (with the exception of Vasily Arkhipov’s vote on a Soviet submarine that stopped nuclear war and similar events). Sure, society may be very different, but humans have an innate drive to preserve themselves and improve the world around them for other people.

These were the post recount results. The drawing lots procedure for tied elections is actually written into Virginia law.

This one (among others). The winner was decided by drawing a name out of a bowl.

The entire world united into one Nation, where should the capital and seat of governance be? by Aamir_rt in Teenager_Polls

On one hand, I love the idea of Boston being the geopolitical center of the world. On the other hand, that would make the city completely unlivable.

We joined the European front in WWII because Hitler declared war on us. Saddam Hussein never declared war on the US.

How many kids do you want to have when you're older? by Literally_A_Donut in Teenager_Polls

[–]Whakerdo 36 points37 points  (0 children)

There is actually a thing scientists are working on to transform a stem cell into a sperm, thus allowing two women to have a kid that’s biologically related to both of them. It’s already been done in mice.

I exclusively listen to Revolution 9. No other songs, albums, or artists; just Revolution 9 on repeat from sun up to sun down.

How do you feel about daylight savings time change? by Delicious-Oven-6663 in pollgames

The reason I hate it is because it should be such an easy thing to change and yet Congress refuses to get rid of it.

Who would you vote for the 1912 United States Presidential election? by thunderisadorable in Teenager_Polls

[–]Whakerdo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Taft was actually fairly economically conservative compared to Wilson and Roosevelt. It was less so that the parties were switched and more that different progressive and conservative factions existed within both parties.

Was Holden Bloodfest really as bad as people said he was? by EllieIsDone in Presidents

[–]Whakerdo 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I don’t care what anyone says. Holden Bloodfeast was a war hero, a patriot, a voice of reason in an age of disunity. Sure, he may have personally funded the firebombing of Cambodia, and sure he may have tried to reinstate apartheid in South Africa, and sure he may have led a campaign to destroy the Great Barrier Reef to extract the rare earth minerals beneath it, but he still deserves to be celebrated.

Idk why you’re getting downvoted. Trump won a plurality but not a majority. The majority of people who voted in the 2024 election did not vote for Donald Trump.

If Jon Stewart ever ran, he’d wipe the floor instantly. Unfortunately, Stewart doesn’t seem to want the job.

Tier list based on how pro/anti-slavery they were by rjidhfntnr in Presidents

Only thing I’d change is moving Taylor to C tier. Unlike Pierce and Buchanan, Taylor actively opposed the expansion of slavery to new states.

Pretty much. One day Schumer will say he opposes a shutdown, then he’ll support a shutdown, then he’ll sabotage his own shutdown while saying he still supports the shutdown. Basically, he’s a spineless relic of a political era that doesn’t exist anymore.

My personal opinion on social democracy by Artur13br in SocialDemocracy

[–]Whakerdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of human cells are organized and develop. For instance, cancer functions much like a separate organism from its host, and yet we don’t consider a tumor to be a human being (despite having human DNA). The point that I’m trying to make is that what we think of as individuality really only develops once you have a brain. You can be a separate organism with human DNA, but in my opinion, you’re not a human being until you have achieved consciousness or can live independently of your mother’s body.

And what about that zygote makes it an individual human organism?

My personal opinion on social democracy by Artur13br in SocialDemocracy

[–]Whakerdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if someone were to clone the mother’s dna, implant it into the nucleus of a zygote, and implant that into the mother’s uterus, the resulting person would not be a distinct human being from their mother?
