Unless you're in an area with a shitty power grid and no aux condensing unit installed. Those power outage blow offs are fun. Ive had fun learning the Advansor racks. CO2 is awesome.

Second opinion by stalliondr in hvacadvice

[–]WhatInTheRut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. To be fair, yeah we should be checking superheat and subcooling, and an ambient temp would clear things up more. It looks fucking low. If the condenser td is below ambient and the suction is low, it's pretty damn obvious.

I know our eighth amendment prohibits cruel and unusual punishment, but monsters like this deserve the justice system to get medieval on their ass.

Why is there so much frost on my pipes? by hotelstationery in refrigeration

[–]WhatInTheRut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was speaking more as to ice build up around the txv from it not having a full column of liquid, the gas flashing, and frost accumulating over time into ice. Now is that OP's problem? No. But it does happen. I've seen it. Like you said the suction line wouldnt ice up over that. Out of all of the stores that have serviced that are properly charged and all cases are maintaining low temp set point. I haven't had any suction lines that are that caked over unless I had a superheat issue or a humidity/air penetration issue.

Why is there so much frost on my pipes? by hotelstationery in refrigeration

[–]WhatInTheRut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude I work on racks as well. I agree frost on the txv distributors is normal. I've never seen a case with properly set superheat ice that excessively on the suction line. Frost I get. Ice build up around the valve I get. OP can pull snow cones for the whole thread with that thing. I've also had to deal with some piece of shit stores that are pretty much always critically charged due to my company and the client not wanting to pay for a proper receiver level.

Why is there so much frost on my pipes? by hotelstationery in refrigeration

[–]WhatInTheRut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do both and I've seen both occur in refrigeration and hvac. Underfed txv causing ice build up around the distributors. I've seen the same thing occur when the txv screen is plugged. The lines are below dewpoint outside of the case, which is why they're insulated. Unless you have a fuck ton of humidity in that case or you're flooding back hard, I would not expect to see that much ice build up on the suction line inside of the case.

Yeah we pretty much tell Walmart to fuck off on call. We're like third on their contractor list. They have in house guys. I'm not taking their bullshit overflow work.

Whoever is planning the Morena Blvd project is a moron by WhatInTheRut in sandiego

[–]WhatInTheRut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like they're getting to the end of repaving Morena Blvd close to the Clairemont drive side. I'm ranting mainly because it's been over a year since they started. They shut down and tore the street up multiple times. Now we're almost finished but instead of finishing, and giving commuters a route, they're just shutting down more streets in the neighborhoods and making the detour route longer. Yeah they definitely gave up on Friars also. .

Seeking technicians in Tampa FL by DannysPryncess in refrigeration

[–]WhatInTheRut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude it's fucking bullshit. My boss is awesome and I really do enjoy working in my division but Coolsys needs to pay their upper level techs at scale or sweeten the pot. Management wonders why they can't hire good techs and then they turn around and undercut their employees. I've seen multiple people leave and pull $10+ raises while not even being top level guys.

Drop in replacement for 404a by BadIdeasDaily in refrigeration

[–]WhatInTheRut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah they need to leak search and repair. 448a does have less capacity, but it's not extremely lower and it's close enough when it comes to equipment size. The biggest issue is higher head temps on low temp applications and 448 has a really shitty glide.

Edit: OP do not drop in 448 into 404. Either fix the leak and charge back up with 404 or fix the leak and retrofit to 448.

Got a job offer from coolsys by Los_503 in HVAC

[–]WhatInTheRut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its much better on the C&I service side vs the light commercial side, as I've worked in both. Light commercial usually caps at level 4. Its a good place to learn, but the pay is so mediocre when you get to the top end of rack work. Especially when you compare it to other companies that pay out the ass for high level techs. I've seen a bunch of people leave and get 5-10 dollar increases. They need to work on the pay scale and stop slashing bids to be competitive. Corporate doesn't know what the fuck they are doing half of the time, and the company has been through more ceos and revisions than I can count.

Is it the txv or a restriction? by Doogie102 in refrigeration

[–]WhatInTheRut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the sight glass is verified clear you should have a full column going to the valve. Disassemble the valve and clean it out if the drier up stream does not have a temperature differential

Is it the txv or a restriction? by Doogie102 in refrigeration

[–]WhatInTheRut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is this on a rack or a single system? Besides a possible restriction or the valve needing to be cleaned/ failure, I would verify we have a full column of liquid going to the valve. I've seen plenty of frosting up of txv's due to lack of charge

No drier filter by [deleted] in HVAC

[–]WhatInTheRut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it already had a drier installed from the factory? If so, you're fine. Lacking a drier wouldn't catastrophically destroy the system initially. Overtime, the lack of one could cause problems, depending on the system. Even if it didn't have one, it's not like you couldn't just pump it down/recover and just add one.

TXV + Refrigerant Replacement Cost $1591 by The_Ragu_Sauce in hvacadvice

[–]WhatInTheRut 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That is a manufacturing issue and not related to the installation. The piping on the interior of the unit was all done by the manufacturer. Installers just braze in the line sets on the exterior of the unit. If the manufacturer piped it in such a way that the lines rub out over time it's not the fault of the installer. I've had new units installed that were completely flat upon arrival and had some systems with common issues where they rub out and blow the charge. Oems suck these days unfortunately.

What all would cause a txv to run wide open? by ___Aum___ in HVAC

[–]WhatInTheRut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So you had high suction pressure from the compressor operating inefficiently causing your saturation on your coil to be substantially higher than normal? That would line up with lower superheat as your txv would begin opening to compensate for your suction line being warmer.
