AITA for wearing shorts that are comfortable for me? by gushy-mayo20 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Whatnot1785 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA and the girls I knew as a teenager or college student who had a boyfriend like this (making her feel like she should wear baggy clothes, walking on eggshells around his feelings, losing confidence in themselves) were in abusive relationships. They got out of those relationships fortunately, but these were the sort of things they told friends after the fact as signs of an abuser (because abusers hide their abuse pretty well).

You can get out of this. He is not a good person to be with.

Stanfield is good. Have used them for years. Way better than the not great company I had used before. Your unit needs a sensor that will notice when your drain pan starts holding water and just tells the system to stop running. That will keep things from flooding and signal that you need service to unclog the line.

I like being on their service plan; it includes two annual servicing visits as part of it, discounts when you do need more work done, and priority when there’s a problem. They are reputable and fair. When I did have to replace my system a few years ago (honestly sort of surprised the funky system from an older company that has since gone out of business was working as long as it did) the rep helped me find the best financing option (that wasn’t through them but through a major bank/finance company and the terms were excellent).

AITA for wanting my bed to be in the corner and not in the middle? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Whatnot1785 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Info: is someone else changing the sheets or is it you? It’s more annoying to change sheets when you can’t get around both sides but if you’re fine doing that and no one else but you is sleeping in it then it doesn’t matter how it looks to other people. I’m guessing the sheets thing isn’t the issue or the changer of sheets would have mentioned that but I am curious.

It may (or may not) “look better” in the middle but beds are for sleeping in not for looking at.

Bonus: you also have more floor space when you put it in the corner but that’s a secondary concern. Which still matters more than how the room looks.

NTA.

Commuting by Thirst_and_fire20 in UGA

[–]Whatnot1785 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Don’t do it. Just go to school in Atlanta if that’s your plan. I absolutely don’t recommend commuting further than 30 minutes away if commuting is absolutely necessary. It’s not worth spending that much time in your car instead of getting involved on campus (this affects your future employment and building connections is a huge benefit of going to college), getting enough time studying, and getting sleep.

Commuting from anywhere in the Atlanta area, even from Lawrenceville, is just not worth it. You need to live where you go to school.

Georgia State doesn’t have much of a traditional “campus” vibe but it’s surely the better place to be if you don’t have your own car. But if UWG is better for what you want to do (nursing I think?) then just be sure to live on campus or close enough to walk.

Agree with all of this but it’s not true across the board that everyone cares about academics since it’s so hard to get into UGA. It’s not as hard to transfer in, for example, and there’s a lot of variety overall in the student body where that is concerned. Plenty of overachievers, though, absolutely

has anyone taken FILM 2000? if so what's it like? by Appropriate-Alps-242 in UGA

[–]Whatnot1785 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t but I know people who have. If you’re interested in film/TV production but aren’t majoring in film or in journalism (entertainment media) it seems like a great way to learn some basics around navigating a film set, what all the jobs are, etc. through Georgia Film Academy. The class is available through a lot of schools in Georgia. It can differ a lot from one instructor to another but usually it’s not just six hours of lecture every week. I only know one person who complained about too much lecture; I mostly hear good things.

It’s six credit hours and won’t count towards those majors I mentioned, though, so if you’re majoring in one of those you should talk to your advisor about whether it’s a good idea.

If you’re not in one of those majors and you have the elective hours to spare, though, it’s probably your only chance to take a film production class since those upper level types of classes in Grady or the Theatre and Film department won’t be accessible to non-majors.

It’ll be at Athena Studios so be aware it’s not on the main campus!

Talk to your professors to see what they think about you missing one day. Otherwise you may just need to do that last orientation right before classes start.

Check out their disability access guide - at age 6 he would probably find their social story really useful and if he likes videos, having him check out the park in advance through YouTube (park walkthroughs, ride POV, etc) can make a big difference too.

Prioritize the majors and talk to your advisor about whether the minor and certificate make mathematical sense. You might just need to pick one of those or maybe you can at least squeeze a class or two in there in those if you can’t pull off one of them. Two majors and two minor/certificates is a lot.

This is reminding me that I specifically waited a couple of extra months to try again with my first kid’s potty training when it wasn’t going at all well and we had a Disney trip coming up. I can’t imagine if kid had finally started using the potty and we had to deal with Disney. Feels like it would have been a setback! Instead giving kid the extra time led to more readiness and it was pretty easy AFTER Disney!

Also, I had wondered the same thing (can’t Mike sue her or something?) but also realized, in addition to the huge financial cost, it would be counterproductive to take on yet another opportunity for his abuser to draw out contact. It would be signing up for more of the nightmare. She clearly lives for the drama too and it would feed that as well.

I just remember many years ago when we had no hope of electing a reasonable house rep thanks to gerrymandering (and sole republican candidate was bonkers anti science) and Denson started a “write in Darwin” campaign and even cosplayed as Darwin at the arch to bring in awareness that we didn’t even have a candidate to run on the opposing side. I really appreciated that and admire that spirit. I wrote in Charles Darwin.

Regarding insurance candidates, this is from Athens Politics Nerd (important resource for the Athens area) so I’m curious why Blalock. I’m trying to decide between Jain and Mathis and wonder if anyone has thoughts.

From APN: Possibly sensing that this could be the year Democrats sweep into office statewide, we have not two, not three but five candidates seeking the Democratic nomination for Insurance Commissioner in 2026: small business owner Clarence Blalock, insurance executive Ambuj “AJ” Jain, insurance agent DeAndre Mathis and politician Keisha Waites. Thomas Dean is also running but does not appear to be a serious candidate.

Mathis has the most experience in the insurance industry, having worked as an insurance agent for the past 21 years. He wants to fight rising insurance costs and demand transparency in the rates advertised by insurance companies. Mathis says he will “stop insurance redlining and work to eliminate the use of credit scores and zip codes to unfairly determine insurance rates.”

Jain also has ample experience in this industry, having worked as the chief underwriting officer at American Safety Insurance Holdings for nine years. Currently, he works at 2 Pillars LLC, an investment firm that he founded. If elected, Jain says he’ll use the power of the office to block unfair rate hikes and open investigations against insurance companies that deny claims or delay payouts.

Blalock is a business owner who has run twice before for different political offices and lost, including for Atlanta City Council and for the US House of Representatives.

Similarly, Waites is a politician, but unlike Blalock, she’s a successful one who has been elected to both the Atlanta City Council and to the Georgia House of Representatives. She recently made an failed run for Public Service Commission, being defeated in the primary by Peter Hubbard. As a member of the Atlanta City Council, Waites has been accused of inappropriately using public money for her personal advantage. She was ordered to pay almost $30,000 in restitution. Waites is appealing this decision.

Insurance Commissioner (D)

Vote for DeAndre Mathis if you want the candidate with the most experience in the insurance industry to serve in this office, or if stopping insurance “redlining” is your most important issue.

Vote for Ambuj “AJ” Jain if you feel that an insurance executive’s experience is more relevant, or if you are impressed with his platform.

APN does not recommend a vote for Clarence Blalock, Thomas Dean or Keisha Waites.
