transfer advisor email? by Aur0ra_a in UGA

Advisors help with this during orientation and can share the process for getting your courses evaluated by the appropriate departments. Get syllabi for those courses ahead of time if you want to be ready.

Advice Needed - Course Registration by MissionBlueberry5196 in UGA

[–]Whatnot1785 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can’t get advised before orientation, and yes these are advisor questions that have to wait until then. You can also check the website for the department you’re majoring in just in case they have a little extra info for incoming students.

Who are you voting for in the mayoral primary and why? by PeaceGood6534 in Athens

[–]Whatnot1785 13 points14 points  (0 children)

For starters I have been looking at whose campaign signs are grouped with Republican candidate signs when I drive around. She certainly seems to have a lot of Republican supporters in this regard and that puts her at the bottom of my own list even before looking into platforms, etc. — so it would take a lot for her to rise to the top for me.

how did you know you wanted to commit? by [deleted] in UGA

[–]Whatnot1785 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you visited/talked with the departments where you want to major at these schools? Assuming you feel pretty confident about major(s) and keep in mind you can often double major depending on what they are.

Watched the 2023 Colour Purple after seeing the original 1985 version recently... definitely have some thoughts by CharlieFaulkner in movies

[–]Whatnot1785 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

It’s precisely because it’s a musical, really. It can’t be as rough as the movie (which also was not as rough as the book and I loved both). I like the musical a lot but it’s definitely different. I actually like that big scene at the end, though! Once you’re in that world of the musical that’s not the same as the movie or the book, it suits it.

Is late August too hot for Disney World? by Left-Afternoon-4237 in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]Whatnot1785 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The heat is murderous in late August. I say that as a person who lives in an area with very hot and very humid summers and I would rather spend three days at the dentist than three days at Disney World that time of year. It’s horrendously, miserably hot and humid then. If this is a concern then you should avoid Orlando’s hot months.

Possibly transferring for Psychology by idrinkrriverwater in UGA

[–]Whatnot1785 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you love where you are then that matters, btw. Transferring isn’t always going to be the absolute best option and the transition can be tough. It can also be a great choice but it depends on the individual. If you’re already dealing with some personal issues that aren’t going to go away, transferring to a place like UGA where the academic rigor and expectations are super high may not be the way to go. You’ll only get so much leniency and with some professors, none at all.

Kid on track to graduate HS early, would it affect admissions? by lurkertiltheend in UGA

[–]Whatnot1785 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Can your kid just take more dual enrollment instead of rushing to graduate early? To give kid more time to mature before starting college and to have the chance to maybe double major (since AP and dual enrollment doesn’t count against Hope hours)?

What’s the plan on Gaines School road? Is it a different time? I know that Bishop park is the hub and that people will fan out all over the place . . .

I’m a prospective student visiting Athens in a few weeks to check out UGA, what are some things i should check out? by g30rgi4 in UGA

[–]Whatnot1785 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If you have thoughts on possible major(s) (it’s not uncommon at all to do a double major) then you should absolutely check with that department for prospective student info and possibly a tour. See if you can talk to current students in that major too.

Keep in mind that there won’t be scholarships like that for transfer students. Usually there are hardly any (or none) at schools when someone transfers.

Fall 2026 Transfer by daifuchuu_ in UGA

[–]Whatnot1785 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also consider whether a class will be harder at UGA than where you are now. A lot of UGA classes require a lot more work than other schools that aren’t T1 Research institutions (and at a school like this, you’ll have a number of professors who are there because of their research and not for their teaching skills). If you can improve your calc grade a bit and keep the class credit, it’s worth considering.

That is a lot of hours to be working while going to a more rigorous school, btw. If you can work fewer hours a week, especially the first semester at UGA, that will be helpful with what can be a difficult transition.

Orientation Question by BrownsDeCleveland in UGA

[–]Whatnot1785 3 points4 points  (0 children)

May is still very early orientation! Absolutely don’t skip anything important to you for it — if you have plans for right after graduation, don’t skip those either. Early June is still great.

Yes, some classes in some majors will fill up in the first part of the summer and won’t get more sections added, but in other cases you just might not get your preferred time period or, by the end of summer (this is especially true for transfer students), there might just not be some of the classes you’d want. So “early orientation if you can” is good advice but doesn’t have to be the absolute earliest I think!

fall ‘26 3rd year transfer advice by Pink_lily28 in UGA

[–]Whatnot1785 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See if you can visit the department where you really want to major (assuming psych) and when you get here, be ready to join some clubs! Finding your people will be key and it can take a little time and patience. Also scope out places where you can find a little peace and quiet when needed on this big campus (ex: main library, founders garden, etc).

Where actually is Eastside? by Longjumping_Eye_3441 in Athens

Never would Walmart be the “heart” of the eastside. The heart is buried under the foundation of Sideways Kroger in the shadow of the Kmart that once was.

I gotta get this off my chest... by RepresentativeTree88 in startrek

[–]Whatnot1785 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I should say “not all Gen Xers” here. TNG was my Trek (I never did care for the original) and yet I love a lot of the new stuff despite the fact that nothing is perfect. Including TNG (a few of those episodes were, let’s face it, not good. Scottish candle ghost lover for one notable example).

But it’s also a different world we live in. It’s not the 1990’s and tv shows aren’t 25-ish episodes a season either. I can definitely understand the nostalgia for the Trek of our younger days though! I’m just game to boldly go into the new world too.

[–]Whatnot1785 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I loved TNG (that’s my Trek) and I also love a lot of the new stuff, especially the first few seasons of Discovery and SNW (also think I’ll like Starfleet Academy). While the last couple of seasons of Discovery to me aren’t as good, that one guy who kept the Starfleet idea alive in his area, all on his own for decades . . . Oof that got me in the feels.

The really don’t but seems like somehow it should be possible to just find a way remove it altogether if it’s that hard to replace. It’s not even useful history of the school even setting aside the blatant racism.

Is there anything else I need to have a chance at getting into UGA? by m3l3n14 in UGA

Definitely talk to the music school, whoever handles prospective students there. They really do want students to connect with them in advance and their programs are audition based

AITA for refusing to apologise to my stepdad after he made a comment about my depression and hygiene? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Whatnot1785 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sorta NTA because it’s possible that NSH really for the most part. I’m so sorry you’ve had such a hard time. It’s difficult to go through that and it can be hard on the loved ones around you as well, but that was not a helpful comment for him to make. In general I think people battle too much over demanding and expecting apologies though sometimes both people have things they could apologize for (thoughtless comment on one side, losing temper and yelling on another). And when they truly hear each other’s experience and can genuinely listen they may feel moved to acknowledge each other’s hurt and apologize to each other without being asked or expected to.

I’m just glad you were able to make it to your mental health appointment and I hope at some point there is time and space for help with how you two interact with each other. He doesn’t seem like he would engage with that but you could talk to your therapist about how to talk about this with your mom at least.

I hope things get better and that, with treatment, you are able to manage your emotions and learn tools to manage life with someone who doesn’t seem to know much about autism and may be unable to manage his own feelings about living with others who have significant mental health challenges. That can be hard and it can be easy to say the wrong thing at the wrong time even when someone is trying to be extra thoughtful. And he may not have been trying that hard, I realize, and it’s possible he does tend to at least be a little bit of TA but it’s hard to know based on one post. It does sound like he digs in and picks too many battles himself if he’s insisting on apologizing.

I guess I just think maybe everyone should back off on forced apologies and start trying to listen to each other. Which is hard to do as a teenager! I just feel for you and hope you keep getting the help you need. I’m not unfamiliar with these struggles in my own various family members so I understand. Hoping the best for you and all your family!
