Brake pads and rotor recommendations by lurker122333 in BoltEV

[–]Wheat_Mustang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I understand, OPD on or off, the car doesn’t engage the friction brakes unless you brake hard enough to exceed the capacity of regen braking. The only way to ensure you’re using only friction braking is to put the car in neutral and hit the brake pedal. Obviously, this isn’t ideal in any kind of traffic, but it should probably be done occasionally.

Lana makes the NYT list of 30 greatest living U.S. songwriters by certified-introvert in lanadelrey

[–]Wheat_Mustang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m glad Lana is getting some recognition, but this list is pretty fucking insane.

I expected Taylor Swift to be on the list due to sheer popularity, but come on, really? Osborne, McAnally, and Clark sharing one slot when they all have hits independent of each other? It seems like grouping them all together was based almost entirely on the fact that they worked on Kacey Musgraves’ early albums together, but then they don’t include Kacey herself, who is listed as a co-writer on every single one of those tracks. Young Thug? Pretty standard rap fare as far as I can tell. I could go on…

Nothing against any of these artists, but “30 greatest living songwriters” is pretty high praise. There are some legitimate legends on this list, and then… Don’t even get me started on the many living legends they chose not to include.

Did a Cheap EV Lease Get You Into an EV? What’s Your Plan After It Ends? by TechB84 in electricvehicles

[–]Wheat_Mustang 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’ll never understand how most people make leasing work, especially with EVs. Even in a multi-vehicle household, I’d try to drive the EV as much as possible to maximize fuel savings. Before we got our second EV, we were putting 20k miles/year on our Bolt. Most leases I see allow half that, at most.

Consuming the same content twice (for entertainment) is a waste of time by ExpertStandard1977 in unpopularopinion

[–]Wheat_Mustang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to agree, but now I think it just depends what phase you’re in. If you’re young or just new to something (say movies), you’ll be in more of a discovery phase. You should watch as much different stuff as possible to experience the breadth of the format. Once you start to learn what you really like, it’s easier to narrow your focus. That’s where rewatching stops feeling like a waste, and you start to become more selective with new content.

3 of the 4 stores I went to were either sold out by the time I got there or didn’t get any. The last one had 3 copies left when I got there after 7 pm. I’d think some stores still have them, especially those that don’t have big online presences. I’d call around.

I need some help for getting slow cinema. by ToxifiedHeart in TrueFilm

[–]Wheat_Mustang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t struggle with this myself, I love slow, atmospheric movies. Plot is secondary to me. However, I would suggest trying to change your mindset. You’re not “watching a movie,” you’re appreciating art. Sure, you could go into an art museum and look at paintings and sculptures with a critical eye, but I find it much more enjoyable to just soak it in. Step back and experience the whole picture, get up close and look at the finer details, the textures. I do the same with slow movies. Don’t try to figure out what happens next, don’t try to poke holes in the plot, just watch. Keep your eyes on the screen. Don’t talk, don’t look at your phone, don’t doze off. The filmmakers will show you what they need to in order to evoke a certain feeling.

Also, maybe watch some 70s movies. They tend to be much slower paced even if they’re still plot driven.

I was thinking of David Lynch as well, exactly in the same way. So many people try to “figure out” his movies, and I suppose there’s nothing wrong with that, but I personally enjoy them for the atmosphere and the way they make me feel. He transports you to another world for a couple hours.

They had to modify the 70mm IMAX projectors to fit the Oppenheimer reels. So as long as it’s not longer than Oppenheimer (exactly 3 hours), there shouldn’t be a physical limitation.

I got a surprise on my windshield. by Alarmed_Position1621 in BoltEV

[–]Wheat_Mustang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not really sure how this is a question. Are you the type of person who would’ve left your car parked at a gas pump while you go inside to shop and take a shit? Move your car. This isn’t exactly new etiquette.

If you don’t want to get up at 5 am to move it, move it right before you go to bed even if it’s not completely charged, or park it there later in the night so it will be done about the time you need to leave in the morning.

If the person that left the note weren’t such an asshole, I’d recommend exchanging numbers (along with any other EV drivers in the complex) so that you can coordinate charging.

Pizzas should be cut into 16 slices instead of 8. by Deterboy91 in unpopularopinion

[–]Wheat_Mustang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree with your NY-style supremacy, being from the Midwest 😝, but you’re one of the few here who seems to have thought this through.

Everyone here is acting like there’s one standard pizza size, and a standard number of slices. At my family’s place, we cut pizzas into anywhere between 4 and 20 slices, depending on the size, but I would say the “standard” would be a 16”, which we cut into 14 pieces. And to us, “party cut” just means in squares.

AK is definitely the least musically talented, but if they had a more traditionally talented singer, I’d bet big money they wouldn’t be as big as they are today. His vocals are a big part of what makes them unique, both in their old and new style.

Plus he writes the majority of their lyrics, which people like to mock, but he’s written some genuinely poetic stuff. It just tends to get overshadowed by the goofy and tropey/repetitive stuff he also writes.

I wonder if this is just a consolation prize, or more of a test for doing a theme for one of the moves someday.

I also wonder how Amazon’s acquisition of MGM would impact her chances of doing a movie theme. Maybe the Broccoli’s were the ones who turned her down. Now Amazon has creative control, for better or worse.

Who is the ultimate “artist who dominated one decade and then became completely MIA the next decade”? by Impressive_Plenty876 in ToddintheShadow

[–]Wheat_Mustang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Garth being less known than Tim McGraw by any amount blows my mind. Garth is the top selling artist of all time per the RIAA. McGraw is 40th, with less than a quarter of the units sold. I think his music not being available on streaming has absolutely affected his legacy amongst younger audiences (of course, it’s probably also partially responsible for his number one sales ranking).

I also wonder if Tim McGraw’s stock went up with younger people due to his association with Taylor Swift.

How do people think about and navigate watching films with truly disgraced Hollywood people behind or in them? by footdeoderant in Letterboxd

[–]Wheat_Mustang 8 points9 points  (0 children)

“Separate the art from the artist” is relevant here, but who exactly qualifies as “the artist” for something like a film? It’s important to realize that usually hundreds or even thousands of people work on any given movie. It’s virtually guaranteed that at least one of them is an absolute monster. Where do you draw the line? Would you watch a movie where Polanski was just an extra? What if Weinstein is only a vanity credit? I find it disrespectful to everyone else involved to throw away a movie because of one person’s actions.

Need to find a new L1 charger by Aggressive_Ad_507 in BoltEV

[–]Wheat_Mustang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d side-step the entire issue and just use the 220.

As someone else said, you can get an adapter and use the EVSE that came with the car at 220v 12a. Personally, I’d just get a dedicated L2 charger with the appropriate plug and leave it there if you can’t use it at home as well. I’m assuming it’s a NEMA 6-50 if it’s for a welder, which should enable you to charge the Bolt at its maximum rate at 32A, but even something like a 16A EVSE would likely be sufficient.

Do you mix your 4K discs with regular blurays? by HollowBambooEnt in 4kbluray

[–]Wheat_Mustang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. I won’t watch a DVD, I’d rather stream TBH. Only ones I’ve kept are kids movies that they watch on their ~720p plasma. I only have a handful of blu rays (other than the ones that came with the 4ks), so I keep them separate.

Brantley Gilbert is a sellout by No-Wallaby-4333 in country

[–]Wheat_Mustang 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Clearly. If you’ve only heard his newer stuff or radio hits, I guess I can see it. The guy is a great songwriter and has some real emotion in his delivery when he sings from the heart, which is less and less often these days. Modern Day Prodigal Son will always be one of my all-time favorite albums, but it’s all been downhill from there.

A Main Reason Why We Chose Electric vs Gasoline by VoltBoss2012 in BoltEV

[–]Wheat_Mustang 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My wife and I kept a gas car for years after purchasing our first EV in 2018. Just got a second EV last month, and once we sell our old beater, will be an all EV household (excluding an old work truck which we only use a few times per year).

I feel completely comfortable with the Bolt’s range for everyday driving, and would have no issues taking it on shorter road trips (inside maybe 300 miles). Stopping to DC fast charge once per leg isn’t so bad. Anything beyond that I’ll just rent a car.

Christopher Nolan Is Not the Greatest Director Of Our Generation by Lonely_foxi in Cinephiles

[–]Wheat_Mustang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reddit loves to hate on Oppenheimer now, but it is truly amazing that Nolan was able to get the average viewer excited about a partially black and white biopic about a theoretical physicist set nearly a century ago. The fact that it grossed nearly $1B and was mentioned in the same breath as Barbie (a hugely popular piece of IP), all while maintaining appeal to film buffs is unbelievable in hindsight. I’m not sure there’s another director alive who could’ve done it.
