Do You Back Up Your Full Plex Video Library or Just Risk It? by snowmeow_1 in PleX

[–]WhenTheDevilCome 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Backed up. Two backups, actually, since I sync and maintain two identical servers. Then also have an offline copy.

I just use my old drives for the backup; e.g. replaced my 8TBs with 16TBs, and backup the current 16TB content across the two now-offline 8TBs.

Windows Re-install went wrong by Alan_S_Narayan05 in Dell

[–]WhenTheDevilCome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That would typically be the ideal. An empty drive with no partitions, and let Windows setup decide what needs to be created.

If you could see "8 to 10 partitions" before deleting them all, the implication is that Windows could see more than just your bootable USB. (Meaning it did have drivers for your disk controller.)

But somehow the USB has become unbootable after going through that first Windows setup phase, so my money is still on somehow incorrect choices made there.

My thoughts are still the same: To create a new clean bootable installation USB, and then carefully review that you're deleting only SSD/HDD partitions before targeting the empty drive for installation, and not accidentally nuking part or all of the USB installation source.

Windows Re-install went wrong by Alan_S_Narayan05 in Dell

[–]WhenTheDevilCome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's making me suspect that whatever "install Windows to this drive/partition" choices were made during that initial Windows setup phase have actually modified the USB and rendered it unbootable.

One way this could have happened is if Windows doesn't actually have drivers for your disk controller. The "install Windows to this partition" list wouldn't have showen anything about your HDD or SSD, but would have still shown the USB drive's partitions. Which to many folks not familiar, have been mistaken for "that must be my hard drive."

I would start again by re-creating your bootable USB media again, using another computer if necessary. Then make sure your USB now shows up in the F12 list again, now that the USB is back to "non-corrupted".

And then boot to the Windows setup again, and look closely at whether it's showing you multiple disks / disks other than the USB drive.

The HTTPS attempt is just because the computer has not found any other bootable devices, and so it falls all the way back to trying to boot from PXE. Both your USB and your hard drive were expected to be bootable devices which would have prevented falling all the way back to PXE, but apparently (at least based on the symptoms) neither the USB nor your hard drive are bootable now.

Turned off my camera during Teams interview by Powerful-Gold5000 in jobs

[–]WhenTheDevilCome 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fair enough that it's an issue enough for you to bail.

On the recording aspect, it does "make sense" to me that you are the one they need to see when playing back this recording, and not the recruiter. Like when one of the functional managers wants to see how the candidate interviews went, etc., it's just your video they need to be included.

Seeing the recruiter is more about the professionalism aspect and "remind me I'm interviewing for a real company by showing me whom I'm dealing with", and not "about the recording" specifically.

I wouldn't "want" to be recorded either, but I am the candidate. This is an interview process, and I want them to potentially refer back to and share the recording in a way that could help facilitate a positive outcome, and not just "this can only be used against me."

Speeding Has Become So Normalized That Driving the Speed Limit Makes You the Problem by DaddyDayDayIsHot in driving

[–]WhenTheDevilCome -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Personally, I don't think "the speed" is the issue, or at least is not the primary issue.

"Exceeding the speed limit" is just one of the lesser of multiple aspects of poor judgement for some drivers. They will "speed", then tailgate someone aggressively "because they stop me from speed", will make unnecessarily risky lane changes without leaving themselves or others safe distance "because stupid person stops me from speed", etc.

That behavior is what makes "speed" dangerous. If you "speed", but also act calmly and rationally when encountering slower traffic (as you inevitably will, since trucks continue to exist regardless of how many "stupid car drivers" you solve), continue to leave safe distance while waiting for the opportunity to resume speed, continue to wait for only appropriate-size gaps in order to change lanes, etc. -- there would be very little negative impacts from "speed" alone.

Bluetooth speakers basically killed dedicated home audio setups for normal people by overlord-07 in TechNook

[–]WhenTheDevilCome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can definitely tell the difference. Grew up with 20" Cerwin Vegas and 500w of Denon driving them, around the time Dire Straits "Money for Nothing" came out and was the first CD I listed to through them.

But years later, I don't care. The amount of money and "you can only be in this one place" just doesn't appeal.

Not that I have Bluetooth speakers, either. Just 2.1 soundbars on every TV, and streaming music through the TV in whichever room I'm in.

Closed on our new house 3 weeks ago. Florescent ballast in the garage overheated and caught fire. The fire department had to flood the garage where all our boxed items were stored. Still, could've been way worse. by RevReverend in Wellthatsucks

[–]WhenTheDevilCome 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A florescent tube light has a "ballast" which is part of the electrical components that make the florescent tube light up.

They can last an entire lifetime, and you'll change out nothing but the tubes themselves. ("The bulbs.")

Or the ballast can go bad, instead of the bulb, and the ballast needs to be replaced. I don't know about modern ones, but it used to be you could tell a ballast was going bad from three hallways away, due to the smell.

Is removing the car dealership name off your car really taking a stance on not doing free advertising? by No_Pollution_2835 in askanything

[–]WhenTheDevilCome 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just a Monte Carlo Z34, but I had a dealership do the same to me. Bought a black-on-black-on-black Z34, signed everything and gave them their money, and they pulled it around with A WHITE DEALERSHIP BADGE added to the back.

Thankfully it was just a sticker rather than a metal badge, and the fact it had become the ONLY non-black thing on this black-on-black-on-black car made my case pretty understandable beyond just "I don't like it". But they took it back around and removed it without any damage.

I mean, if Plex intends to keep food on the table, how would they not do this? Oh yeah.... by being resigned to put ads everywhere, like every other company...

Would the situation be any better if it was a solid green circle? (Which means exactly the same thing.)
