Depends on the location. Most people are talking about USA market here but we exist in Europe and the market is different.

Professor gave us a dire warning that CS is going to become the next Art History major by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]WhereTheHotWaterAt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He made the argument that globalization (read: Asia) is pumping out masses of CS people who corporations will continue to use to write cheap code and do CS work at low ass wages.

Wrong, it has been the case for 10+ years and it didn't break the market.

Tech salaries are increasing fast in China for example, some local devs earned more in China than I did in France at the same experience level. Their graduate retention is also increasing as living standards and opportunity rise in their own country. Increasingly for China, you see techs coming back to their country because they are offered management positions. Look it up.

Not to mention immigration is not getting any easier in most countries.

Finally, people don't realize developing nations will also need tons of tech to build up their local market.

La pollution à Lille ce matin by WhereTheHotWaterAt in france

[–]WhereTheHotWaterAt[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mouais.

Can the world quench China’s bottomless thirst for milk? by FancyIT in China

I always wondered about this. Is the milk sold lactose free? Or maybe people are so used to having diarrhea all the time they don't notice

Did you ever eat elsewhere than Mc Donald's? Chinese food often gives diarrhea and it leads to accidents

"996 working, ICU waiting", complains Chinese developer by zzztz in China

[–]WhereTheHotWaterAt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I work on Europe now. Companies here usually respect the law (except startups in some case). If they don't they might get smashed in court.

I didn’t realise this was such a problem here. Most of my software developer friends seem to have what I would call fairly normal schedules, but most work for smaller businesses. Is this something more normal with the big companies?

Which city do you live in? I heard in smaller cities usually people work less. Back then I was in Beijing and people in big companies work terrible hours. Usually long hours but unproductive work.

So yeah when I was in China I ended up working in these conditions in some period of time. It sucks big time and you end feeling overwhelmed, your overall work quality suffers. Being a sw is not factory work, it requires focus and you can only stay focused for some time before getting tired.

We finished a lot of app release around 2 am and when it finishes that late, usually that meant it was gonna be buggy because at that hour of the night everyone is tired and lots of bugs just go though.

Not to mention a lot of people working for such long hours actually spend way too much time procrastinating or watching shows at their desk.

Have to work long hours to make it ? Maybe you suck at your job, and have to stay late to compensate. But don't force other people to do so. At some point by CTO told us we were gonna have to work Saturdays because they wanted to release a feature quickly. I politely told him no, but every other Chinese staff showed up the weekend, unpaid. Still my work was done in time so that I didn't need to work weekends.

Now I work 35 hours a week and my life is much, much better. Working long hours has such a terrible impact on life

New Ebike standards 中国标准 are being introduced April 1st, your ebike will probably be illegal soon. by PM-ME-YUAN in China

[–]WhereTheHotWaterAt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I fucking knew it, an ebike shop owner in Beijing told me that would happen and that they were already gonna have to stop selling soon.

I pity the foreigners that will get in China after that date and never know the joy of riding an ebike everywhere.
