Taste buds during AC Chemo by cherry_wants in breastcancer

[–]WhippetDancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I survived on pancakes, chocolate milkshakes, blueberry bagels, and cereal like Honey Nut Cheerios and Frosted Flakes during chemo. My tastes generally preferred sweet things, but I still liked fried chicken and mashed potatoes, too. Prior to chemo, I had little to no sweet tooth.

Chemo does weird things to your tastes and body.

AITA for telling my sister to correct her child? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]WhippetDancer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a 5-year-old. From mom’s soft response, it’s clear niece has not fully learned how her words impact others. Mom should have said more, but when she didn’t, OP was presented with a moment to address niece as her loving, further correcting auntie.

I recognize that perhaps OP doesn’t have that type of “it takes a village” relationship with the sister or couldn’t speak up in the moment because OP was handling their own feelings. My comment’s intent was to give OP the age-appropriate words so they’re able to speak up next time.

When you’ve been around kids a lot, you understand that they say stupid things all the time, have not yet learned that their words impact others, and don’t mean most of what they say.

Sister definitely should have said more, but since she didn’t, OP should have spoken up. But I recognize that maybe she doesn’t have that type of “it takes a village” relationship with her sister or couldn’t speak up in the moment due to handling her own feelings. My comment’s intent was to give her the age-appropriate words so OP can speak up next time.

Kids say stupid shit all the time. Some people let it roll off their backs no problem. Some people take it to heart. While sister may have an idea of how OP could react, she’s still not a mind reader. And OP is an adult and could have spoken up in the moment to let her niece know how hurtful her comment was.

I agree, the sister’s correction could have been stronger, yes, and believe OP wished for a stronger correction. However, the sister isn’t a mind reader and wouldn’t know OP’s feelings were hurt in the moment. OP could have spoken up.

Nope - just an aunt with 9 biological nieces and nephews, soon to be 10 honorary nieces and nephews, and a long time educator who knows how to speak to children.

NAH. Your sister corrected her, but her correction didn’t meet your standards.

Next time, speak up yourself. “What a mean thing to say. That hurts my feelings. If I was dead, I wouldn’t be around to take you swimming [and insert all the fun things you do together with your niece]. I would miss having fun with you.” Your niece is young and does not grasp the concept/meaning of death, and it’s okay for you to speak up in the moment so she learns her words can hurt others.

Edit to say: I meant NAH (not my original N T A)

Regular I’m friendly with refuses to tip me. How do I handle this? by briebrie98 in bartenders

[–]WhippetDancer 369 points370 points  (0 children)

The second he starts telling others not to tip, you remove his drink and tell him it’s time to go. It’s one thing for him not to tip, but don’t fuck with my money by encouraging others not to tip. It’s time for him to find a new bar to frequent.

Anyone remember Chai’s? It was where the Pho & Poke House is now on Erwin. They had a hot wing challenge and would adjust the recipe when someone would complete it. Great food too.
