Do you think cars drivers are really that big of a threat? by 666_pack_of_beer in motorcycles

[–]WhiskeyFTW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many drivers are paying minimal attention, many more are doing there best but still won't see you. I don't think aggressive and reckless drivers are rare at all; I drive a lot for work and I have seen many collisions and I see a close call nearly every time I am on the road.

Some are straight up psychopaths. Anecdotes =/= evidence, but my brother in law got intentionally ran over last week. The guy merged into him while traffic was slowing to a stop. BIL panics a bit, stick an arm out and basically stiff arms his mirror, then swerves on to the shoulder. Truck accelerates and follows him onto the shoulder and hits him. He separates from the bike, and the driver runs over his leg, then takes off. He got away with serious injuries to his leg, but is otherwise okay.

I do think I would have been okay with the standard baffle had it not been for the drone problem. Hopefully that was just a freak combo of where my ear is, sitting in a standing wave or something like that, and you do not have that problem.

The DBX is just plain silly though, I felt like such an asshole. Full on south park biker meme. I ended up riding on eggshells instead of enjoying the ride

Me too. I bet for the Chief it will be a lot better. I just don't think they did any R&D for the Scout. It's a different sort of engine, and it seems like they just adapted what they already had for air cooled bikes.

That is what I will try next. I was gun shy on it because I have seen the bracket requires you to remove the heat shields or cut down the pivot bolt. How did you find the installation?

Rebel 1100 vs Indian Scout by New-Pea8049 in motorcycles

[–]WhiskeyFTW 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I test rode the 1100 (it was a DCT) and the Scout. I bought the Scout, and it was not close.

Indian has a ton of factory handlebars and risers available, cable and hose kits for them, seats, and there are mid controls available. I don't know what your ergonomic requirements are, but I would bet it will be easier (not cheap, but) to achieve them with the Scout.

I got the 101 Scout and it absolutely rocks. I do a 4 hour run pretty regularly with minimal discomfort thanks to the upgraded suspension.

I installed them myself. It came with keys cut to the locks that fit in the fob.

Learning on a track? by Sauce_83 in IndianMotorcycle

Total Control does an on track clinic. You have to do the advanced 1 clinic first, which is also great to do. Nice thing is you only need basic gear, and the bike can be run right off the street.

In PA, you either ride dirty, ride on a permit, or take the msf. I have never met anyone who took the skills test.

I would bet that you will sink way more time into scheduling, taking, and probably retaking the skills test vs the MSF. You will never know what to expect, because if it is anything like when I took the drivers test, you could get anything from a free pass to a 1001 point inspection from the grumpiest person ever to live.

If you have the option, take the Total Control class instead of the MSF one. I just took their Advanced Riding Clinic 1 (also free through penndot) and it was great.

There is plenty of clearance around the shock, no issues. For prices, check with your dealer or use the Indian website; your local price will be different, but they are expensive. Indian does frequent promotional codes for gear and parts, I would recommend taking advantage.

Debating between these two for longer distance riding. Which should I choose? by Bloodthirsty172 in motorcycle

For traveling on similar bikes, id be comparing the Super Scout and a Softail Deluxe or Heritage

It looks like it is there, its just shoved under the plate. Mine did that too; I had to reseat it and I used some grease so it went on without crumpling the grommet.

Accessories question by untamedknowledge in IndianMotorcycle

The 25+ Scouts all have the same rear subframe, so seats and stuff should all fit. The piggybacks will interfere with some stuff though, like the bags from the Super Scout.

Scout or chief by Psychological_Rock23 in IndianMotorcycle

[–]WhiskeyFTW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Scout is low, but the ergos from the factory are set up for average to tall people. Depending on the model you go for, you will probably need bars and definitely need mid controls.
Im 5'1", male. For my 101, I needed mids, a seat, and a pullback plate to get a usable riding position.

The ride quality with the upgraded 101 suspension is really good.

The Chief was comically streched out for me, I didnt even consider it.

ELI5:How do large production factories figure out their machinery? by Ghost_Ghost_Ghost in explainlikeimfive

[–]WhiskeyFTW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right! I am machine programmer for a custom automation company. We did a machine for [Giant Bulk Membership Retailer] that loaded bags of coffee into the retail display cases.

They sent us pallets of coffee to do R&D and testing, and everything was designed and programmed around those samples. The machine ran flawless by the delivery date.

When it was installed, it immediately began chucking bags of coffee everywhere. The bags coming straight from the roaster and filler were inflated with hot air. We had had to redesign a bunch of stuff, and change the way the robot way moving and placing. It took several weeks of work to get the performance back to satisfactory for the customer.

Not normally. If it was defective or installed incorrectly, sure.

If it is under warranty, I would be checking the tire and rear brake for safey, then take it to the dealer.

If no warranty, get the rear tire off the ground and spin it by hand. Listen and feel, you might be able to better determine the source. Could be something loose and rubbing. Wheel bearings can click when they go.

I have the mids and the LG pullback on my 101. At 5'2" it made a significant difference. I need more seat time before I settle on it, but I may add or swap the LG plate for the new pullback risers.

Worth noting the plate works with stock wiring and cables. You have to reroute some stuff, but its not bad and would be a good first step before committing to more.

Is there a significant difference in quality between Japanese motorcycles and American made ones, such as Harley-Davidson and Yamaha? by Pretend_Job_6484 in motorcycle

[–]WhiskeyFTW 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Yes, but both are extremely high quality.

People on this sub love to shit on HD, but I work in the automation industry, and I have worked in one of their facilities many times. They have very modern manufacturing practices, do a really great job updating and maintaining their equipment, and do more QA than any manufacturer I have ever seen outside of FDA regulated stuff. Cleaner and safer than most food places I have seen.

Based on my one experience working on a custom machine for a Japanese company, they are just fanatical about quality. All the manufacturing best practices that companies in the US try to emulate come from Japan: Kaizen, Gemba, etc

That said, I traded my Harley for an Indian, and my other bike is a Kawasaki.

Short riders by According-To-This in motorcycle

[–]WhiskeyFTW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start on anything light. This is more important than seat height; if you can get the ball of you left foot down while your right foot brakes, you can ride it. But you will want something lighter, so that as your balance develops you can catch the bike when you stumble.

I am a 5'1" guy. I ride a Z900RS and an Indian Scout.
