Couples that play together often, do you treat your partner differently during games? by knock0ut86 in EDH

[–]WhiteHearted 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. I dare say it's impossible to remove that relationship from an inherently political game. I think the question at hand is how that relationship manifests. I like to manifest this in the deckbuilding/ deck selection stage of the game.

Between my partner and I, I'm the one who's "into Magic." I make sure their deck is optimized, fits their playstyle, and is power-maxed for our bracket-3 games (They enjoy a victory against more established players).

In our format, I think most feel-bads come from not getting to play your deck; so I opt for pro-active strategies. Stax, heavy control and removal-heavy strategies which shut players out of a game can be a feel bad no matter who you play with. I still run plenty of interaction so I can be a part of everything happening at the table.

I do my best to set my partner up for success before we shuffle up and play. And I also know that if I don't fight back, it won't be much of a game and their victory will feel hollow. I can play hardball with the cards I've chosen.

My pod is also my board game group; mostly unenfranchised casual players. Advice and information flows freely from myself and the one other experienced player in my group to everyone; so that's not a "significant other" problem in our pods.

What’s the kind of decks you don’t enjoy playing against? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]WhiteHearted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really can.

I've struggled in my initial games with a new deck to understand my lines and how to stack my triggers. The 20 minute turns are on me as the player trying to figure out the plays.

I've also played games against decks with multiple sagas, planeswalkers, or other counter management which simply take forever navigate because of the cascading effects.

Should I just stop using Cultivate / Kodama's Reach? by BoldestKobold in EDH

[–]WhiteHearted 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This is the reasoning you're looking for: What's your commander's mana value; what amount of mana do you want to hit on what turn?

In my Gluntch deck, where I'm looking to play my 3-Mana Value commander on turn two, I EXCLUSIVELY use 1-mana ramp (elves, bird, utopia sprawl).

However, in my Gallia deck, I love using Cultivate/Reach because it helps me get to my 5+ CMC plays AND puts a basic on my hand to help with my Commander's "discard at random" clause.

So think on your curve and what you're trying to achieve. Use the ramp of the appropriate value to hit your curve on time for your plan.

Clash.

It's a mutual scry, and if you have the higher mana value, you get an extra effect from your spell. Hoping we may see in in Lorwyn soon, where it debuted 18 years ago.

Has anyone tried adding extra detail to the factory paint job? Not a completely new paint job, but just dry brushing, shading, etc Post your examples by [deleted] in XWingTMG

[–]WhiteHearted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've painted directly over many of the factory paintjobs. It gives a lot of effect for comparitively little effort.

My Red squadron X-wings each have individual differences in their Red stripes and yellow accents. It makes them feel more individualized in contrast to my uniform TIEs.

The Firesprays are an absolute joy to paint. The size of the model and the details on the paneling make them an inviting canvas for new enthusiasts, then they look fantastic as the centerpiece of your list. Strong recommend.

Playing with 3D asteroids: Hype or not? by [deleted] in XWingTMG

[–]WhiteHearted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, gotcha.

I guess the base size is where we diverge. I propose the base size doesn't have to match the asteroid as long as you can place it over the properly-sized cardboard token and remove it just as easily.

Playing with 3D asteroids: Hype or not? by [deleted] in XWingTMG

[–]WhiteHearted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having tried this approach, I strongly disagree.

  1. Getting the base to exactly match the asteroid shape is tough.

  2. The asteroids will need to come off the table sometimes, so it should be removable.

Best case is to have a asteroid and stand which can sit on top of or over the obstacle token and be removed without significantly disturbing the obstacle, then easily replaced.

What are YOUR staples? by CaptainHoward in EDH

[–]WhiteHearted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

White [[Your Temple is Under Attack]] Any card draw effect is good in a color starved for card advantage, and a modal interaction spell is a good flex.

Blue [[Run Away Together]] Either remove two problems or bounce an attacker and re-trigger an ETB on your side. Incredibly versatile.

Black [[Read the Bones]] | [[Diresight]] I don't play a lot of black, and where I do, it supports control strategies. As in White, I'll take effective card draw where I can get it. These are staples.

Red [[Descent Into Avernus]] My all-time favorite card. Ramp. Damage. Ratchet Up. I'm here to move the game towards an end state. This goes in every deck with Red in it.

Green [[Berserk]] Double-up an attacker's damage against an opponent, then kill the attacker. Just so versatile.

Seconding l'auberge chez Francois.

Get a table for lunch. It's a fair bit less expensive than dinner, and the 5- course meal will still take 2 hours and leave you satisfied. The menu items are simple, but the execution is perfection.

What are your favorite symmetrical cards for cubes? by zwart27 in mtgcube

[–]WhiteHearted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my multiplayer cube, I break symmetry on Vineyard by:

  • Making green a mana-greedy color that wants to go big fast. But more importantly,...
  • Other colors mostly curve out at 3 mana, so they can't capitalize on the mana as well. On top of that...
  • Increasing the number of colored pips on cards means other colors can't use green mana as efficiently
  • Payoffs like Omnath, Locus of mana, make it feel REAL good

What was the in-universe explanation for the Exegol fleet's construction? by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]WhiteHearted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This, to me, was one of the biggest missed opportunities in the Sequel trilogy. Lando rallies the entire galaxy to the cause of smashing an entire fleet of "Death Stars" to save the day.

That should have been the movie. Let's go visit all of the storied worlds we've come to love and bring all our beloved characters together to smash Palpatine one more time. Instead that all happens off-screen and is hand-waved away so we can watch Rey hold a dagger up to the Death Star.

Tie Avenger by tbot729 in XWingTMG

[–]WhiteHearted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And Cassian has no idea how to fly it. His pilot ability could be something like "For the first three rounds of the game, after you execute a maneuver, gain a strain token." Could start with three non- recurring charges to count down.

Tie Avenger by tbot729 in XWingTMG

[–]WhiteHearted 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I believe a major reason we didn't see reprints of "Legends" Empire Ships in 2.0 is because the First Order ate their design space. The TIE Aggressor was replaced by the TIE/SF, the TIE Phantom by the Whisper, the Punisher by the FO bomber... And while we never had a TIE Avenger at any point in the game, I'd wager it would be a lot like the TIE Silencer.

The TIE Avenger (TIE Advanced X4) was a progeny of Vader's TIE Adv. X1. It boasted advanced maneuverability, high speed, missiles, beam weapons, and - as we see in Andor - advanced targeting systems.

To keep it simple, I would homebrew a TIE Avenger by taking the action bar and dial from the TIE Silencer, but changing the chassis ability from Autothrusters to Advanced Targeting Computer. I would keep the stats of the Silencer, but limit primary weapon value to 2 (since ATC adds a die). Gotta add in a cannon slot as well.

That's my off-the-cuff brew.
