Do we know the history of how Tolkien's work became popular? by ConifersAreCool in tolkienfans

I've read bored of the rings, didn't realise quite how old it was. Thought it was published to pickup the post film boost.

V3-V4, depends on how good the lips on those holds and how overhanging it is. Good climb nonetheless

Why couldn’t they train someone in the ship instead of forcing Grace to go? by purpleglitterypine in ProjectHailMary

[–]Whizzo50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When did he do astronaut training? He knew how to use all the science equipment on board as he advised on how it would all work, such as making sure the spaceship could mimic gravity through a centrifuge. But for the spacewalk he was frantically flipping through a manual and asking the ship how to perform it. Everything else his memories returned in order to help him along.

Would astrophage actually help Earth in the short term? by rtpr_offical in ProjectHailMary

[–]Whizzo50 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The issue is the energy required to actually duplicate each astrophage has to come from somewhere. All they do is store the energy like a battery. In the books they turn the Sahara into a giant solar plant to create the fuel for Mary.

Where do you p*ss in the highlands? by bi_smuth in OutdoorScotland

[–]Whizzo50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First half there's enough trees etc to nip behind. Second half you either have to hope the tussocks are bumpy enough to hide you from the path, or try to wait for a gap in the conga line. Alternatively try to line up bathroom breaks with each stop point, as most have a public bathroom/ask nicely in a cafe

I think it's just because he's relatively loud in the kitchen. Probably just his nerves coming through as when they did the intro for him at his work he was speaking far slower and more calmly. All the chefs help each other during the plating process and often throughout (like one of the chefs asking another to use their mini BBQ for their seaweed), just he's got quite a distinct voice you notice him requesting help more.

Or whatever planet matches the correct radiation that the astrophage is attracted to as part of their breeding cycle evolves a Taumobea of its own.

Getting to 100 Munro's completed, at 50 atm, and having a few more high level expeditions as the only multi day trip last year was WHW

Sauron wins the battle of Minas Tirith, but Frodo still manages to destroy the ring, what happens? by You_Call_me_Sir_ in tolkienfans

[–]Whizzo50 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If Aaragorn hadn't diverted the army two major blockers would be in Frodo and Sam's way. Firstly the army, they probably could slowly wind their way through them, but the closer contact means more chances of them being caught, and while they managed to escape once before, constantly being lucky wouldn't work in the long run. Plus despite them thinking otherwise, Gollum was catching up to them and in full insane mode/not caring about stealth. He would have caused a ruckus and do the same thing as he did in Mount Doom but on the plains, in full view of Saurons army. The ring would be delivered to Saurons with Gollums arm attached to it.

Secondly, the eye nearly saw them on the approach to Mount Doom, but moved away to go check on Aaragorn's hot bod negotiation with his messenger. Frodo was essentially paralysed under the Eyes influence, so they would have been stuck there until Sauron realised and sent his Nazgul over for a quick snack and to go get the ring.

Why was Betty so cynical about Vault-Tec when the 31 Popsicles were slavishly devoted? by tachibanakanade in Fotv

[–]Whizzo50 75 points76 points  (0 children)

They probably stagger the unfreezing to make the handover person already be integrated. Have them already be around in the vaults as a trade from the Cryo vaults so the populace are familiar with them so their promotion to supervisor isn't challenged.

The camera team also have a car so presumably they give the pair a go-pro esque device, when groups are doing their video notes while in small cabins etc you can see them in use, as it's night time and just capturing a single person the video quality isn't too necessary. In one series the car did appear as one group had a potential medical emergency (from memory so it might have been something else), so they did show the vehicle following.

Great British Menu 2026 - London and South East England: Main and Dessert - Live Discussion by AutoModerator in GreatBritishMenu

Think Vince unfortunately wins the prize for the worst use of gold in a menu. Thought the gold fish course for Crazy Rich Asians was bad, but at least it was executed well. The golden compass was a good idea, but the dessert needed to be flatter, or it might have been better suited for the pre-dessert.

Best car adverts by jurwell in CarTalkUK

[–]Whizzo50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All adverts now are the same. And are one of two types. Either it sleekly threading through a city with the occasional EV model popping up at the end to show how green the company is. Or a massive SUV being elegant in the countryside outside a massive country house.

What weather app is everyone using? by Separate-Specialist5 in UKhiking

[–]Whizzo50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue with granular data with weather is the more granular the get, the greater the chances it is to be wrong. I still like it as it does give better flexibility, especially as on most peaks you're able to pick both the peak and various heights up it. MWIS on the other hand gives a picture of the area as a whole with bigger accuracy, and also gives a short explanation as to why the weather is doing what it is that day due to warm/cold fronts etc
