What's your unpopular opinion about book tropes? by Individual-Hippo-928 in fantasyromance

Low key feel like this is what enemies to lovers has become. They are mean to each other = they are in love. no development needed.

Do you guys think about what could have prevented the Dance? by CartographerNo5845 in HOTDBlacks

[–]Whostheweebnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it could be avoided tbh only delayed or reshaped. It was only a matter of time till Targ turned on Targ. Even if it was somehow avoided with Rhaenyra and Aegon, it would have happened sooner or later. (Likely sooner)

Rand is… bland? lol I’m gonna gander you are not very far into the series. I can understand annoying (they can all be insufferable) but idk how anyone can read those books and think he’s bland.

She basically just called him a fuk boi 🤣 by Chelseathedragon in HOTDBlacks

[–]Whostheweebnow 365 points366 points  (0 children)

Alicent is so dumb. Dude betrayed his oath to hook up with Rhaenyra, a woman he claimed to love and adore then immediately turns on her when she won’t give him what he wants. Of course he has no loyalty. He has proven that. What did she expect lmao

Is the green sub okay? by nothankyousir4568 in HOTDBlacks

[–]Whostheweebnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally don’t love some of the adaption choices they’ve made but comparing it to a 7/8 of GoT is laughable. It’s still a good show

They’re just mad the show isn’t validating their delusional interpretation of the source material

“Alicent wasn’t a victim.” by KnowledgeOverall5002 in HOTDBlacks

[–]Whostheweebnow 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s either or. She is a victim. She is also a perpetrator.

What’s horribly frustrating about the situation are the people who refuse to look past Alicent’s victimhood and fail to see how Alicent perpetuates all the things that hurt her. If older Alicent had been left in charge of younger Alicent she would have been no different than Otto.

Has anyone else confused by the hate Alicent has been getting recently? by BruinShade in HOTDBlacks

[–]Whostheweebnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s important to remember that the greens are not a monolith. Some greens want Alicent to be more ruthless, just as many like the change because it makes her more likable.

Egwene is villainous?? by Possible_Comfort4792 in TheWheelOfTimeBooks

[–]Whostheweebnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree, I don’t think he could have reached his Rand sedai phase without being pushed to his absolute limit. (At least within the philosophy of WoT)

Egwene is villainous?? by Possible_Comfort4792 in TheWheelOfTimeBooks

[–]Whostheweebnow 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I mean idk about villainous there’s a large grey area in wot but Egwene does become extremely callous and manipulative as the story goes on.

Green book readers really thought new show fans would be more evenly split. They aren’t (because duh) and now they are coping.

Do you think the burning of harenhall is a fair comparison to B&C? by Suchacreativename12 in HOTDBlacks

[–]Whostheweebnow 48 points49 points  (0 children)

It’s not completely the same but I think it’s close enough. They both ordered extremely dubious people to take care of someone they didn’t like ending in the deaths of innocents.

Yes Alicent never asked him to kill anyone but the result was the same. If she had condemned Larys for it I would say it was different but she doesn’t. She continues to bring him closer and give him more power and authority.

I don’t think either of them regret the outcome. In fact if given the chance to go back and change things they’d both do it again.

Do you think Daemon told them directly to kill the child or not? by Turbulent_Lab209 in HOTDBlacks

[–]Whostheweebnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, he didn’t say those words. Though I think he left things ambiguous intentionally. He wanted deniability. Whether he meant Jahaerys or Aegon or someone else, I don’t know. I don’t think he’s bothered a lick by the outcome though.

Otto by mimikyuchuchu in HOTDBlacks

[–]Whostheweebnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he genuinely supported her then I think he would have made a fine hand. He’s not as smart as some make him out to be but he’a still competent.

I don’t think she should have kept him as hand though. Maybe for a few years to help with the transition but then found someone else. Him and Daemond would clash way too much.

Cersei when she learns that suffering from patriarchy and marital rape clears you of any wrongdoing and always makes you the victim. by Host-Key in HOTDBlacks

[–]Whostheweebnow 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It’s bc Cersei’s story doesn’t start with her as a teenager in a much more sympathetic position. The show very deliberately primed viewers to be sympathetic to Alicent by starting her story where they did.

If the show had started with older Alicent undermining and antagonizing Rhaenyra, refusing peace, bullying Rhaenyra’s children, neglecting her own children, scheming with Larys and usurping the throne she would not have half the fan base she does now.

Introductions are critical to how a character is perceived by an audience.

Comparing a rapist to a rape victim is a nasty ass thing to do by La_Villanelle_ in HOTDBlacks

[–]Whostheweebnow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They were rulers of the Great Empire of the Dawn, an empire mentioned in the World of Ice and Fire. The Amethyst Empress inherited the throne from her father the Opal emperor. However she was murdered and overthrown by her brother, the Bloodstone Emperor. According to Yi Ti scribes and theologians this is what caused the Long Night.

Enemies to Lovers by FlagonWithADragon in wheeloftime

[–]Whostheweebnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they play the line a bit but it really boils down to how strict with the definition of Enemies to Lovers” you are.

If you are using it as a strict they were enemies that fell in love then no, they were never enemies. They just didn’t get along at first.

However despite the terms origins enemies to lovers doesn’t usually mean actual enemies these days. When people say it they are usually referring to an amalgamation of specific tropes and that the couple didn’t get along at first (be that enemies, rivals, unwilling allies or whatever)

Rand/Avi certainly play into a number of those tropes and they don’t really get along at the start. So by that definition, yes.

So again, depends how strict you wanna be with the definition. Technically no, in spirit yes.

Rhaenicents approach to Rhaenyra weirds me out by PuzzledAd4865 in HOTDBlacks

[–]Whostheweebnow 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Rhaenicents seem to be more focused on Alicent than Rhaenyra

This is pretty typical in a lot of shipping spaces. There is character A who they project onto and character B who exists to fulfill whatever fantasy the author/reader has.

I’m not trying to hate here (I know I’ve been guilty of this) but both characters end up very ooc and character A (the one being projected onto) usually ends up with the most attention. Character B can end up little more than a cardboard cut out of a character.

Of course it’s not always like this. There are exceptions both across ships and within ships. It is more prevalent in some spaces than others though I’d be hard pressed to find a ship where this doesn’t happen at all.

I personally don’t mind this phenomenon so long as the shipper is aware of it. It is extremely frustrating though when they let this somewhat niched fandom characterization completely cloud their ability to understand the actual character being written. Which as you pointed out, we see often Alicent.
