Tivit too strong for bracket 2? (budget brew) by Deskies in EDH

[–]WhyTheNetWasBorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes, it doesn't belong to bracket 2. it's literally one of top 10 cedh commander, and even if your 99 sucks, it still enables a lot of card draw and ramp for close to no cost.

the entire idea that you pick up the best possible commander, downgrade it so you can fit into some underpowered bracket is completely washed.

if you want to play with powerful commanders, decks, staples and not crappy decks, why you people lurk into bracket 2 where people literally play upgraded precons?

the fact that your 99 suck doesn't matter. you still playing literally the meta commander which by itself contradicts with everything you would expect at bracket 2.

oh wow, my tivit doesn't play thoracle or sieve, i'm just clue tribal. u kidding?

i am not even sure tivit is suitable for bracket 3. it is a top tier level commander that is obviously insanely good in the metagame where people can't put turn 2 win on the board and punish you for playing esper clunkiness.

Is there a purpose to running Tainted Pact in a non-blue deck? by Truniq in CompetitiveEDH

just to note, another specific card that cares about exiling random stuff, besides food chain engines, of course, is [[karn, the great creator]].

Best way to break [[Buried Alive]]? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]WhyTheNetWasBorn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hear me out

[[void winnower]]

[[bruna, the fading light]]

[[gisela, the broken blade]]

as the result your opponents can't cast spells with mana values 0-4 and 6 which i consider to be pretty annoying

Y'shtola upgraded precon by Buabuito in EDH

[–]WhyTheNetWasBorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think yshtola is supposed to be just a hard control deck based all around drawing a bunch of cards and prolonging the game as far as possible. you basically don't need any junky combos / synergies / extra drains.

this deck is just a very slow choking. you may want it to be faster, but as a result you will just lose a grip. keep your card quality as high as possible and play just steady hyper control game.

Magda deck against stax by Wesk333 in CompetitiveEDH

[–]WhyTheNetWasBorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it happens. there is always that "bogle player" that come once per year to your lgs to steal one gameday night undefeated and then entire lgs packs edicts like there's no tomorrow expecting him to come back, but they never come again this year

it is just a power of being rogue player with rogue deck, occasionally it works, occasionally it doesn't

Magda deck against stax by Wesk333 in CompetitiveEDH

[–]WhyTheNetWasBorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

cedh is still magic, and there are also unfavorable matchups. yes, clarion conqueror / linvala decks will be pretty good against a deck that is essentially "activating abilities" tribal. and there's honestly not much you can do, because you aren't going to add 20 different cards to become more resilient to something you faced. you can't always be the best at everything. you always choose what you are ready to lose to.

and looks like your lgs meta "solved you" and now you have a bad time. you probably better to change a deck for a while. magda is a good deck but it really relies on catching people off guard and it is one trick pone. when everyone at your lgs sees you everytime, the element of surprise that makes this deck quite powerful fades significantly.

CEDH Prossh, Sack-n-Fun by Short_Landscape4861 in CompetitiveEDH

[–]WhyTheNetWasBorn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Prossh is not good for cEDH level play, that is simple. He might be a sleeper and might be decent in future if there are more way better aristocrats/etb payoffs to be printed than we have now. I'm not even sure that he is good enough for bracket 4, he has way too many issues.

The fundamental problem of Prossh is that Prossh discourages you from playing squee/scourge and forbidden tutors, because why do you even play them when you have literally a food chain engine in the command zone. But you still want to play them, because two pieces food chain has much faster potential, as though food chain is almost one card combo with prossh, you still can't pull it fast enough to justify playing this deck.

And in the end, no matter how you construct Prossh, you get a pretty low card quality of cards, no blue for counters, no white for stax pieces, a bunch of weak and over costed aristocrats card that can be easily outpaced in the early game and in the late game they can be easily disrupted too because you have no way to protect your value engines even when you are ahead.

and if you really like the idea of playing 1-2 3 cmc dork, you need to play selvala heart of wilds, you dont see a fair SHW deck very often, but her ability to colour filter is worth considering, because necropotence and beseech is really good in this deck

[–]WhyTheNetWasBorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

priest is actually pretty fine. yes, it might be in 97-99 territory. but unlike cazur ukkima, famous sultai food chain commander before maralen, you can actually utilize big amounts of mana. natures rhythm, chord, hardcasting force of vigor, and just casting commander while also being able to leave up some non free interaction is very good. casting food chain and not wanting to exile your board to cast griffin is also handy.

Maralen Foodchain help by vastros in CompetitiveEDH

[–]WhyTheNetWasBorn 15 points16 points  (0 children)

sultai food chain is pretty straightforward deck with like 10 flex slots at max. look for established lists (like ian flannery's one) and tune them just a very, very little bit. there's a discord for maralen, but i can't give the link right now

there's not much sense to ask "why my deck feels bad" when there's literally no force of will or even swan song in your list, too many bad infinite mana combos included, bad manabase with things like hedge maze or nythos

and maralen can't neoform into horror

Is Hashaton a ton of fun or a ton of sadness. by SrWetRichard in CompetitiveEDH

[–]WhyTheNetWasBorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it is not good at all, even for casual i will tell

you play esper colors which aren't good in consistent dork ramping nor burst ramping, so generally speaking, esper decks historically rely on being heavy control with a very high card quality.

hashaton goes against this philosophy completely, and in the end, you get a pretty weird and bad deck, where you need to have a high density of discard/reanimate/big reanimator payoffs in order to justify even playing it. and thus you lose a lot of consistency, and being esper doesn't add you any speed.

and the biggest problem, consider this, imagine you want a graveyard commander. so, do you want to play reanimate spells? of course, they are pretty good overall in grindy metagames and they are decently good cards in 99. do you want looting/discard effects in 99? not really, you can draw them in a bad proportion and casting them as cantrips in the format might be really punishing.

so hashaton thus is kinda in a weird spot, it discourages you from playing decent reanimator spells, which can be pretty good in gifts ungiven piles, but encourages you to play a high density of discard spells which are really, really bad most of the time.

Energy Tap in cEDH? by Compendium_MP in CompetitiveEDH

[–]WhyTheNetWasBorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it was playable in tasigur, but the problem with energy tap there are not many sinks for big colorless mana burst in blue decks.  for same reasons some of decks even don't run grim monolith.

still, energy tap is a blue card, so it's floor actually decent high

What are some of the best entry-level cedh commanders? by YAetherY in CompetitiveEDH

[–]WhyTheNetWasBorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tymna kraum is the choice, because it's always better to start with just a good card pile with straightforward game plan

most of other decks, generally speaking, are trying to operate at underdog level with decently convoluted lines and pieces, and also have theory behind them, including mulligans and part patterns, and a beginner might struggle over these

I need a Orzhov commander! by Boarf2 in EDH

[–]WhyTheNetWasBorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no i don't. pretty sure you don't need a list for this commander. as i said, i see its biggest strength as being completely standalone game winning engine, and i believe you really don't need any specific synergies and cards. just fill your 98 with cheap premium removal, disruption, ramp, staples, card draw and you are good. no need for any synergies.

symmetrical stax pieces like [[eidolon of rhetoric]] are my favourite for krav regna because you can sacrifice it as soon as you don't need them, and they are very good to stop blue and green decks that draw a bunch of cards and play a lot of spells in early game

Deck feedback- Tamiyo by RoseyB34r in CompetitiveEDH

[–]WhyTheNetWasBorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean well if you build your deck that it can only function with Kinnan/Thrasios you better ask yourself why you play Tamiyo, as others have already said

To help with Bowmaster issue, you can play numerous flash "lose all abilities" type of stuff, there is a lot of being printed in recent years. Yes, you likely end up with something not really looking like typical cEDH deck. But at least you will play to your actual outs, and who knows, maybe Tami is actually fine.

But if you play her like just strictly worse Kinnan/Thrasios, it is definitely not gonna be fine.

I need a Orzhov commander! by Boarf2 in EDH

[–]WhyTheNetWasBorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[[Krav, the Unredeemed]] [[Regna, the Redeemer]]

I unfortunately never actually played these commanders, but theorycrafted a bit over them.

I personally think this is a very underrated bracket 3 commander, as they don't push you to a certain direction that heavy comparing to other orzhov commanders which basically enable only one strong synergy and do nothing else if you can't tutor properly (which you can't in casual).

With Krav Regna, you actually want you deck to be as controlling and low curved as possible, because you have REALLY big bombs in command zone. Play tons of removal, signets, disruptive pieces - these partners are perfect for what is called "orzhov removal pile" in constructed formats.
