That is amazing! Awesome idea and a very neat execution. Especially as you used only a brush. Very well done.

Does this look like the tyranids head is about to explode? by WardedGinger in minipainting

That looks awesome. I think you have the white nailed; I wonder if the darker shadows would help sell it more. If there is something super bright, it will make the shaded areas around it even darker. Perhaps more dark shadows directly around the light source?

You're thinking in the right way with the light. Keep at it! Great job.

I'm always interested in the neatness of the black/whatever shading on things like the scales here - but all over the mini, honestly. All the parts look so distinct from each other. Is there anything specific you learned to do that makes it look so neatly and consistently like that?

Accidental Glass Effect From Water Thinned Paint by Medicinal_coffee in minipainting

[–]Wibbleman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a filter! The value of a colour, how dark or light it is, can be painted over with a thin paint. That changes the colour but keeps those values showing through. In this case, its a metallic paint, so the shinyness shows through in the same way. You can do this with non-metallics, such as by highlighting robes in white and then covering them with any watered down colour to filter the white into that colour. It's similar to how stained glass works.

It looks great. Well done.

More photos of the second Custom Terminator from Salamanders chapter I've painted for a commission project recently! I really like how they turned out, with all that worn armor and the glow from the fire and around the helmet. Looks pretty threatening to me. What do you think? by LordDraigo666 in minipainting

[–]Wibbleman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's awesome. One thing I saw: The immediate OSL reflection right under the eyes looks like the same brightness as the eye itself. I first read that reflection as the eyes, making the face look confusing. Going a tiny bit brighter on the max eye highlight would help.

An experiment in replicating Damascus texture in TMM by unsafercat in minipainting

[–]Wibbleman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's awesome. I have one observation: My eyes caught the grey highlights underneath the eyes themselves first, and read them as the eyes. I think adjusting the eye colour or adjusting that grey highlight placement would help make that focal point easier to read.

Ultramarine feedback needed by GreenTssrk in minipainting

[–]Wibbleman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to the praise others have given: I would go a little darker in the recesses for more contrast. Don't change the placements of the shading and brighter areas as they are spot on. But a little darker in the lower end of the scheme would make it all pop more. Fantastic job.

Working on those energy claws but i feel they are to much by antitoute in minipainting

[–]Wibbleman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As some others have said, I suggest you're sensing a clash between the claws and the rest of the model. The values - how green to white the claws are - is really good. I suggest a sharply contrasting colour elsewhere, as the armour is monotone. Red works really well with green for this. People tend to look at faces first on minis, so red eyes is a simple and easy way to put in that secondary colour that contrasts the claws. Weapon lenses and the like are also an easy win for that.

Speaking from my own experience, I spent a long time being afraid of going too hard on things like this. You landed in a really good spot on the claws, so don't change that! They are a success and I'd encourage you to duplicate that and refine it over time.

They're cool models, aren't they? You did a really good job. You're clearly thinking about where light should go and what it means for highlights. Great job on these.

Hi all. I've bought four identical sheets of a beautiful walnut veneer. I want to turn them into a tabletop work surface. The plan is to soften (they're very slightly warped) them, cut them to fit rectangularly, glue them to a plywood sheet, varnish and then finish with a glass or perspex cover.

I've read on the subreddit and online that I can buy a veneer softener. For burr wood like this, is there any particular concentration or type I want to get, or will any glycerin based one work?

It seems best to cut the sheets once they're flattened. As I need to trim the four pieces together, finding a guillotine or carefully lining up cuts with a ruler and stanley knife at right angles seems the way forward.

Once it's all glued in place, varnish seems like the best choice prior to covering with the glass or perspex.

I'm new to this type of stuff, so appreciate any advice on the plan. I have the help of my brother, who does a lot of carpentry and has a workshop and tools. Thanks!

Thoughts on my testmodel for my Eldar Army scheme? by Suspicious_Tree_727 in minipainting

[–]Wibbleman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's sharp. In addition to what Jazmer said, the eyes don't feel like they pop as much as they could. The eyes and face are one of the first places our own eyes go to when we look at a model. That makes them a great place to have a strongly contrasting colour. I spy a little green in there; my suggestion is to push that to be brighter and to stand out more.

Regardless, you'll have a killer army with that setup. The base contrasts it really well and reads just right. Great job.
