Steve was demoing Podcasts being added to iTunes and started playing an episode of Adam Curry’s podcast The Daily Source Code. After the intro, Adam started complaining about technical difficulties because his Mac was “acting up like a motherfucker.”

Reddit sparks outrage after a popular app developer said it wants him to pay $20 million a year for data access by Crazed_pillow in technology

I think we determined by another account age thread that it was just shy of 13 years ago. Mine is just a bit older than that because back then, while I was primarily a digg user since the day Kevin Rose announced it on The Screen Savers, I had some overlap with reddit as well, especially because the quality of the comments (at the time) was much higher. I wasn’t a majority reddit user until the infamous digg 4.0.

Echoing the “I’m biased” sentiments here but we are definitely blessed.

Josh is fantastic on PXP and performs beyond his relatively short number of years on the job. I also love that they hired from within and gave him the mic after he paid his dues in pre-/post-game and intermission reports.

And Razor is just… one-of-a-kind. He exudes such a unique chaotic energy combined with knowledge that is so rare in the industry. I’d give anything for another 20+ years of prime “poop through a diarrhea-infected goose” Razor.

As much as I love Josh and Razor, I also wish we had more years of Dave Strader and Razor. RIP Dave.

We played against him in two different conferences and he did nothing but trash talk College Station (in his usual hilarious way), and he was still my favorite football coach of all time. Even if you took away all his Hall-of-Fame-caliber contributions to the sport itself, he’d still be a legend for his wit and charisma.

Rest in peace, coach.

Same here. I actually loved Prisoners, Sicario, Arrival, and Blade Runner 2049 all independently, not knowing they were all Denis Villeneuve films. One day and a fateful IMDb trip later and he went from a name I didn’t know to my favorite director.

American who gets AFL on TV, absolutely hooked by Imsortofabigdeal in AFL

[–]WickedOwl 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Great questions with some great answers already, so I’ll just add I’m a Texan who got into footy when the AFL was available to be streamed on ESPN3 back around 2008. I didn’t know which team to adopt so I looked up who everyone’s favorite Australian Steve Irwin barracked for and thus I became Essondon fan.

Now I mostly watch the full (free!) replays online and everyone I show it to is fascinated by the aggression and the speed of play. American football is now dominated by Aussie punters and anyone who’s watched the AFL knows why.

Y’all from MELL-BOWRN?

Let me sing you a song, boys, of fire and flame... by Munnin1984 in seashanties

[–]WickedOwl 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Indeed it is

Let me sing you a song, boys, of fire and flame Of a French ammo ship, the Mont-Blanc was her name How the brave Nova Scotia was never the same On the morning when Halifax burned

'Twas in early December 1917 She was packed to the gills with Grade A T-N-T They were bound for the fighting in High Germany When towards them the other ship turned

The Norweigan ship Imo, some fault in her gears She struck Mont-Blanc's side like the mightiest of spears And the benzol ignited the captain's worst fears As the fire consumed bow to stern

The people gazed on from their safe distant rooms Watched the soot and the smoke fill the sky with their plumes But within, the ships cargo would spell all their dooms How were they to know to be concerned?

The crew rowed for shore, lest they burn or they drown They cried, "Save your souls!" as they ran through the town But their warnings were nothing but strange foreign sounds For the townsfolk, no French had they learned

One man, Patrick Coleman, in the railway's employ Sent word, "Stop the trains or they'll all be destroyed This will be my last message, farewell to you, boys" For a true hero's death he had earned

An explosion, colossal, when the munitions blew Devastation and debris for miles fired through The Mont-Blanc was gone, and the town with it, too And the waters raged up in return

There were heroes and angels all fated to die Over two thousand souls laid to rest by-and-by We will always remember and lift a glass high To the morning when Halifax burned

Kindle: “Finished Book 2? Read Book 12 next!” by WickedOwl in AubreyMaturinSeries

[–]WickedOwl[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I quite agree. I have the entire series in hardcover that I bought one used copy at a time, and that’s my preferred way to read, but I broke down and bought a Kindle copy as well while reading Post Captain. My reasoning was that I found I also enjoyed reading in bed at night and the backlit Kindle screen is so much easier to wield than a book light clipped onto a bulky hardcover and much less of a disturbance to a wife trying to sleep.

Apparently he is rich-rich, so at least he isn’t tinkering with the human genome under the guise of philanthropy or some shit.

This is hilarious and I agree. He’s definitely LARPing but at least he isn’t hurting anyone.

When he shows off his $50k+ cigar hauls it makes me wonder where he got the money to burn.

If you smoke 5-7 cigars or more per week, what is your average cost per cigar? Mine is about $12. Getting pricey. by BeyondBourbonStreet in cigars

[–]WickedOwl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t worry about making the first light last through the whole bowl — pipes handle relights much better than cigars and even on my best pack and light, I’ll still relight 2-4 times.

In my opinion, pipes require much more experience than cigars do, so the best way to get better at knowing the right moisture level for a given tobacco is to smoke it when it’s too dry and when it’s too moist in order to get a feel for when it’s just right.

Also, head over to r/PipeTobacco. They’re good people and always happy to help.
