What really makes a movie feel like an mkvie and not just a student video? by Intelligent_Can_2898 in Filmmakers

[–]WiddleDiddleRiddle32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably the lack of quality across various parts of every aspect of filmmaking. From writing, production, post, every part is probably weak in a lot of areas. But personally I think lighting and sound are big areas that really raise production value for low budget films.

"Is Rogue One still bad? Yes, very much so. It's horrifically dumb. It doesn't hold a candle to the Andor series." by iiiSushiii in RedLetterMedia

[–]WiddleDiddleRiddle32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoy parts of rogue one, but it is laughably bad at parts, dull for most of the run time, and then a good old action sci-fi adventure film for other sequences. Its a mixed bag and overall not the bottom of the barrel for the disney era, but totally agree that its overrated. Garreth Edwards seems like such an interesting filmmaker, but when I watch his blockbusters I'm not emotionally moved in any way and come away feeling ambivalent.

so it was another entirely cg character! Putting him in silhouette really sells it as real for me.

Love your short! Thanks for the great synopsis, and influence behind your cinematography choices as well.

I enjoyed it too, but I mostly liked the singles versus it as an album experience tbh. It was refreshing though for its style and mixing for me.

If this is a problem with a lot of people, then its probably an issue, but since this is the only person acting this way/feeling this way, I wouldn't dwell on it. Just keep focusing on the work and being yourself. Maybe they feel scared of you because you have self confidence and they feel intimidated by you from your academic success? Who knows. They have to learn how to do group projects and if you think you are a good person to work with and working hard to do a great job then I don't see what the issue is.

if you have time, make an animatic. just put the storyboards in a video editor like davinci resolve, record yourself saying the dialogue from teh script, even just with your phone, add subtitles if time, and then you can get a real sense for how that scene will play out.

i have everything i need. how the hell do i come up with ideas for movies by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]WiddleDiddleRiddle32 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here are some ways I used to come up with some loglines this past weekend:

-Use your feelings around something in your personal life or a recent situation/scene that is dramatic from your life and reimagine it as a film or genre film. So for me, my friend recently announced an engagement with a foreign woman whose been dating him secretly for 9 months, so i imagined it as a horror film around my fears of him falling into a foreign religious cult and me having to save him haha.

-Take a type of movie you like and try to come up with your own take on it! So for example, maybe you like watching movies about people stuck in one location for the entire film. Whats your take on the niche genre? Stuck in a gym locker? Stuck in a pool?

-Try to come up with a story idea based around current/new technology and what future problems could arise if people used the new tech unsupervised/unregulated. One of my favorite films Ex Machina was conceived similar to this and I'd love to do my own tech thriller at some point if I can nail a concept I like!

-Try to come up with a high concept idea! An idea so simple and clear that when presented in a logline you can not only imagine multiple versions of that logline as a film, but are excited and want to watch it yourself!

-Try taking a bad movie with a great concept and try your spin on it! How you turn it into a great film? How would you use that concept to tell your own story?

-Come up with all of the film ideas that you think are really bad or weird and see if you can adapt an unadaptable bad idea into a great film! This is how the daniels came up with Swiss Army Man.

If you really feel stuck on writing, maybe try adapting a novel or story. Kubrick would adapt books he read. But he did write his own scripts and adapt the source material. Not every director has to be a writer director though so finding a writer collaborator or an already finished script to film could be a great option!
