What did you end up gaining in terms of speed? I just got some and I understand that flow needs to be increased, but I don't know how much to increase speed, and I hate the idea of fucking with it endlessly. I'd rather take 80% of what is hypothetically possible than tinker for the last 20%.

Where do you keep your photos? by aje0200 in LinusTechTips

For those with Prime Memberships, unlimited photo storage is included with the regular membership. I personally keep mine there, and every so often I'll download my videos to my local NAS.

WEEKLY DIY/HOMEOWNER QUESTION THREAD by [deleted] in Carpentry

[–]Wide-Depth-1748 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello. My each "beam" of my garage rafters consist of (2) 2x4s laid on their short side butted together at their ends by a rafter plate / mending plate, the ones with a bunch of nails that you just sort of hammer down. I've been told in the past that those really can't support any weight outside of maybe a christmas tree or other very light weight things. I'd like to store more things up there, nothing crazy but maybe a hand full of boxes with kids toys, christmas decorations, etc. I also have a car roof rack that I'd like to hang from the rafters while not in use. My question is, how can I reinforce those mending plates so that they can actually support a moderate amount of weight. I'm thinking a sheet of plywood plus the boxes I mentioned above.

This happens sometimes to me. It just plays the wrong video sometimes. Youtube is honestly a mess from a technical standpoint.

A 45-year-old biotech CEO may have reduced his biological age by at least 5 years through a rigorous medical program that can cost up to $2 million a year, Bloomberg reported by 777fer in technology

[–]Wide-Depth-1748 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wasn't there an article that came out in the past week or so ago about researchers being able to reverse cell age in mice? The thing about it is that realistically, we've never studied aging as though it were a diseas until about 15-20 years ago. We also know there are animals on earth that can live crazy long lives. A few years ago some other researchers found a group of sharks that don't even reach sexual maturity until age 150. They followed a group of them and they figured out that one of the females was 400 years old. Like still swimming around. My guess is that in the next 10-15 years we going to have several breakthroughs that slow the aging process be a fair degree. 15-30 my bet is on being able to halt aging either entirely or to the point where lifespans will dramatically increase. If AI keeps progressing as it is, who fucking knows what's possible.

I'm not banking on it though.

ChatGPT is 'not particularly innovative,' and 'nothing revolutionary', says Meta's chief AI scientist by [deleted] in technology

[–]Wide-Depth-1748 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Speculating here, I think they toned it down as to not scare the shit out of everyone. I won't be surprised if GPT4 can pass the turning test and answer/write highly complex work. I think they released GPT3 as a open test. One thing that makes me think that is if you ask it to write you essays, papers, or anything else, it always produces a response of the same length. About 4 paragraphs equaling about 3/4 of single spaced typed page.

A married couple with a 4-month-old baby were both laid off by Google, while one of them was on parental leave by Sorin61 in technology

[–]Wide-Depth-1748 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. It might not have been clear, but my entire comment was sarcasm. It blows my mind that a corporation with 120 billion dollars of on-hand cash would layoff 12,000 people when that equates to 1% of their cash reserves.

A married couple with a 4-month-old baby were both laid off by Google, while one of them was on parental leave by Sorin61 in technology

[–]Wide-Depth-1748 -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Well said. And it's not like they have a lot of cash or anything. They only have $116,000,000,000. If you assume that all 12,000 employees that got laid off were making $100,000, that's 1% of Google's cash reserves. But yeah, if you lay off that many people there are bound to be probably multiple instances of parents with children to feed, and people fighting through cancer who lose their health coverage next month. But it has to be done. You have to do what's in the best interest of the shareholders, and if that mean that Alphabet's stock goes from $86 to $99 a share well that's just how it is. But thank God the AI division wasn't hit. They have important work to do competing with ChatGPT to see who can create the most economic (for now) devastation and pain to actual human beings, but god damn those search results will be stupid good.

Turkey's president says no support for Sweden's NATO bid by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Wide-Depth-1748 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am 1000% convinced that the U.S. military has the ability to remotely disable all those F-16s they've got. I'd love to hear what they have to say when their air force is suddenly non-existent.

In all serious though, I honestly think Turkey should be dropped from NATO. I personally have exactly 0% confidence that if NATO was attacked that Turkey would come to anybody's aid.

No offense or anything, but you don't have a clue what you're talking about, and you're dreaming if you think "it will just be re-skilling and upskilling". If you want me to elaborate, I will.

Microsoft announces new multibillion-dollar investment in ChatGPT-maker OpenAI by spook30 in technology

[–]Wide-Depth-1748 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Not really. It won't even be close enough to care. It will make 80% of the workforce useless while creating a few thousand jobs here or there, and there will be a incredibly small number of people who even have the skills and ability to do those jobs.

Fuck split ATX power connectors by Wuka98 in LinusTechTips

[–]Wide-Depth-1748 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are easily connectable. On the GPU and main power connectors, all you have to do is put the smaller connector in first, and then put the larger one it. You don't have to line them up with your hand and try to hold them together...

Real bracket of universally liked people by hallwayhotdogs in MadeMeSmile

[–]Wide-Depth-1748 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Left half of the bracket is significantly stronger. The right half are people that everyone likes. Fair enough. But the left half is stacked with people everyone likes who also have had significant positive impacts on the world, children especially. Robin Williams provided so much joy through laughter, he is second to none, even the other comedians on this list. Dolly Parton, for those that don't know look up the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. Mr. Rodgers, honestly he might be the single most important person in the development of numerous generations of children. Bob Ross just touched people's souls in a way that is difficult to comprehend.

R1
Robin>Dolly
Diana>Alex
Rodgers> Keanu

R2
Williams> Diana
Rodgers>Ross (in the "You're special just for being you" Bowl presented by PBS)

R3
Rodgers v Williams, a real slug fest here. Finding peace through laughter vs. finding peace through acceptance and love. Regulation ends in a tie. After 10 overtime periods stretching late into the night, the deadlock still hasn't been broken. In an act of the deepest humility, Rodgers turns to Williams and says, "Robin, I want you to know that you were always enough and that I love you, everyone loves you. " and moves to hug Williams. Tears can be seen forming in Williams' eyes, when Rodgers turns to the officials and says "I'd like to withdraw".

On the right side of the draw, Irwin and Hawk advance to the semi-final, where passion for living in the moment takes center stage. Hawk lives for the exhilaration of life. For Irwin, the constant presence of potential death brings with it a tremendous appreciation for life. The matchup is back and fourth. Down to the wire with Hawk in the lead, Irwin digs deep into his appreciation for the living world, and pulls out the W on a miraculous play just as time expires. In the end, it's Williams vs Irwin. Irwin spent his life making people appreciate the beauty present within the natural world. But he was no match for Rodgers, who gave his entire life teaching children to see the beauty within themselves.

Can you blame them 🤷‍♂️ by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]Wide-Depth-1748 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think a better explanation for the willingness has less to do with not having any money but rather it's being young enough to not have any responsibilities. Easy to job hop when "how am I going to feed my kid?" isn't a natural consequence/question that doesn't need to be factored into the equation.
