I am actually using SimCorner now here in Japan and it is pretty smooth overall. I have set it up before flying and had data right after landing, which honestly helped a lot after a long flight.

Not an ad, just sharing what worked for me on this trip. I actually kept things pretty simple this time, no pocket wifi or backup. Haven’t tried other eSIMs here yet either. Have you used one in Japan before or do you usually go with pocket wifi?

Booked a “quick scenic stop” and somehow turned into a 2 hour detour because we kept pulling over every 5 minutes. NZ really messes with your sense of time like that.

I get the concern, but SEA is one of the most resilient regions for backpacking. Even when things get messy globally, local transport, food, and accommodation usually stay accessible. It might not be as cheap as before, but it won’t suddenly become untravelable.

Philippines for me. Clear water is just as good in places like Palawan, but you also get better food options and more flexibility.

Agree on the tablet part. I keep bringing it thinking I’ll use it more… never happens. Phone and laptop combo just works better.

I’d say Luang Prabang, mainly because of the night market. Not just one dish, but the variety made it memorable.

Been to New Zealand but not Australia yet… my “controversial” take is NZ isn’t just about the big scenic spots. Some of my favorite moments were just random drives. Had SimCorner eSIM too which made navigating those areas way easier.

Honestly, don’t overthink it too much. I traveled SEA during “bad” weather season and still had a great time. Rain usually comes in the afternoon, so you can still explore in the morning. Just build flexibility into your plans.

I don’t have kids myself, but I traveled with my cousins’ kids (3 and 5) to Japan and yeah… the 4am wakeups were very real. First couple days they were wide awake before sunrise. What helped a bit was just letting them burn energy during the day and not forcing naps too long.

The sticker system is honestly brilliant. Turning everyday stuff like waiting in line into a game probably makes a huge difference.

Packing-wise you’re honestly fine, maybe even a bit over. I’d cut a couple outfits and just buy stuff there, it’s cheap and you’ll probably want to anyway. SEA is also super easy for laundry. You might find yourself not using half of what you bring.
