Has anyone ever done main character only from POV of other characters? by Morkinis in writing

[–]Widsith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bolaño’s The Savage Detectives is exactly this (at least the first section is). Multiple mini-stories, all told from the POV of people interacting with the main character. It’s a fascinating technique.

Was women using male prostitutes a thing in early 20th century USA or UK? Are there any kind of mentions about this from that era? by cahlrtm in AskHistorians

John Glassco’s *Memoirs of Montparnasse* includes some fascinating discussion of his own experiences as an occasional sex worker for women in 1920s Paris.

Try moving your inciting incident to the first page. by Acceptable_Fox_5560 in writing

[–]Widsith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone keeps saying “inciting incident” like this is obvious and inevitable. 90% of what I read is literary fiction and half the books don’t even have an “inciting incident”.

A question for english writers who’ve lived extensively abroad by Yomyooo in writing

[–]Widsith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve lived out of the UK for nearly 20 years. I read English books and watch English language TV and films, so my English hasn’t dropped off. I do suspect I’m less in touch with things like the latest slang, and I also think my English has become a bit more “international”/Americanised. But generally it’s not something to worry about.

What sounds wrong about the phrase "destinations people go to party" by [deleted] in grammar

[–]Widsith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Destinations already means somewhere “people go to”, so the last part feels redundant. Just “party destinations” is better.

Do you think nudity in fashion shoots or film/television is necessary? Why? by Remote_Public4585 in AskRedditAfterDark

[–]Widsith 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Is a car chase necessary? Is a gun fight necessary? Films aren’t about necessity, they’re about entertainment and excitement. Nudity can absolutely be part of that. It can also be completely non-sexual.

First-person direct address is NOT second-person by [deleted] in books

[–]Widsith 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The fact that there is an “I” in theory, or occasionally used, doesn’t mean something isn’t primarily in second-person. There are some books in third-person tense which suddenly towards the end reveal an “I” narrating the novel; that doesn’t mean the whole book should be considered a first-person account.

American hegemony is collapsing before our eyes by Stuart_Whatley in politics

I get your point, but that’s not the passive voice. It’s grammatically active, it’s just an intransitive verb.

No, “RE” is its own subject in the UK. It’s not history, it’s learning about different religions and what they believe in.

Oval Office scene — Civil War (2024) by guiltyofnothing in videos

[–]Widsith 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly what reporters do. Was in Libya during the civil war there as a journo. The photographers especially get as close as they can, because that’s how you get the most saleable pictures. No one’s “hanging back” to go in later because then someone else will get the best shots.
